Two Lions execs represented in the NFL’s front office diversity program

Lions execs Ray Agnew and Mike Martin are represented in the NFL’s front office diversity program this week in Dallas

The NFL announced the roster of talent that will participate in the annual front office accelerator program for minority candidates. Two Detroit Lions staffers are among the rising and aspiring execs gathering in greater Dallas this week for the program.

Lions Assistant GM Ray Agnew and Director of Scouting Advancement Mike Martin are hoping to parlay participation in the program into higher-level jobs. For Agnew, that means becoming a general manager.

Agnew has already been receiving buzz as a potential GM candidate for the upcoming offseason. He came to Detroit from the Los Angeles Rams with Lions GM Brad Holmes.

Martin is also in his fourth season with the Lions. He was a well-respected scout for several teams, notably the Houston Texans, before joining the Lions. His role with the Lions is coordinating the pro and college scouting departments and staffs, a good precursory role for becoming a GM as well. That’s what Holmes did with the Rams before being hired in 2021 by the Lions.

Looking back at Mike Martin’s coaching career

A look back at the coaching career of legendary Florida State baseball head coach Mike Martin.

No. 1 overall seed Tennessee (55-12, 22-8 SEC) will play No. 8 seed Florida State (47-15, 17-12 ACC) in the first-round of the 2024 College World Series on Friday.

First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. EDT at Charles Schwab Field Omaha in Omaha, Nebraska. ESPN will televise the matchup between the Vols and Seminoles.

Tennessee will be making its third College World Series appearance in four years, while Florida State is returning to Omaha for the first time since 2019, its final season under head coach Mike Martin.

Martin, who died on Feb. 1, coached the Seminoles from 1979-2019, leading Florida State to 40 NCAA Tournament appearances and 17 appearances in the College World Series, but the Seminoles never won a College World Series championship.

Martin compiled a head coaching record of 2,029-736-4. He guided Florida State to 11 Metro Conference Tournament championships, and four tournament titles. He also won nine ACC regular-season titles and eight tournament championships.

Martin was a 13-time conference coach of the year and he was named national Coach of the Year in 2012 and 2019. He guided the Seminoles to two runner-up finishes in the College World Series (1986, 1999).

Opinion: Arkansas baseball season a disappointment but not a failure

Dave Van Horn’s Razorbacks had a terrific 2023 campaign that was marred by a disappointing finish. But a failure? Not in this writer’s opinion.

Being outscored 50-15 in three games versus Texas Christian University this season certainly leaves a bad taste in the mouth regarding the Arkansas baseball team.

Dave Van Horn has created such a high standard for the program that anything short of a Omaha appearance is viewed as a failure by the majority of fans.

Six of the 16 teams left in the tournament are SEC teams. Arkansas shared the SEC title with Florida, who had to go to the distance to win the Gainesville regional.

That accomplishment cannot be derided. It is only the third time in Van Horn’s 21 seasons that he has won the conference overall.

Winning the Western Division is just as impressive. Seeing as the last two national champions are from it, and that Alabama is the only team from the division that hasn’t been in the College World Series in the last decade from it.

At the end of the day though, fans want to be hoisting the national championship trophy on the last week of June at Charles Schwab Field.

Until the Razorbacks finally break through and do that, the misplayed pop-up in 2018 will haunt Van Horn and his program.

People like to compare Van Horn to legendary Florida State skipper Mike Martin, as Martin has won more games than any other coach in NCAA baseball history and went to Omaha 17 times but never won the whole thing.

While there isn’t anything inherently wrong with that comparison, I’d argue that Van Horn is more like Dean Smith, despite it being a different sport.

Smith took over the North Carolina men’s basketball job in 1961 and was ultra successful after a rough first five seasons.

He went to the Final Four six times (1967, 1968, 1969, 1972, 1977 and 1981) and was the national runner-up twice in ’68 and ’81.

Finally the Tar Heels broke through in 1982 with James Worthy and Sam Perkins and a guy named Michael Jordan and clipped Georgetown and Patrick Ewing in the closing seconds in the Superdome.

1981-82 was year 21 for Smith, which is what Van Horn just finished.

Van Horn has gone to Omaha 7 times as the Hog skipper, and has the 2018 runner-up finish while finishing third twice.

As well as he and his staff recruit, eventually they are going to secure that final out in the final game and bring a championship back to Fayetteville, surely.

Lions let go of 3 members of the scouting staff

It’s the time of year when scouting staffs get turned over

The week after every NFL draft is often one of change for scouting staffs around the league. That’s especially true for teams that undergo front office and coaching overhauls like the Detroit Lions did this offseason.

So it’s not surprising that the Lions parted ways with three members of the scouting staff. Collegiate scouting director Ron Miles and scouts Chuck Brensinger and Jay Muraco are no longer with the team. Muraco was Detroit’s collegiate scout in the northeast region, while Brensigner worked on the pro scouting side.

No immediate replacements have been hired. The Lions have been linked to former Panthers area scout Mike Martin, but nothing formal has happened on that front just yet. Lions GM Brad Holmes served as the Rams’ director of collegiate scouting for several years before coming to Detroit, so he should have a good idea of what the wants in the position.
