What mattered most at UFC on ESPN 52 in Austin, Texas? Here are a few post-fight musings …

Miesha Tate used No. 12 ranking as motivation for dominance at UFC on ESPN 52, appreciation of moment

Miesha Tate reflects on her win at UFC on ESPN 52 and the idea of retirement.

AUSTIN, Texas – Despite her long tenure in the game, [autotag]Miesha Tate[/autotag] is not contemplating retirement.

Tate, a former UFC and Strikeforce women’s bantamweight champion, returned to the cage this past Saturday, dominating and then submitting Julia Avila at UFC on ESPN 52. Tate (21-9 MMA, 7-6 UFC) put on a grappling clinic against Avila (9-3 MMA, 3-2 UFC) and then submitted her with a neck crack in the third round.

The win over Avila marked Tate’s 30th professional fight. Many wondered if that was going to be the last fans saw of Tate, but it looks like there’s a little more left in the tank.

“I don’t feel like that was my last fight, but I feel like any fight I could just know it’s my last one, but I don’t know if I can,” Tate told MMA Junkie at the UFC on ESPN 52 post-fight press conference. “I don’t go into my last fights thinking it’s my last fight – if that makes sense.

“I don’t feel like I’m going into any fight thinking it’s going to be my last, but I’m also going in with the appreciation and the fire that it could be my last. It’s not like it’s pre mediated, but I feel like I’m appreciating these fights in a way that I couldn’t have in the earlier part of my career. … I don’t know how many times I will get to make the walk, and tonight was my 20th victory. I’ve been doing this for 18 years. Some day it will be my last and I want to be sure I get the most out of these moments.”

It’s uncertain how much longer the 37-year-old Tate wil fight for, but she knows the end is coming. What’s certain, is that Tate had a vintage performance on Saturday and a lot was due to a change in mentality and a desire to prove she’s still among the world’s best.

“I wanted this fight to be dominant,” Tate said. “There was a part of me that realized that I haven’t been outside the top 10 rankings the entire time that I’ve been fighting in the UFC, so to see 12 next to my name, I was like, ‘You know what, I have a lot to prove in this fight.’ I had a lot to prove, and I thought I’m going to go out there and maybe for the first time in my career, I’m going to fight with as much of my skill as I can.

“I think I’ve always gone in there thinking what everyone else thinks, ‘I’m tough, and I can endure.’ I kind of made a name for myself for fighting with my heart, but I’m so much better than that.”

UFC on ESPN 52 results: Miesha Tate dominates Julia Avila for late submission

Miesha Tate turned back the clock at UFC on ESPN 52 as she put forth a vintage performance and submitted Julia Avila.

[autotag]Miesha Tate[/autotag] hadn’t competed in 17 months prior, but she dominated her way to victory Saturday in her bantamweight return.

On the UFC on ESPN 52 prelims at Moody Center in Austin, Texas, Tate (21-9 MMA, 7-6 UFC) defeated [autotag]Julia Avila[/autotag] (9-3 MMA, 3-2 UFC) by submission at 1:15 of Round 3.

From the opening seconds of the fight, Tate out-grappled Avila with strong, heavy wrestling and frequent submission attempts. Although Avila did just enough to deny earlier submission tries, she failed to do so early in Round 3 when Tate locked in a rear-naked choke. The tap came quickly.

After the fight, a fired-up Tate mentioned the hard work she put in during training camp and how she was motivated by frequent mentions of “retirement” by MMMA conversationalists.

Despite her domination, Tate appeared to suffer a leg injury and was carried out of the cage by fiancé Johnny Nunez.

Tate, 37, moves to 2-2 since he returned from retirement in 2021. Tate attempted flyweight in her previous bout, a lopsided loss to Lauren Murphy in July 2022, but plans to stick at bantamweight.

Returning from pregnancy, Avila had not competed since June 2021. Avila, 35, falls to 1-2 in her most recent three bouts.

With flyweight ‘error’ in rearview mirror, Miesha Tate confident she’s still one of UFC’s best bantamweights

Miesha Tate analyzed the past, voiced confidence in the present and embraced an uncertain future at UFC Austin media day.

AUSTIN, Texas – [autotag]Miesha Tate[/autotag] knows she’s closer to the end of her career than the beginning.

A pioneer of women’s MMA and a former UFC women’s bantamweight champion, Tate (20-9 MMA, 6-6 UFC) uses her experience and longevity in the sport to view it in a new light. Saturday at UFC on ESPN 52, she returns to bantamweight after a one-off at flyweight in July 2022.

“(I feel) so good,” Tate told MMA Junkie and other reporters at a pre-fight news conference Wednesday. “I’ve been able to keep my caloric intake very high this training camp. I never had to go on a severe deficit, which is great. Making 125, I’m proud of myself. It just goes to show when I set my mind to something, I can do it. That was not easy.”

With that pride, however, Tate realized the sizable weight cut was not for her. She revealed it caused hormonal issues and caused her to be unhealthily lean. Her performance was largely one-sided in the wrong direction when she was bloodied by Lauren Murphy over the course of three rounds.

In the grand scheme of things, Tate isn’t reading too much into the loss – especially now that she’s back at her more natural weight class against Julia Avila (9-2 MMA, 3-1 UFC). A win Saturday could inch her closer to a title shot, one that Tate doesn’t view all that far away.

“I kind of really look at my career as a 135er and just say, ‘Look: 125 was an error,'” Tate said. “I wouldn’t know how I would do unless I tried it. I tried it and I didn’t like it. … I’ve had one very dominant win and finish and I’ve had one very close decision in my second fight back for five rounds in a main event against a top-five-ranked fighter after five years of not doing anything.

“I think if that doesn’t speak to volumes of how close I am to being one of the best in the world, then maybe people are being a bit short-sighted just looking at a piece of paper. I really think that fight, my second-to-last fight, really could’ve gone either way. I think it was very close – very close. I’m still there. I’m still competing very closely with the best women in the division.”

[lawrence-related id=2699671,2699655]

Tate, 37, was introspective when she spoke Wednesday. She analyzed the past and voiced confidence in the present, but also seemed to accept the future – even if she’s not really sure what it holds.

“At some point, this chapter is going to close,” Tate said. “I certainly think I’m much closer to the end of it than I ever have been before. But it didn’t stop with my last fight. I don’t know if it will stop with this fight. I really feel like with any fight at any point, it could be my final fight. I’m OK with that because I’ve built an emperor-worthy life where these wins and losses don’t define me any more. It’s not just everything, like it used to be. Don’t take that the wrong way. I have worked my butt off for this next camp and I want to win this fight more than anything. I’ve worked so hard and I’ve sacrificed and I’ve loved the process. I want to win and I really believe I’m going to.

“But again, I’m much more effort-based than ever before. If I win on Saturday, that’s what I think is meant to be. But if I didn’t, guess what? I wake up on Sunday, my kids are still going to be kissing me. My fiancé is still going to be there. My parents are here. We’re going to go enjoy Austin, Texas. I guess having that mental and emotional flexibility as an athlete gives me a unique and freeing perspective on being able to go in and just have fun – just fight.”
