MSU basketball handles Oakland for second straight impressive win

For the second time in three days, Michigan State basketball looked pretty darn good

For the second time in three days, Michigan State basketball looked pretty darn good.

The Spartans used a strong finish to the first half and a hot start to the second to make easy work of Oakland, 79-62, on Monday night from the Breslin Center. It was the second blowout victory for the Spartans in the last three days, following Michigan State’s dismantling of Baylor on Saturday.

The game was tight for most of the first half, with Michigan State leading the entire way in the opening frame. The Spartans were able to build an eight-point cushion at the break thanks to a late half-run, carrying a 30-22 advantage into halftime.

The second half started just how the first half ended for the Spartans — hot. Michigan State came out firing in the second half to build a 20-point lead by the 12-minute mark of the second half to make for a stress-free victory over Oakland. The Spartans would build a lead as large as 27 points in the second half.

Michigan State was led in scoring by Tyson Walker who finished with 14 points. Walker scored his 1,000 career point as a Spartan in the victory over Oakland.

Michigan State also got double-digit scoring efforts from AJ Hoggard and Jaden Akins — who each dropped 11 points. Hoggard also had seven assists in the win.

With the victory, Michigan State improved to 6-5 overall on the year. Michigan State basketball will return to the floor for one more game before the holiday break with a non-conference matchup against Stony Brook on Thursday. Tipoff from the Breslin Center is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. ET and will be available only on streaming service Big Ten Plus.

MSU Basketball vs. Oakland: Stream, broadcast info, prediction for Monday

Check out all of the key game details for this matchup between the Spartans and Grizzlies

Michigan State basketball is back on the floor on Monday after a short turnaround.

Michigan State will welcome in-state rival Oakland to the Breslin Center on Monday night for a non-conference matchup. The Spartans were last seen dominating No. 6 Baylor on Saturday to pick up a marquee win and get back to .500 on the year. Michigan State is 5-5 overall on the year.

Oakland enters this matchup with a 6-5 record on the year and looking to add another big-time upset on their resume. The Grizzlies knocked off Xavier earlier this year and played both Ohio State and Illinois tight in narrow defeats to open the season.

Can Michigan State build off Saturday’s impressive win over Baylor with another win on Monday night? Check out my prediction and all of the key game details for this matchup between the Spartans and Grizzlies below:

MSU basketball overcomes sloppy start to beat Oakland, 67-54, on Wednesday

It wasn’t pretty, but Michigan State basketball picked up a victory over in-state foe Oakland tonight

It wasn’t pretty, but Michigan State picked up a victory over in-state foe Oakland on Wednesday evening, 67-54, from the Breslin Center.

The Spartans got off to a slow start but used a strong finish to the first half and electric start to the second half to pick up the win over the Grizzlies. With the victory, Michigan State improves to 8-4 on the year.

Michigan State got off to a sloppy start, with it being clear there was a little bit of rust from the last time they took the floor 11 days ago. The Spartans trailed Oakland for most of the half and struggled to get anything going offensively — finishing the opening frame with 11 turnovers.

The Spartans would, however, rally late in the half and end on an 8-0 run to hold a 29-24 advantage going into the break.

Michigan State would come out with a much better effort in the second half to build up a lead they’d never surrender. The Spartans opened the second half on a 17-to-3 run and eventually led by as many as 22 points. Oakland wouldn’t go away easy, getting the game back to within 11 points with a minute left in the game.

The Spartans were led offensively by Joey Hauser (16 points), Jaden Akins (15 points) and Tyson Walker (13 points). A.J. Hoggard also played a big role in the victory with eight points and eight assists.

Former Spartan guard Rocket Watts finished with only four points for the Grizzlies in his first game back at the Breslin Center since transferring from Michigan State.

Michigan State basketball will return to the court next week against Buffalo on Dec. 30. Tip off from the Breslin Center between the Spartans and Bulls is scheduled for 6 p.m. ET and can be seen on the Big Ten Network.
