Jonathan Smith comments on Michigan State vs. Michigan rivalry

Jonathan Smith commented on the MSU vs. U of M rivalry: ‘We will not forget Saturday night’

Jonathan Smith has played and coached in big rivalry games before. Coming from Oregon State, he has dealt with the Oregon rivalry for much of his football career. However, coming out of a loss to Michigan in a game that ended in an ugly incident, Jonathan Smith noted that the Michigan vs. MSU rivalry ‘is different’.

Here is what he had to say in his press conference Monday:

“We will not forget Saturday night, I promise you that. But we’re moving forward.” Smith also said he could feel the ‘genuine dislike’ between the fan bases before the game. “After experiencing this one time, this thing is different. And that crystallized for me on Saturday.”

Jonathan Smith recalls ‘Trouble with the Snap’ play from Michigan State vs. Michigan rivalry

Jonathan Smith does remember seeing one famous play from a Michigan vs. MSU game in years past that stood out to him

Jonathan Smith hasn’t been able to participate in the Michigan State football vs. Michigan rivalry yet, but that will change this weekend when the Spartans head to Ann Arbor to face their long-time rivals.

While Smith told the media he and his team have been learning a lot about the rivalry since joining the program, when asked specifically about any memories about the rivalry that stand out, Smith did allude to a certain moment that is enshrined in the memories of anyone who watched that game, on either side:

“I seem to remember some highlights. I remember a punter that …” Smith trailed off on Monday. “I’m not going there in regards to multiple (games), but that one stands out.”

Pretty clearly, Smith is referring to the infamous ‘Trouble with the Snap’ game from nine years ago, when the Spartans beat Michigan on a last second fumble recovery for a touchdown by Jalen Watts-Jackson on a Michigan punt. It’s a game that Jim Harbaugh says he still thinks about often and is still not over.

We now know the kickoff time and TV details for one of the biggest Michigan State matchups in a really long time.

It was announced on Monday that Michigan State’s home game against rivals Michigan will be a noon game and be televised nationally on FOX on Oct. 30. The game will be part of FOX’s “Big Noon Kickoff” series.

The decision to have this massive rivalry matchup be a noon game has been met with a lot of anger from the two fanbases. Some — including myself — were hoping this would be a night game but that is sadly not the case.

Both Michigan and Michigan State are currently undefeated and that should remain the case for next week’s game. Michigan State is on a bye this week and Michigan hosts Northwestern in a game where the Wolverines are three-touchdown favorites.
