Report: Michigan State football tabs Marco Coleman as new DL coach

It appears that MSU has its new defensive line coach and it is a longtime NFL veteran

Michigan State and former MSU defensive line coach Ron Burton mutually agreed to part ways earlier this offseason, leaving a vacancy on the Michigan State coaching staff. That vacancy has reportedly been filled by Marco Coleman, who will take over as the Spartans new defensive line coach.

Coleman is a native of Dayton, Ohio, and played his college football at Georgia Tech. After a successful college career, Coleman would get drafted in the first round of the NFL Draft before going on to have a successful 14-year career in the league. His NFL career totaled him 520 tackles, 65.5 sacks and 18 forced fumbles.

Following his playing career, Coleman has taken up a strong interest in coaching and has built up a solid resume to bring to East Lansing with him. In 2018, Coleman served as the assistant defensive line coach with the Oakland Raiders. After that, Coleman would go home to his alma mater and spent the past 3 seasons at Georgia Tech as the outside linebackers and defensive ends coach.

Mel Tucker made the move to pry Coleman away from his alma mater and come to East Lansing as their new DL coach.

When Michigan State hired Mel Tucker away from Colorado to helm their Football program, he had some decisions to make on his administration. While Tucker did go out and find some new staff members, he also decided to keep a few members of Dantonio’s staff around. One of those staff members was defensive line coach Ron Burton, who will reportedly be getting a nice raise. Tony Paul of the Detroit News reported today that Burton has signed a 2-year deal worth $510,000 per year.

According to 247sports, Burton made $424,616 last season under Dantonio.

Burton was originally slated to depart MSU for Indiana but Tucker was able to get him to stay. That decision seems to have paid off for Burton.

It was reported earlier in the year that the Spartans new offensive line coach Chris Kapilovic will be making $700,000 per year and wide receivers coach Courtney Hawkins will be at $387,000 per year.

When he agreed to join the team as their new head coach, Mel Tucker made sure to also get a sizable increase in available salary for MSU Football coaches and staff. With the added funds, $6 million for assistant coaches, salary information is starting to be released about Michigan State’s new coaches thanks to the Freedom of Information Act, and Chris Solari of the Detroit Free Press reported that new offensive line coach Chris Kapilovic will be making $700,000 per year over the next two seasons.

This is over $200,000 per year more than former Michigan State offensive line coach Jim Bollman made, which was $498,462. Kapilovic made $425,000 last year at Colorado under Tucker. Not only is this a big increase for the new OL coach, but it’s also a sign of the major investment the Spartans are making in their supporting cast. In 2019, the highest-paid MSU assistant coach was Mike Tressel who made $667,385.

Another day, another staff hire for Mel Tucker and MSU Football as they just announced that Mel Tucker will be adding William Peagler to his staff as the new Running Backs Coach at Michigan State. Peagler worked on Tucker’s staff as an offensive analyst at Colorado and will now follow Tucker to East Lansing.

Tucker has done a good job balancing his staff hires, with some personnel following him back from Colorado while also tapping into some Michigan State veterans like Ron Burton and Darien Harris. I admittedly do not have much information about Peagler as a coaching talent so I won’t comment too much on the merits of this hire and we will see how it plays out.

According to a report from BuffStampede.com, Colorado offensive line coach Chris Kapilovic is expected to follow his former head coach Mel Tucker to East Lansing to fill the same position with Michigan State Football. Kapilovic will fill the position that was left vacant after Jim Bollman retired. Bollman had held the position since 2013.

With the signing of Kapilovic, the Spartans new head coach Mel Tucker is starting to round out his staff. Kapilovic will join former MSU defensive coordinator Mike Tressel and defensive line coach Ron Burton as the first three coaches to officially be announced as being part of Tucker’s staff.

“The experience here for me and my family has been awesome,” Kapilovic told BuffStampede, which is part of 247Sports.com. “We love living here, love the community. I loved coaching at CU. I love my players more than anything. That group has done everything I asked of them, and more. So, that is the part that rips your heart out.”
