MSU PG Jeremy Fears talks ‘weathering the storm’ in huge win over Illinois

Watch MSU point guard Jeremy Fears recap the Spartans’ massive victory over Illinois on Sunday

Michigan State basketball knew it wouldn’t be easy but they were able to “weather the storm” to earn a massive win on Sunday.

Michigan State overcame a poor start to knock off ranked foe Illinois from the Breslin Center. The Spartans won by the final score of 80-78.

Michigan State trailed by as many as 10 in the first half, but a strong finish to the opening frame resulted in a tie game at the break. The second half was back-and-forth most of the way, and it came down to Michigan State holding off Illinois in the final seconds of the game for the win.

With the win, Michigan State remains perfect in Big Ten play with a 7-0 conference mark. The Spartans are now 16-2 overall and have won 11 straight games.

Michigan State starting point guard Jeremy Fears met with the media following the victory over the Fighting Illini — hear what he had to say in the video below.

MSU-Illinois Prediction, Matchup Analysis from LSJ’s Graham Couch

Graham Couch of the Lansing State Journal provides his prediction for MSU Basketball vs. Illinois on Sunday

Michigan State basketball will face arguably its toughest opponent of the season thus far on Sunday afternoon from the Breslin Center.

Michigan State basketball will put its 10-game winning streak on the line in a home matchup against No. 19 Illinois. This will be arguably the biggest game of the week in Big Ten play.

Michigan State comes into this marquee matchup extremely hot. The Spartans haven’t lost since the Maui Invitational in November, and hold a 15-2 overall record and 6-0 mark in Big Ten play.

Illinois has also been playing well as of late, with a 13-4 overall record and 5-2 mark in Big Ten play. The Fighting Illini hammered Indiana on the road earlier this week, and is in the mix with the Spartans for the Big Ten title.

Michigan State is listed as a small favorite in this matchup. Tipoff is scheduled for 12 p.m. ET on Sunday and the game will be televised on CBS.

Graham Couch of the Lansing State Journal is back again to offer his thoughts on this matchup between Michigan State and Illinois. Click here to see how Couch believes this game will play out and who he has winning in the end.

MSU Basketball at Illinois: Stream, broadcast info, prediction for Thursday

Check out all of the key game details for this matchup between the Spartans and Fighting Illini

Michigan State will hit the road again for a major conference battle at top 10 Illinois on Thursday night.

The Spartans enter this matchup looking to get back to winning after their modest five-game winning streak was snapped by Northwestern on Sunday evening. Michigan State is 9-6 overall and 1-3 in Big Ten play this year, and needs a win over the Fighting Illini badly here.

Illinois is also looking to bounce back after a narrow loss at Purdue last Friday. The Fighting Illini have gotten off to a great start to this year, and sit at 11-3 overall and 2-1 in conference play.

Can Michigan State bounce back from Sunday’s tough loss at Northwestern with an upset of Illinois? Check out my prediction and all of the key game details for this matchup between the Spartans and Fighting Illini below:

Michigan State enters this game in the midst of a tough stretch, where they’ve dropped three of their last four games. That includes blowing a 14-point second-half lead against Penn State earlier this week.

Illinois also is looking to bounce back from a mid-week loss after Rutgers got the best of them on Wednesday. Illinois still remains tied for first place in the Big Ten despite that loss, and will need a win over the Spartans to remain at the top of the league.

Michigan State at Illinois college basketball odds, picks and best bets

Analyzing Tuesday’s Michigan State Spartans at Illinois Fighting Illini sports betting odds and lines, with college basketball betting picks

The Michigan State Spartans (16-8, 8-5 Big Ten) visit the conference-rival Illinois Fighting Illini (16-7, 8-4) for a Tuesday clash at State Farm Center tipping-off at 9 p.m. ET. We analyze the Michigan State-Illinois odds and betting lines, with college basketball betting advice and tips around this matchup.

Michigan State at Illinois: Three things you need to know

1. Michigan State housed Illinois in their first meeting this season, 76-65, behind a 20-point, 6-assist effort from Cassius Winston. The Spartans defense stifled the Illini as they went just 22-for-75 from the field, including a dismal 3 of 28 from behind the arc.

2. Illinois has dropped back-to-back games, both to ranked Big Ten foes, and Michigan State has lost a season-high three straight games, including a 77-68 loss to Michigan.

3. The Fighting Illini cracked into the top 25 this season for the first time since their head coach, Brad Underwood, took over the program in 2017. Their best AP ranking was No. 19 prior to their recent slide to No. 22.

Prediction

Michigan State 72, Illinois 64

Moneyline (ML)

As has been the case for all of Tom Izzo’s tenure as Michigan State’s head coach, the Spartans are much more talented than the Fighting Illini. Michigan State has seven active players in RSCI’s top-100 recruits ranking and Illinois has just two.

Also, just like they struggled in the first game, don’t expect the Fighting Illini to hit many threes Tuesday. Illinois is ranked 287th in 3-point percentage while Michigan State is ranked 12th in opponent 3-point percentage. Also, Michigan State is one of the best programs at cleaning up the glass—the Spartans are ranked seventh in the nation in rebounds per game and have a plus-9 average differential. Since 2017, Michigan State has the most wins as a road favorite (18-8 record), the most wins against ranked competition (17-7), and Illinois is just 3-16 versus ranked competition.

BET MICHIGAN STATE (-129).

Against the Spread (ATS)

I feel good about Michigan State (-1.5, -118) in this spot but I don’t like the idea of laying $118 to win $100 for the Spartans to win by 2 or more points. Let’s PASS on an against the spread wager and just stick with the moneyline at nearly-even odds.

Over/Under (O/U)

TAKE UNDER 141.5 (-110). Illinois has a 5-8 Over/Under record at home this season and 63% of Michigan State’s away games have went Under the projected total since 2017. Also, the Under is 9-3 in the Fighting Illini’s last 12 games as an underdog and the Under is 7-1-1 in the Spartans’ last nine games as a favorite.
