Michigan is the No. 2 seed in the College Football Playoff rankings after an undefeated regular season that ended with a 45-23 rivalry win at Ohio State. The Wolverines are heavily favored with their championship aspirations higher than ever.

Purdue is riding hot heading into this one, after finishing their season with 3 wins — over then No. 21 Illinois, Northwestern and Indiana. They are looking to shake up the playoff picture with a huge upset win that would also clinch their 1st Big Ten Championship since 1929.

Michigan 45, Purdue 13

Michigan should easily win this game, especially with the way they played against Ohio State and Penn State, who both will likely be playing in NY6 Bowl Games. Michigan knows how to beat good competition. While I do believe in this line, it is far too lopsided to risk money on either team.

Against the spread

LEAN MICHIGAN -16.5 (-113).

Michigan should win this game by a heavy margin, and if they play the way they played against Ohio State it could get ugly for Purdue. Michigan beat Ohio State at home by 22 points without star RB Blake Corum. With this game being played at a neutral location, the Wolverines should walk away with a 20-plus point win.

Over/Under

BET OVER 52 (-108). 

Michigan alone averages 39.8 points per game, if they can score the way they have been able to score all season then the over should be easily covered here. Against a Purdue defense that allows more rushing yards per game (128.8) than they get themselves (125.8), RB Donovan Edwards should be able to run them off the field, as he did against Ohio State. Expect this Michigan offense to be able to do whatever they want in this game and carry the Over 52 (-108).

The Michigan Wolverines (11-8, 5-4 Big Ten) visit Mackey Arena to take on the No. 3 Purdue Boilermakers (19-3, 8-3). Tip-off is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. ET (on FOX). Below, we look at the Michigan vs. Purdue odds and lines, and make our expert college basketball picks, predictions and bets.

The Boilermakers have been one of the more dominant teams in the Big Ten. They’ve won 7 of their last 8 games, covering the spread in 5 of them. While Purdue is just 5-6 against the spread (ATS) in conference play, Michigan is a Big Ten-worst 3-6 ATS against inner-conference competition.

Purdue is led by G Jaden Ivey, who averages 17.0 points, 5.1 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.1 steals per game. C Zach Edey, a 7-4 sophomore who averages 15.0 points, 7.5 rebounds and 1.2 blocks per game, is also a high-impact player.

Purdue will count on Edey to take on 7-1 C Hunter Dickinson, who leads Michigan in scoring (17.5 PPG) and rebounds (8.2 RPG). The Juwan Howard-coached Wolverines have been a disappointment this season, covering just 7 times in their 19 games.

Crazy things happen in Big Ten basketball, and I wouldn’t lay -475 on a favorite in a conference battle. It’s just not worth the risk.

Against the spread

BET PURDUE -8.5 (-122).

Purdue’s only time not covering in its last 4 outings was against Ohio State in an 81-78 victory Jan. 30. The Boilermakers were 11-point favorites against the 16th-ranked Buckeyes in a game they let slip away after leading by double digits most of the second half. Now, against a pitiful Wolverines team, the Boilers are only giving 8.5 points.

With Edey, Purdue should be able to neutralize Dickinson for a good chunk of the game.

Similarly, Ivey has been an all-out star this season and should be in store for a solid game against Michigan’s defense, one allowing 68.2 PPG, the 160th-most in the nation.

Michigan has covered just twice in its last 8. Lastly, Michigan is 2-5 ATS on the road this season.

  1. Michigan rebounded from its first loss of the season (75-57 at Minnesota Saturday) with an 87-63 win over Maryland Tuesday as an 11-point home favorite. The Wolverines opened with a 17-3 run, hit their first five 3-pointers and led 42-25 at the break to leave the Terps in the dust. Senior F Isaiah Livers was 4-for-5 behind the 3-point line and scored a game-high 20 points. Freshman C Hunter Dickinson leads the Wolverines in scoring (15.7 PPG), rebounds (7.5 RPG) and blocks (1.5 BPG).
  2. Purdue enters on a 4-game win streak, most recently upsetting No. 18 Ohio State 67-65 Tuesday as a 5.5-point road underdog. G Jaden Ivey’s tiebreaking 3-pointer with 5 seconds left was the game-winner. The freshman finished with 15 points, eight of them in the final 3:11 when the Boilermakers overcame a 6-point deficit. Junior F Trevion Williams leads Purdue with 15.4 PPG and 9.5 RPG.
  3. Michigan owns a 4-game win streak vs. Purdue, including a two-game sweep last season. The Wolverines won 71-63 as a 4-point road underdogs Feb. 22, 2020, and needed overtime to claim an 84-78 victory as 6-point home favorites Jan. 9, 2020. Purdue’s Williams scored 36 points in the OT loss.

I’d back Purdue (+170) if Mackey Arena would be filled to the brim with fans, but that’s not the case during this unique “COVID-19” season.

The Boilers are 6-0 at home this season, including 3-0 in conference play, but the Wolverines (-200) are the much better team. PASS and focus on the spread.

Against the spread (ATS)

MICHIGAN -4.5 (-110) is the STRONGEST PLAY – 1½ times your usual wager. The Wolverines are 7-0-1 ATS in the last eight games of this series. Look for that trend to continue.

Second, the Wolverines lead the Big Ten in field-goal percentage (51.4%) and defensive FG percentage (37.9%) in all games, while they’re outrebounding opponents a league-best 8.0 RPG in Big Ten action.

ATS: Michigan 10-3 | Purdue 7-7-2

Over/Under (O/U)

UNDER 139.5 (-110) is the way to go. Both defenses rank in the top 3 of the conference.
