MSU basketball falls just short to Purdue in Big Ten Tournament quarterfinal

MSU falls just short to Purdue in the Big Ten Tournament quarterfinal

It was a valiant effort from the Spartans, but in the end, Michigan State fell just short to Purdue in the Big Ten Tournament quarterfinal, 67-62.

For the Spartans, it was tough to overcome the top seeded Boilermakers, along with a battle with the ref crew, all game long. What the Spartans did overcome, was a 12-point second half deficit, knotting the game at 56-56 with minutes to play.

Unfortunately, a huge Fletcher Loyer three-pointer gave Purdue the lead once again, and the Spartans couldn’t overcome this final deficit.

Leading the way for MSU was Tyson Walker with 15 points, while Malik Hall added 12 points and Tre Holloman had 10 points. The Spartans finished with 29 total fouls.

The Spartans now await their fate on Selection Sunday with a potential bid to the NCAA Tournament looming.

3 good and 3 bad takeaways from Michigan State basketball’s loss to No. 2 Purdue

3 good and 3 bad takeaways from MSU’s loss to No. 2 Purdue

Michigan State has lost its third straight game on Saturday, dropping a matchup with No. 2 Purdue, 80-74, inside of Mackey Arena.

While the loss isn’t what any Spartan fan wanted, the team showed some really good things in this game, while also showing some inconsistencies that have killed this team all season long.

At the end of the day, it ends up being a loss for MSU, dropping the team to 17-12 (9-9 B1G) on the season. If there is any hope of keeping Tom Izzo and the school’s NCAA Tournament streak alive, there is work that desperately needs to be done.

Let’s take away at 3 good and 3 bad takeaways from MSU’s loss to Purdue:

Michigan State basketball drops road game to No. 2 Purdue

MSU drops another game at Mackey to No. 2 Purdue

The Purdue Boilermakers have clinched a share of the 2023-24 Big Ten regular season championship on Saturday night, courtesy of a win over Michigan State. Purdue beat the Spartans, 80-74, inside of Mackey Arena.

While losing, the Spartans did show a lot of solid qualities and a sense of gamesmanship in this game.

Michigan State jumped out to an early lead on Purdue, taking an 8-point advantage midway through the first half, 24-16. From that point on, Purdue took control of the game.

Purdue outpaced MSU, 38-15, over a 15-minute span to take a 54-39 lead with 14:26 remaining in the game.

The Spartans showed life, though, and cut that Purdue lead all the way down to three, at one point, but ultimately couldn’t get over the hump.

Four Spartans finished in double figures: Tyson Walker (14 points), Jaden Akins (13 points), Malik Hall (12 points) and Xavier Booker (11 points).

Michigan State will be back in action, at home, against Northwestern on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

Michigan State basketball falls just short at home against No. 3 Purdue

MSU came up just short against No. 3 Purdue on Monday afternoon:

Michigan State dropped a pivotal Big Ten conference game against the Purdue Boilermakers on Monday afternoon at the Breslin Center. Purdue’s Zach Edey’s layup with 2.2 seconds remaining in the game proved to be the game winner, giving the No. 3 ranked Boilermakers the win.

It was a horrid start for MSU, going down 24-11 early, but the team was able to battle back to cut the deficit to 2, 27-25 at the halftime break.

Both teams battled, and went back and forth trading blows in the second half, cumulating in a last minute thriller.

Tyson Walker made a bucket putting MSU up 62-61 with 11 seconds remaining in the game, his 30th point of the contest.

While MSU felt confident, Zach Edey had other plans, scoring a basket over Mady Sissoko to regain the Purdue lead, 64-63.

Michigan State got one last chance, but it wasn’t meant to be when Walker air balled a 3 at the buzzer off of a side-out inbounds play.

Michigan State will be back in action against No. 23 Rutgers on Thursday at the Breslin Center.

Michigan State basketball trots out new starting lineup against Purdue

MSU is starting a new lineup against Purdue

Tom Izzo promised changes during his midweek press conference after the Spartans got blitzed by 26-points at Iowa. Those changes came to fruition today in the Saturday matchup against Purdue, when the Spartans trotted out a new starting lineup.

Izzo is known for being stubborn when it comes to the starting lineup and keeping consistency with his lineups, so making these changes is a big deal.

Michigan State will be starting A.J. Hoggard, Max Christie, Gabe Brown, Malik Hall and Julius Marble.

Michigan State vs Purdue Game Preview

Why Michigan State Will Win

Besides all of the production from Kenneth Walker, what else is Michigan State doing that’s so right as the No. 3 team in the College Football Playoff rankings?

It’s sort of an odd-great team.

It runs well – it has one of the Heisman front-runners – but it’s not all that great on third downs, the defense isn’t all that great at stopping teams from moving the chains, the team commits a bazillion penalties, and it’s dead last in the Big Ten in total defense.

And it’s still unbeaten and coming off a great win over Michigan.

The team has a way of coming through when it needs to. It’s almost like it has to settle in and then outlast the opponent.

That’s what happens when you have a team that plays with a whole lot of confidence. It comes up with the timely sack, and the takeaway, and the punt return, and whatever is needed in close game after close game.

And it has the nation’s leading rusher.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 10

Why Purdue Will Win

Yeah, Michigan State knows how to win, and it’s playing with swagger, and it’s tough, and it’s clutch, and blah, blah, blah, blah …

This defense gives up a TON of yards.

It doesn’t allow a lot of points, though – again, it’s an odd team – but even so, this might be the exact type of fit for Purdue.

This isn’t a Drew Brees/Billy Dicken/Kyle Orton Basketball on Grass type of team. It plays games in the 20s – the Boilermakers have yet to play a game this year with a point total over 51.

Unlike Michigan State, Purdue doesn’t get hit with penalties – it gets flagged the fewest times in the Big Ten. The defense only gives up 314 yards per game and is great on third downs, and overall, it’s more about ball control than anything else.

Michigan State has the offensive pop and firepower, but …

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

Purdue doesn’t give up much on the ground.

Illinois was able to rumble a bit, but Wisconsin was the only team to do much of anything – no one other than the Badgers ran for 200 yards on this bunch.

Walker won’t exactly get bottled up, but he’s going to be in for a long day.

The Boilermaker pass defense that came up with four picks against Iowa and four more against Nebraska in the last three weeks will come up with a few against Payton Thorne, who threw four interceptions in the last two games, and …

Michigan State will once again find a way.

It’s not going to be dominant, but it’ll be another win with Walker breaking through with one big late scoring run.

Purdue’s offense will put up yards, but not enough points, because that’s how the Michigan State defense rolls.
