Michigan State football was completely dominated by top 10 Washington on Saturday evening.

The Huskies traveled across the country and smacked the Spartans, 41-7, in an embarrassing defeat for Michigan State. This was the first game for the Spartans since head coach Mel Tucker was suspended indefinitely due to sexual harassment allegations.

Michigan State’s defense surrendered more than 700 total yards, with Huskies Heisman candidate quarterback Michael Penix Jr. recording 473 yards and four touchdowns in the win. This was arguably one of the worst performances for the Spartans at home in a very long time.

A bad week for Michigan State football got even worse on Saturday.

The Spartans were completely dominated by Washington, 41-7, on Saturday in their first game since Mel Tucker was suspended for sexual harassment allegations. The Huskies led the entire way, with Heisman candidate Michael Penix Jr. carving up the Spartans’ defense for a second straight year.

Harlon Barnett served as the acting head coach for the Spartans in this disappointing blowout loss. It was his first game as the new acting head coach following Tucker’s suspension.

Washington controlled the game from the first quarter on, carrying a 35-0 lead into halftime. Penix threw for 375 yards and four touchdowns in the opening frame, while Michigan State was held to only 146 total yards in the first half.

The Huskies took their foot off the gas pedal in the second half, pulling Penix late in the third quarter after a pair of field goal drives. It took Michigan State until six minutes left in the game to finally put some points on the board thanks to a four-yard Katin Houser touchdown run.

Michigan State starting quarterback Noah Kim struggled in this matchup, completing 12 of 31 passes for 136 yards and one interception. The Spartans rushing attack wasn’t much better with Michigan State leading rusher Nathan Carter being held to 48 yards on 17 attempts.

Penix finished the game with 473 yards and four touchdowns in less than three quarters of action. Washington as a team finished with 713 total yards compared to only 261 for the Spartans.

Michigan State football will return to the field next week for their fourth straight home game to open the season against Maryland. The Spartans’ Big Ten opener against the Terps will kickoff at 3:30 p.m. ET and will be televised on NBC.

Michigan State hosts Washington– here’s what you need to know for this matchup between the Spartans and Huskies

Michigan State will get their first true test of the season on Saturday as they play host to top 10 foe Washington.

The Huskies got the best of the Spartans last year in a non-conference tilt out west, and now Michigan State will host Washington in a revenge game. Both teams enter this matchup with a perfect 2-0 record on the season.

Michigan State defense struggles to contain high-flying Washington passing attack in blowout loss

Saturday night was not one Spartans everywhere will want to remember.

Michigan State dropped their first game of the 2022 season in disappointing fashion on Saturday evening, with the Huskies topping the Spartans, 39-28. The Spartans fell down early and were never able to completely catch back up to the Huskies due to poor defensive play.

Washington quarterback Michael Penix Jr. diced up the Spartans secondary on Saturday, finishing with 397 yards and four touchdowns. Overall, the Spartans were out gained by Washington 503 to 365 in total yards.

Things got off to a rough start off the bat for the Spartans who fell behind 22-0 in the first half. Michigan State was able to finally get some momentum late in the second quarter with a 75-play drive to cut the deficit to 14 points. However, Washington drove right back down the field to score one final touchdown before halftime to carry a 29-8 lead into the break.

In the opening half, Washington scored touchdowns on four of their five drives, and their lone non-scoring drive was a goal line stop by the Spartans’ defense. The Huskies held a 332-to-90 total yards advantage in the first half.

Michigan State was able to open the second half with a touchdown to cut the Huskies’ lead back to two possessions, but Washington would respond with another Penix touchdown pass. The Spartans would end the game with a pair of touchdowns to close the gap before Washington ran the clock out to clinch the victory.

One positive from Saturday was that Michigan State quarterback Payton Thorne looked improved despite the team’s lackluster performance. Thorne finished the game completing 30 of 42 attempts for 323 yards, three touchdowns and one interception.

Another positive for the Spartans was wide receiver Keon Coleman emerging as an offensive threat in the absence of Jayden Reed. Coleman ended the game with nine receptions for 116 yards and two touchdowns.

The Spartans’ rushing attack was held in check all night, with running backs Jalen Berger and Jarek Broussard combining for only 30 yards on 17 attempts. As a team, Michigan State ended the game with 42 rushing yards on 29 attempts.

Michigan State will look to bounce back from Saturday’s brutal loss in their conference opener next week against Minnesota. The Golden Gophers enter this matchup 3-0 on the season, and will be coming off a blowout victory of Colorado this week.
