7 options for the Eagles to replace Brandon Brooks after he suffered torn Achilles

7 guards the Eagles could have interest in adding to the roster after Brandon Brooks suffers torn Achilles

The Philadelphia Eagles have a glaring hole at right guard and one of the most athletic linemen in NFL history just happens to be unemployed.

The Eagles received devastating news on Monday when it was revealed that Brandon Brooks would miss the entire 2020 NFL season with a torn Achilles tendon.

The Eagles have viable replacements on the roster but if the team chooses to look outside the NovaCare Complex, here are seven options that make sense.

1. Jason Peters

The free-agent left tackle let it be known last season that he would play guard to extend his career and he’s still one of the most athletic players in the game regardless of position. Peters’s strength, technique, and versatility along with vast experience could allow such a move to make sense.

49ers OL roster battle already developing

The 49ers have a fun roster battle on their hands already.

The 49ers’ list of roster battles during the offseason program and training camp won’t be very long considering they’re returning close to all of their starters on both sides of the ball. One clear position battle is already taking shape along the offensive line.

When San Francisco released right guard Mike Person, it opened up a vacancy on the offensive line with no surefire contingency plan. There’ll be a bona fide battle among several players to win that job.

Perhaps the leading candidate for the starting right guard job, Daniel Brunskill, signed his exclusive rights free agent tender on Friday. The former offensive tackle for the San Diego Fleet of the Alliance of American Football found a home last year in Santa Clara when he filled in at tackle and guard during the regular season, and played some center during the preseason. Brunskill is an impressive athlete with good versatility that could wind up earning him his first NFL starting job.

It won’t be easy for Brunskill though. Ben Garland also re-signed in San Francisco on a one-year deal. He’s another versatile lineman who can play all three interior spots, and earned himself a look with his play at center down the stretch last season filling in for Weston Richburg. There’s a chance the team strictly wants Garland to play center, but if he’s their best option at right guard, they wouldn’t hesitate to start him there and figure out a contingency plan for a Richburg injury later.

The 49ers added another candidate for the right guard job shortly after it was reported Person was gone. Tom Compton, a journeyman offensive lineman who’s been with five teams in his career and spent the last four years with four different teams, will also get a shot at the starting right guard job.

It’s also not out of the question that San Francisco uses a relatively early pick on an interior lineman that pushes all the veterans out of the running. This would probably be the ideal scenario. They’d be snagging a young talent for the offensive line, while allowing players like Brunskill, Garland and Compton to serve as high quality depth pieces.

Either way, having so many capable player up front is part of why the 49ers were able to win 13 games despite four of their five offensive line spots missing multiple games last season. If they can improve that depth after losing a starter in the offseason, the 49ers’ offense will be in great shape to have another good year up front.

Report: 49ers to release OL Mike Person

The 49ers let go of starting right guard Mike Person.

The 49ers on Thursday informed offensive lineman Mike Person that he will be released according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Person, 31, signed with the 49ers prior to the 2018 season and started all 30 games he played, including all 16 in 2018. A neck injury forced him out of two games down the stretch in 2019.

The veteran interior lineman had a $2.5 million cap hit, but the 49ers will incur no dead cap for releasing him after signing him to a three-year deal last offseason.

San Francisco now has a vacancy in their starting offensive line. Internal candidates to fill it are Ben Garland, who signed a one-year deal to return to San Francisco on Wednesday, and Daniel Brunskill who filled in while Person was out last season. The 49ers could also wind up drafting an interior lineman with either of their two first-round picks.

Former Colts get a chance at a Super Bowl ring

These former Colts get a chance at a ring.

When the San Francisco 49ers and Kansas City Chiefs face off in Super Bowl LIV on Sunday in Miami, there will be a few former Indianapolis Colts vying for a ring.

There aren’t a whole lot of former Colts on both sidelines, but there are a few players that used to wear the horseshoe—regardless of whether it was for a full season or just a short amount of time.

49ers

OL Mike Person: Now a starting guard for the 49ers and their incredible rushing attack, Person had two separate stints with the Colts. He spent nine days with the team in 2012 after he was claimed off of waivers. He also spent 12 games while making four starts with the Colts during the 2017 season.

S Jacob Thieneman: Though he won’t be playing in the game, Thieneman spent five days with the Colts during August.

Chiefs

OT Jackson Barton: A seventh-round pick with the Colts in 2019, Barton spent most of his time on the practice squad until the Chiefs signed him to the active roster in November.

RB Spencer Ware: Ware was with the team for the majority of the spring and offseason. He worked until he was released by the Colts in September just a few weeks after the regular season started. He’s currently on the injured reserve list.

The secret superstars of Super Bowl LIV

Every Super Bowl has the potential for unheralded players to shine. Here are six such players who could make an impact in Super Bowl LIV.

