Report: Kings hiring Warriors assistant Mike Brown as next head coach

The Sacramento Kings have reportedly agreed on a four-year deal to make Warriors assistant coach Mike Brown their next head coach.

After the Golden State Warriors’ playoff run ends, Steve Kerr will need to make some changes to his coaching staff. Kerr and the Warriors will reportedly be losing longtime assistant Mike Brown to a Northern California rival.

According to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN, the Sacramento Kings have agreed with Brown on a four-year contract to become the next head coach of the franchise.

Via @wojespn on Twitter:

Brown has been alongside Kerr on the bench with the Warriors since 2016. The assistant has helped coach the Warriors to two titles during his time as an assistant. In the 2017 postseason, Brown filled in as head coach when Kerr was unable to coach on the sideline due to a back injury. Brown led the Warriors to a 12-0 record in the playoffs before beating LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers in the NBA Finals.

Prior to serving as an assistant coach with the Warriors, Brown was the head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers and Cleveland Cavaliers. In eight seasons as a head coach, Brown notched a 347-216 (.616%) record. In 2009, Brown earned the NBA’s Coach of the Year award after finishing 66-16 with the Cavaliers.

Brown also currently serves as head coach of the Nigerian international men’s basketball team.

Brown will now join former Golden State assistants like Luke Walton, Keith Smart, Mike Malone and others to become the head coach of the Sacramento Kings.

Before Brown joins the Kings, the Warriors still have business to handle in the postseason. With a 2-1 lead in the second-round postseason series, the Warriors are slated to meet the Memphis Grizzlies for Game 4 on Monday evening at San Francisco’s Chase Center.

Mike Brown brings a defensive presence to Sacramento and has won nearly 62% of his games as a head coach.
Sure, a team’s defense is only as good as the personnel on the roster, but it has to start at the top.

Mark Jackson was indeed a Klutch client in the past and, sources say, maintains a strong relationship with Klutch CEO Rich Paul, whose foremost client, of course, is the Lakers’ LeBron James. There is undeniably a level of support within the Klutch camp for Jackson’s candidacy with the Lakers, but Jackson’s chances of finally getting another NBA coaching shot after an eight-year wait are much stronger with Sacramento. -via marcstein.substack.com / May 7, 2022
The Kings were awaiting the arrival of Golden State Warriors assistant Mike Brown on Thursday as they entered what could be the final hours of their coaching search. One question that has lingered in league circles is whether Brown would be willing to leave a good situation with Golden State to take on a reclamation project in Sacramento, where the Kings are trying to end an NBA-record 16-year playoff drought. NBA agent Warren LeGarie, Brown’s representative at WGL Management, addressed that question in an exclusive interview with The Sacramento Bee, saying Brown is prepared to accept the job if the Kings offer it to him. -via Sacramento Bee / May 5, 2022

Former Orlando and Charlotte head coach Steve Clifford has interviewed and so has former Golden State coach and ESPN analyst Mark Jackson. Sources say, Mike Brown, the Golden State associate head coach whose team is tied, 1-1, in its West semifinal series with Memphis, spent informal time with Kings officials on Wednesday and has his formal interview on Thursday. As Bleacher Report’s Jake Fischer noted on Tuesday, there is indeed a strong sense from sources close to the situation that Jackson is the preferred candidate of Kings owner Vivek Ranadive. But the Kings insist there’s a level playing field, and that second-year general manager Monte McNair will be given the leeway to make the final decision. -via The Athletic / May 5, 2022

“Mike is willing to take the job based on the fact that he knows he’ll be supported and have a chance to win,” LeGarie said. “He sees this as a good job and looks forward to being asked to be the head coach.” LeGarie said the job is appealing to Brown for a number of reasons. “First and foremost, he likes the people who are working there,” LeGarie said. “He loves the arena. He thinks that’s a natural resource that will help attract players because you’ve always got to have a place where the fans are involved and the facilities are terrific. And he believes the team has enough talent to give them a real solid chance of becoming a playoff contender.” -via Sacramento Bee / May 5, 2022
McNair has a ton of work to do in order to finish out the roster, but he has a vision for this franchise and it includes a head coach that fits the style of play and culture that he is looking to build. The goal is to bring in a defensive-minded coach with head coaching experience. Sources have confirmed this, but so does the eyeball test of the three men left standing. -via Kings Beat / May 5, 2022
