SEC Network’s Peter Burns: ‘Better for Notre Dame’ to lose game

Bad take.

Once Notre Dame suffered a 24-13 loss to Cincinnati, everyone knew its College Football Playoff chances had gone down to virtually zero. As is custom for people who don’t care for the Irish, their emotions ranged from nothing short of gleeful to relieved that a “real” team now can make the playoff. One person who took to Twitter to express his thoughts on the matter was Peter Burns, a studio anchor for the SEC Network. It took him until Sunday morning to do so, but he held nothing back:

Mike Golic Jr. wasted little time responding to Burns, as did his father:

I’m not going to pretend that the Irish have risen to the occasion when they’ve made the playoff or even looked pretty in those games. However, why can’t we have our cake and eat it, too? Isn’t being considered one of only four teams good enough to play for college football’s top prize an honor in its own right? It should be, especially for teams not in the SEC.

Every fan wants their team to win a national championship, but they know it isn’t destined to happen every year. Three of the four teams who make the playoff won’t have that ultimate goal realized. Still, look at all of the teams that don’t make the cut. I’d even say that it’s insulting to list the teams that immediately missed the cut.

Is Burns really saying that a program like Notre Dame would be better off playing in a bowl game nobody watches or at least has no real stakes involved? Sure, the Irish would be happy to be invited to a New Year’s Six Bowl, but shouldn’t they make the playoff if they had a strong regular season with one or zero losses? Pick another hill to die on, Peter.

We’re just days away from the 2021 NFL Draft and with the festivities returning to some sense of normalcy, 32 franchise legends or current players will resume the tradition of announcing the second and third-round picks.

For the Eagles that former player will be Mike Golic Sr., per a release from the NFL.

Golic was drafted by the Houston Oilers selected in the 10th round with the 255th overall pick in the 1985 NFL Draft. An eight-year NFL veteran, Golic played defensive tackle for the Houston Oilers, Philadelphia Eagles, and Miami Dolphins.

The former Notre Dame star played in 115 games (starting 49 games) and 5 playoff games during his 8 seasons in the NFL, recording 11.5 sacks and three interceptions in his career.

Who would make up a Notre Dame team on ‘College Bowl’?

Would you like to see these former athletes represent Notre Dame in a different type of contest?

Those of you of a certain age might remember “College Bowl”, a program that featured teams of college students testing their knowledge. Well, NBC is bringing it back in June with Peyton Manning as host and Cooper Manning as his assistant. Presently, Notre Dame is not listed among the schools that will participate. But wouldn’t that be cool if it did?

In fact, what if their was a “College Bowl” version in which the schools were represented by famous athletes that went there? Notre Dame certainly would have its pick of the litter with all of the big names associated with it. With only three spots available, that makes the selection process even tougher. However, we think we’ve picked a team that would be perfect to represent the Irish, one that was put together by virtue of name recognition, if not qualification to be quizzed on their knowledge of the world we live in.

Mike Golic dug face-first into a cake from the Fiesta Bowl during his final ESPN broadcast

“Ohh, look at that! I got a cake!” Golic said.

Saturday’s PlayStation Fiesta Bowl game between Oregon and Iowa State was legendary broadcaster Mike Golic’s final assignment for ESPN, as his contract expires after more than two decades with the network.

Although fans of Golic’s run on ESPN Radio and his college football broadcasts are devastated by his departure — he was unsurprisingly fantastic this season in his return to college football  — the bowl game made sure he celebrated the end of his time with ESPN properly. And with a thank-you cake.

During the second half of the Oregon-Iowa State game, the Fiesta Bowl mascot, Spirit, delivered Golic the cake on live TV, and he was elated.

“Ohh, look at that! I got a cake!” Golic said. “‘The Fiesta Bowl thanks you.’ Thank you, Spirit!”

And then he dug right into it face first.

(We should also note that although the cake appears to be funky green color, it actually just looks like the frosting is picking up the green screen graphic behind Golic.)

“Whoa, don’t drop it,” Dave Pasch teased as Golic did, in fact, almost drop it.

“Oh, this is terrific,” Golic added.

Terrific is one of several adjectives college football fans would probably use to describe Golic’s work on air this season. He’s been entertaining, shrewd and delightful — including the time earlier this season when he devoured doughnuts during a game.

He’s definitely going to be missed by fans everywhere — or at least until he returns to sports media at some point.

