How have you stayed connected to the …

How have you stayed connected to the Warriors during the lockdown over the coronavirus? Mike Brown: I have been speaking to [head coach] Steve Kerr. I’ve been speaking to him a long time and he’s the best. We have a huge group chat via text where we communicate basically on a daily basis. Steve’s biggest thing is he wants everybody to make sure they take care of themselves, stay safe, stay healthy, take care of the family and try the best you can to enjoy this downtime knowing as coaches, especially, this can break at any time. Be ready.

In the months leading up to the 2014 …

In the months leading up to the 2014 draft, no NBA franchise scouted the basketball team at the University of Kansas more vigorously than the Cleveland Cavaliers. The Cavs were coming off a tumultuous season, their fourth straight missing the playoffs, and still reeling from LeBron James’ decision four years earlier to bolt for Miami. Cavs owner Dan Gilbert responded by firing his general manager (Chris Grant) and his head coach (Mike Brown). He then handed the keys to an NBA lifer named David Griffin. Griffin had broken into the NBA 21 years earlier as an intern with the Phoenix Suns. By 2007 he was senior vice president of basketball operations in Phoenix. In 2010 he left for a similar job with the Cavaliers, and now he was running the show. With the Cavaliers miraculously winning the draft lottery, despite entering the evening with just a 1.7 percent chance of landing the No. 1 pick, he’d have his choice among three players grouped together at the top of most draft boards: Duke forward Jabari Parker and Kansas teammates Andrew Wiggins and Joel Embiid.

Warriors’ Mike Brown to coach Nigerian Olympics men’s basketball team

Golden State Warriors assitant coach Mike Brown will be the coach of the Nigeria men’s basketball team at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Golden State Warriors assistant coach Mike Brown will be the coach of the Nigeria men’s basketball Olympic team, according to Marc J. Spears of the Undefeated.

Brown will lead the D’Tigers to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics this summer.

Nigeria men’s basketball qualified for the Olympics for the first time in 2012. The team hasn’t missed the cut since and is set to participate for the third time in a row.

In London 2012, the D’Tigers finished 10th. In Rio 2016, they came in 11th.

Brown has worked with seven different NBA teams since 1997 in either an assistant or head coach capacity, serving on staffs for 19 of those 23 seasons.

He was the head coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers from 2005-10 and the 2013-14 season, and was the head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers from 2011-2013. Brown’s head coaching record is 347-216 (.616).

Brown also has Team USA experience. He was an assistant coach for the U.S. Pan American Men’s Basketball Team in 2015.

“I’m honored and humbled that Musa Kida and the Nigerian Basketball Federation have given me this opportunity,” Brown said to the Undefeated.

“The Nigerian Basketball Federation has been very professional and organized throughout the vetting process. They want to continue to build a world-class team and organization on and off the court. I’m excited to have learned that the Federation’s vision is to provide the team with the necessary resources to compete at the highest level. Their commitment will enable the players and coaches to focus our energy on competing at the highest possible level every time we step on the basketball court. We want to make all of Nigeria proud.”

Nigeria’s 2019 World Cup team included four players either on NBA teams or in G League associates: Al-Farouq Aminu, Chimezie Metu, Josh Okogie and Gabe Vincent, according to the Undefeated.

It also rostered former NBA players Diogu, Ekpe Udoh and Ben Uzoh.

Brown plans to hire a full coaching …

Brown plans to hire a full coaching staff, including player development personnel, video personnel, scouts, and medical personnel for the Nigerian national team. The Warriors have given Brown their blessing and will allow Nigeria to use its newly renovated East Bay practice facility in preparation for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Brown could also potentially add one NBA player to the roster that would be granted a Nigerian passport.

But what has Kerr learned? If he says …

But what has Kerr learned? If he says this experience has helped him become better at his job, where exactly has he grown? “Details,” Kerr said. “Fundamental details. I’m seeing deficiencies where, with our last team, they just automatically made up for a mistake by making four straight 3s and blowing a game open. I’m now forced to figure out what the deficiency is and how to solve it. So I’m relying more on Mike Brown and Ron Adams for that. Both guys are more detailed than I am as a coach.”

Roger Goodell, Mike Brown comment on Patriots taping investigation

The commissioner and Bengals owner commented on the latest incident with the Patriots.

With league meetings Wednesday, the subject of the New England Patriots taping the Cincinnati Bengals sideline was bound to come up with some big names.

One of those, commissioner Roger Goodell, took a bevy of questions on the topic and largely revealed the NFL’s investigation doesn’t have a set timeframe, nor does it sound like a decision will come down soon.

Here’s one portion of the statement from NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport: “It’s under review. We’re going to be thorough and take our time.”