MIAMI — One thing you learn when you cover enough Super Bowls is that no matter how unheralded a player may be coming into the week, there’s always a story to tell, and somebody who would like to hear it. But that’s for the 6,000 or so media members credentialed for the event.

When it comes to game time this Sunday, and Super Bowl LIV kicks off, there are players on both teams — the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers — who may not be known to the general public, but who are ready to make serious contributions to their teams efforts. So, let’s go under the hood of these two rosters and reveal three players for each team whose performances this season should not go unnoticed any longer.

Here are the secret superstars of Super Bowl LIV, with thoughts on all six players from teammates and opponents.

49ers: Deebo Samuel | Fred Warner | Mike Person

No news is good news: 49ers practice report remains unchanged

No news was good news Wednesday for the 49ers in their quest for health ahead of the divisional playoffs.

The 49ers on Tuesday had every member of their 53-man roster practicing for the first time all season. They maintained that course Wednesday, which is a positive sign for a team that’s dealt with major injuries to key players all season.

It looks like Dee Ford and Kwon Alexander are both on track to play, although Alexander remains on Injured Reserve and isn’t officially listed on the participation report. Setbacks of any kind would significantly derail their chances to get back for the divisional playoffs, so the fact they remained limited participants Wednesday is a positive sign.

Right guard Mike Person has missed the last two contests with a neck injury. He’s still limited, but could be in a position to play after getting last week off.

A full injury report for Saturday will come out Thursday, at which point we’ll get a better idea of each player’s status.

Here’s Wednesday’s participation report:

DL Kentavius Street (knee)

Jaquiski Tartt officially ‘doubtful’ vs. Seahawks

The 49ers likely won’t have their starting strong safety for the fourth-consecutive game.

The 49ers’ official injury report for Sunday came with a couple hits of bad news. Jaquiski Tartt was a limited participant in practice all week, but is officially listed as ‘doubtful’ for Sunday, and defensive lineman Jullian Taylor was ruled out with a knee injury after getting on track to return Sunday after missing three games.

It turns out Taylor is headed to Injured Reserve with a torn ACL, so his season is over. He’ll be replaced by undrafted rookie Kevin Givens.

Tartt has missed the last three games with a broken rib, and now it appears he’ll miss a fourth. The team isn’t ruling him all the way out in the event of a turnaround between Friday afternoon and Sunday evening when inactives are due.

San Francisco has struggled in Tartt’s absence. They’re allowing 35.3 points and 291 passing yards per game in those three contests. His replacement, Marcell Harris, has had some up-and-down performances, and will need to have his best game as a pro against Seattle.

The injuries to Tartt, plus Dee Ford getting ruled out again with a hamstring injury, further underscores the need for San Francisco to get a win over Seattle and clinch a bye in the first round of the playoffs.

Right guard Mike Person is also questionable with a neck injury. He missed last week vs. the Rams and will be replaced again by undrafted rookie Daniel Brunskill if he’s unable to play Sunday.

Here’s the official status report for Week 17:

Richard Sherman, K’Waun Williams not on 49ers’ injury report vs. Rams

The 49ers’ injury situation is improving. Richard Sherman and K’Waun Williams will play vs. the Rams.

The 49ers will be at least marginally healthier Saturday when they face the Los Angeles Rams at Levi’s Stadium. Both cornerbacks Richard Sherman and K’Waun Williams were not on the team’s final Week 16 injury report, putting them on track to play after they missed Week 15 against the Falcons.

Williams’ return from a concussion is less surprising than Sherman’s quick turnaround from a Grade 2 hamstring strain. Typically players clear concussion protocol within a week, and Williams practiced in full all week.

Sherman, however, was supposed to be out at least two weeks. His return to practice Monday was an indicator he might play Saturday, but he practiced in full all week and was left off the injury report.

Having both Sherman and Williams back in the secondary should help with some of the communication issues that plagued the 49ers’ defense against Atlanta.

Defensive coordinator Robert Saleh on Wednesday specifically noted a miscommunication in the secondary leading to the Falcons’ game-winning touchdown pass from Matt Ryan to Julio Jones.

While missing other starters will impact the 49ers, getting Williams and Sherman back should give the San Francisco defense enough of a boost to improve on last week’s performance.

The other player of note on the injury report is right guard Mike Person. He injured his neck against Atlanta and was a limited participant in practice all week. Daniel Brunskill, who filled in at right tackle while Mike McGlinchey was out, and at left tackle when Justin Skule struggled at left tackle, would be first in line to slide into the starting right guard spot.

Against a player like Rams defensive tackle Aaron Donald, the interior of the offensive line is imperative. Brunskill getting his first ever start at right guard against Donald would be a massive test that could decide Sunday’s contest.

Here’s the full injury report:
