Michigan State had been an underdog in each of their last four games, with three of those games being blowout losses. However, Michigan State is once again a favorite in a matchup they should win vs. Maryland.

Michigan State beat Maryland earlier this season on a last-second bucket from Malik Hall. Since that win, the Spartans have gone 2-7 in a late-season struggle.

Michigan State basketball survives Maryland comeback on late Malik Hall bucket

Michigan State once again survived an upset scare thanks to a last second bucket

Michigan State once again survived an upset scare thanks to a last second bucket.

The Spartans watched a double-digit lead evaporate in the second half, but were able to still come out on top against Maryland, 65-63, from the XFINITY Center in College Park, Md. on Tuesday. Malik Hall dropped the winning bucket with 1.9 seconds left in the game to push Michigan State past the Terps.

The first half was back-and-forth until the final few minutes when the Spartans went on a big run. Michigan State ended the half on a 10-0 run to take a 35-25 lead into the break.

Michigan State was able to keep their strong end to the first half going after halftime, with the Spartans building an early 15-point lead. However, Maryland wouldn’t go away, using a 11-0 run to cut that lead to just four points.

It was once again a back-and-forth game until the final minutes, with Maryland finally tying it up with 2:40 to go in the game. It would remain tied into the final seconds, until Hall dropped the winning bucket for the Spartans. Maryland’s last second half-court attempt missed to clinch the Michigan State victory.

The Spartans were led offensively by Hall — who dropped 16 points and also grabbed four rebounds. Joey Hauser and Marcus Bingham also reached double-digits in scoring with 10 points each.

With the win, Michigan State moves into a three-way tie with Wisconsin and Illinois for first place in the Big Ten. The Spartans are now 17-4 overall on the season and 8-2 in conference play.

Michigan State returns to the court on Saturday in their second of two road games this week, with a tough trip to Rutgers. Tipoff from the “RAC” is scheduled for 4 p.m. ET and the game can be seen on FS1.

MSU Football tops Maryland to setup top 10 showdown with Ohio State

MSU improves to 9-1 on the season and continues to control their destiny in the Big Ten title race with 40-21 victory over Maryland

[mm-video type=video id=01fmc204vd3vhy6cddef playlist_id=01eqbz825g32p3akwt player_id=none image=https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/video/thumbnail/mmplus/01fmc204vd3vhy6cddef/01fmc204vd3vhy6cddef-2f65a65d0d92916db2308283ff53fd24.jpg]

Like many Michigan State games this season, it wasn’t always pretty but the Spartans found a way to pick up the win.

Michigan State remained perfect at home this year with a 40-21 victory over Maryland on Saturday. The win moved Michigan State to 9-1 and 6-1 in Big Ten play on the year.

The Spartans never trailed against Maryland, but this by no means was an easy going victory for Michigan State. The Spartans needed multiple defensive stops in their own end in the second half to help keep a comfortable lead throughout.

Michigan State jumped out to an early 13-0 lead over the Terps and led by as many as 20 points in the first half. The Spartans ended the opening frame with a 27-13 advantage over Maryland.

The Spartans were able to add to their lead early in the second half but the Terrapins responded right away to get the deficit back to only 13 points. From there, it was a back-and-forth sequence of defensive stops before Michigan State finally pushed their lead to 19 points on Kenneth Walker’s second touchdown of the game in the fourth quarter. That ended up being the final score of the game.

The Spartans were led offensively by the three-headed monster of quarterback Payton Thorne, Walker and wide receiver Jayden Reed. Thorne finished the game with 287 passing yards, four touchdowns and one interception. Walker had 172 total yards and two touchdowns, and Reed had 114 receiving yards and two touchdowns.

With the win, Michigan State sets up a major matchup with Ohio State next week. The Buckeyes easily beat Purdue on Saturday, and both teams will now enter this game with the winner taking the top spot in the Big Ten East Division with one week to go in the season.

Kickoff from Columbus, Ohio next week is scheduled for 12 p.m. EST. The game will be televised nationally on ABC.

Why Michigan State Will Win

Really, Michigan State is off the bubble – beating Michigan, Ohio State and Illinois in the last six games has something to do with that – but getting bounced out of the Big Ten Tournament right away would at least make things a wee bit iffy.

Motivation won’t be a problem.

What’s the team doing right lately? It helped that Michigan had already won the Big Ten regular season title, and the Spartans got the Illini and Buckeyes at home, but the defense has cranked it up a few notches, the rebounding is still solid, and now they get a reeling Maryland team that …

Why Maryland Will Win

The Terps beat Michigan State a few weeks ago.

Really, Maryland is off the bubble – going on a five-game winning streak has something to do with that – but losing to Northwestern and Penn State over the last two games means getting bounced out of the Big Ten Tournament right away would at least make things a wee bit iffy.

Motivation won’t be a problem.

What did the Terps do to beat the Spartans? The played great D, hit everything – making half of their three – and relied on MSU not being able to shoot a lick.

This is a rising MSU team, but it’s also miserable from three over the last several games. The Terps have to win the battle from the outside and must at least not get obliterated on the boards.

What’s Going To Happen

The Terps will make more threes but they’ll get obliterated on the boards.

The Maryland losses and the power outages against Northwestern and Penn State are really, really concerning. Michigan State will have just a wee more intensity as it makes up for the ugly 73-55 loss from a few days ago.

Michigan State (1-3) vs Maryland (2-1) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on the NFL, go to BetMGM

Why Michigan State Will Win

For all of the problems Michigan State has had – and the pass rush isn’t generating sacks – the defense keeps on getting into the backfield. It started with 11 tackles for loss against Rutgers, and it kept on going from there with a whole lot of pressure and good plays to do its part to keep the team in games.

The defense as a whole hasn’t been a rock, but it’s been good against the run – outside of issues with Iowa, but the secondary stepped up a bit in the blowout loss – and overall it hasn’t been the problem.

Offensively, it’s been a rough run, but the passing game has been able to move a bit. However …

Why Maryland Will Win

The Michigan State quarterback situation is a problem. Payton Thorne needs more time and seasoning, and Rocky Lombardi can’t stop turning the ball over.

The offensive production is last in the Big Ten, there’s no ground game whatsoever, and the turnovers are coming in bunches. MSU didn’t give the ball away against Michigan, and it won 27-24. It gave it up seven times against Rutgers, and lost. It gave the ball away three times against Iowa and four times against Indiana, and lost both games.

Maryland isn’t big on generating turnovers, but it’s not going to lose battle here. Offensively, as long as QB Taulia Tagovailoa can stay hot – he has hit 72% of his passes for 676 yards and six touchdowns with one pick, hitting big play after big play – there won’t be a problem.

MSU doesn’t have the ability to keep up any sort of a pace.

What’s Going To Happen

Can Maryland keep it all going before it had to shut things down before the Ohio State game last week? Can Michigan State be anything but totally miserable after scoring a total of seven points in the last two games?

Sort of, and yes.

The Spartan defense will bother Tagovailoa, and it’ll hold down the Terp running game just enough keep the game alive. Michigan State’s offense will be decent against the Big Ten’s worst defense, and then the turnovers will come.

Michigan State will be better, but the mistakes will still come.