Events in the Patriots’ history like Spygate are something the NFL admits will play a role:

Notably, reporters also managed to get a comment out of the usually-elusive midseason Mike Brown:

There isn’t much there, which was much the same for Bengals coach Zac Taylor as he tries to get his guys ready to face the Patriots over the weekend.

Written another way, don’t expect a ruling from the NFL’s investigation before the game and expect less from a Bengals team just trying to win its second game of the season.

Under-the-radar candidates to replace David Fizdale as coach of Knicks

The New York Knicks have parted ways with head coach David Fizdale, leaving an opportunity for someone else to try fixing the franchise.

The New York Knicks have parted ways with head coach David Fizdale, leaving an opportunity for someone else to try fixing the franchise.

You have probably heard the big-name candidates like Mark JacksonJeff Van Gundy and Kenny Smith, especially since they all have big profiles now as regulars on television and have ties to either New York or the Knicks.

There are also the familiar faces who may get consideration and you’ve probably seen them other lists – coaches like Tom Thibodeau, Ty Lue, Jason Kidd, Mike Brown and Mark Woodson.

Other obvious names to consider are assistants Mike Miller (not the one who played in the NBA) and Pat Sullivan, both of whom are current assistants. Miller has been named the interim head coach, so it’s possible that he could take over permanently if he does a great job. New York also has two other assistants (Kaleb Canales and Jud Buechler) who will be asked to step up with Fizdale and former assistant coach Keith Smart gone.

Perhaps no one makes more sense than former NBA All-Star Chauncey Billups, who played for the Knicks in 2011 and has connections to the team’s front office (since he played under current GM Scott Perry in Detroit). However, he has maintained that he is more interested in becoming a front-office executive than coaching.

Regardless, this is a tough job and someone who has ties to their front office in some ways may have an advantage since this is such a crucial hire. Here are some under-the-radar candidates to keep an eye on as the Knicks conduct their coaching search.

Craig Robinson

Back in April 2018, Frank Isola actually mentioned Knicks executive Craig Robinson as a potential candidate for their head coaching vacancy before they eventually hired Fizdale (via New York Daily News):

“Robinson is another longshot Knicks candidate, according to a team source. The former Oregon State head coach — and brother of former First Lady Michelle Obama — currently serves as the Knicks’ VP of player and organization development.”

Robinson was the head coach at Oregon State from 2008 until 2014. During his playing days at Princeton, he was teammates with Steve Mills — the President of Basketball Operations for the New York Knicks. It is also worth mentioning that former NBA champion coach Dave Blatt was one of their teammates as well, though he is currently dealing with serious health issues.

Becky Hammon

Becky Hammon was once a fixture at Madison Square Garden, as she played for the New York Liberty from 1999 until 2006. The San Antonio Spurs assistant was once again promoted within the Spurs organization last year and has been a fixture on the sidelines during Summer League games for the team as well. She has received some consideration for other head coaching jobs recently, such as the Milwaukee Bucks’ and Detroit Pistons’ gigs. One of the looming questions for her is how long Gregg Popovich will remain head coach in San Antonio. If he decides to retire soon, she could be in line to take over as the next head coach of the Spurs.

Adrian Griffin

While he is currently the lead assistant coach for the defending champion Toronto Raptors, Adrian Griffin could make some sense for the New York Knicks. He attended college in New Jersey at Seton Hall University, where he is in their athletics Hall of Fame. During his final NBA campaign in 2007-08, he played 13 games for the Seattle Supersonics. Scott Perry was the Assistant General Manager for Seattle that season. Then, when Perry was the Vice President of Basketball Operations for the Orlando Magic in 2015-16, Griffin was one of the team’s assistant coaches.

Darvin Ham

Former NBA champion Darvin Ham played for the Detroit Pistons from 2003 through 2005. During that time, Perry served as the Director of Player Personnel for the organization, so he’s familiar with Ham. Ham has previously been in consideration for head coaching positions with the Minnesota Timberwolves and Cleveland Cavaliers. We also previously mentioned him as a potential candidate for the head coaching vacancy with the Atlanta Hawks in 2018 before the team went in a different direction.

Chad Forcier

Milwaukee Bucks assistant Chad Forcier was an assistant coach for the Detroit Pistons (2001-03) when Perry was the team’s Director of Player Personnel. He later served as an assistant for the Orlando Magic, including the final year Perry was their assistant general manager (2016-17). He worked directly with Gregg Popovich when he was an assistant with the San Antonio Spurs and has served as a lead assistant coach for the Memphis Grizzlies. His ties to Perry and coaching experience could make him an interesting candidate to watch.