Mike Golic is preparing for his final ESPN assignment before contract expires

The end of an era for the broadcast legend.

Jan. 2 will be the final assignment the legendary Mike Golic will have for ESPN before his contract expires.

Golic’s run on ESPN Radio of over two decades ended in July on the final Wingo and Golic, and since then, he’s worked some college football broadcasts, and that included some doughnut eating that fans loved.

Golic was on the mic for the Alamo Bowl on Tuesday night, and as he said on Twitter, the Fiesta Bowl on Saturday will be his last ESPN call before his contract is finished.

Over a week ago, he tweeted about what was his final visit to ESPN’s campus:

As he said, he’s not done working yet, something Golic has said previously. But it seems like all signs point to this weekend as the end of an incredible career at ESPN:

We’ll hopefully find out soon what’s next for him in 2021.

Fans loved seeing Mike Golic eat a doughnut during a college football broadcast

Mike Golic loves his doughnuts.

Mike Golic loves his doughnuts. Years ago, he inhaled 36 doughnuts in 10 minutes, and his former radio partner, Trey Wingo, once described Golic as someone who lives to eat doughnuts before Golic ate half a doughnut out of the garbage.

So it should come as no surprise that when Golic returned to ESPN’s college football broadcasts — he had his last ESPN Radio show earlier this summer after more than two decades on the air — the camera captured him eating a doughnut.

Saturday for Week 2 of college football, Golic was part of the broadcast team for Louisiana’s stunning upset over No. 23 Iowa State, and many fans praised his commentary on Twitter. But they also definitely took note of his doughnut intake (including his wife, Christine), and they loved that too.

Mike Golic says he’s not retiring even after ESPN contract ends

He’s not done just because he’s off ESPN Radio.

The new ESPN Radio lineup has officially kicked off on Monday, with Keyshawn, Jay and Zubin starting their new morning show that replaced Golic & Wingo.

Even though Mike Golic could sleep in on Monday, he spent the morning tweeting as various people reached out, many of whom saying they missed hearing his voice after over two decades in the national timeslot.

And he’s telling the world that even when his ESPN contract is up at the end of the year, retirement isn’t happening.

First, he classily wished Keyshawn Johnson, Jay Williams and Zubin Mehenti luck on their first morning on the air:

Then, there was this reply when asked what was next for him (which we knew already was doing college football for ESPN):

And some other replies, including why he’s up so early:

Mike Golic says he never overslept in 25 years of waking up early for morning radio shows

Amazing!!

Mike Golic’s run on ESPN Radio — and on morning shows in general — was incredible.

But what might be just as impressive is the fact we learned from his appearance on the podcast of his ESPN colleague Adam Schefter: he informed the NFL reporter that in 25 years of waking up that early, whether it was at 4:15 or 4:30 AM, he NEVER overslept and missed the start of a show. He set one alarm! Luckily, on weekends, he was able to go back to sleep after he’d stir around that super-early time.

What’s more is now that he doesn’t have to wake up that early anymore, he got rid of his alarm clock (or he might mean the alarm set on his phone).

Golic also tweeted this on his first Monday after his final show:

There’s a lot to get used to after over two decades doing the same thing.

Farewell to Golic & Wingo on ESPN Radio, Mike Golic’s morning show

After 22 years the voice of ESPN morning radio hangs it up to return to the collegiate game.

Former Notre Dame standout defensive tackle Mike Golic has had plenty of success on and off the field. Golic was a captain in his senior season with the Irish before being drafted in the 10th round by the Houston Oilers and playing in the NFL for 8 seasons. His post playing career has been even more impressive, as he began it prior to even finishing his NFL career.

During his time with the Philadelphia Eagles, Golic would do a weekly segment on the Randall Cunningham Show which began a long, successful media career. I did take him a few years to blossom but once he did, along with Mike Greenberg, Golic became the face of ESPN radio. The show began just on ESPN radio affiliates then moves to a simulcast on ESPN2. When Greenberg left, Golic had about two weeks off before getting back on the mic with Trey Wingo as their show’s run of three years came to an end today. That’s over 22 years of morning radio for the former Notre Dame star.

What’s in store next for Golic isn’t retirement, he will be behind the mic for ESPN during the college football season. That means we will get plenty more of Golic in our ears for the foreseeable future and that doesn’t seem to bother us one bit.
