Kirk Herbstreit reacts to son, Chase, signing with Michigan football

This is gonna rankle some Buckeye feathers! #GoBlue

ESPN College GameDay host and Ohio State alum Kirk Herbstreit has always shown impartiality to his rival, to the point where he often has gone out of his way to praise Michigan football. Before, it may have been because he’s worked to be objective and gain the trust of the maize and blue faithful. Now? It may be for a different reason entirely.

That’s because on Sunday, 2025 Cincinnati (Ohio) St. Xavier three-star quarterback Chase Herbstreit, Kirk’s son, committed and signed to the Michigan Wolverines, joining No. 1 overall prospect, five-star Bryce Underwood as the team’s second quarterback signee in the 2025 class.

After Michigan football announced Herbstreit’s signing, his father took to X (formerly Twitter) to react to the news of his son joining what his former team now calls ‘the team up north.’

With scholarships increasing from 85 to 105, Herbstreit is considered a scholarship player. However, with the new move, that means the Wolverines have to also eliminate approximately 30 walk-on roles they would have had before. Still, Herbstreit will be taking on a scholarship that may have not previously been available with the limits beforehand, which does allow the Wolverines to build depth within the quarterback room.

Now the question is: Will we ever see Herbstreit wearing Michigan gear? After all, he’s not the only famous rival father to send his son to Ann Arbor this class as Jason Strayhorn, the MSU radio analyst, has seen his son Kaden also sign with the Wolverines this year.

Alabama football 2024 bowl game opponent and destination announced

Here’s who the Alabama Crimson Tide will play in their 2024 bowl game.

The Alabama Crimson Tide have learned their destination and opponent for the 2024 college football bowl season.

Alabama will face the Michigan Wolverines in the ReliaQuest Bowl on Dec. 31 at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Fla. Kickoff is set for 11 a.m. CT. The game will be televised on ESPN.

The ReliaQuest Bowl confirmed the news Sunday. The event was previously known as the Outback Bowl from 1995-2022.

The Crimson Tide and Wolverines met in the College Football Playoff at the Rose Bowl last season on Jan. 1, 2024. Michigan won, 27-20, in overtime en route to winning the national championship a week later over the Washington Huskies, then coached by Kalen DeBoer.

Alabama and Michigan look a lot different this year.

Both coaches from last season’s Rose Bowl are no longer with their respective teams. Nick Saban announced his retirement on Jan. 10. Former Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh left Ann Arbor to return to the NFL and a head coaching job with the Los Angeles Chargers. DeBoer was announced as Alabama’s head coach on Jan. 12.

Neither Alabama or Michigan will be playing for much more than bragging rights and the hope of finishing a disappointing season on a high note when they meet in Tampa.

Alabama went 9-3 in the regular season and had hoped to sneak in to the 12-team College Football Playoff. Instead, the selection committee chose the SMU Mustangs over Alabama Sunday.

Michigan is 7-5 under first-year coach Sherrone Moore but scored a thrilling 13-10 upset win over the Ohio State Buckeyes in “The Game” to close its regular season. Alabama closed its regular season with a 28-14 win over the Auburn Tigers in the Iron Bowl.

Alabama and Michigan have met six times on the gridiron, five of them in the postseason. The all-time head to head series is tied 3-3.

The 2024 ReliaQuest Bowl will mark Alabama’s first appearance in this annual postseason event since New Year’s Day 1997. That day, the Crimson Tide also played Michigan and won 17-14 in Gene Stallings’ final game as Alabama’s head coach.

Michigan football gets a commitment from Kirk Herbstreit’s QB son

This is fun! #GoBlue

Will a former Ohio State quarterback now be actively rooting for the maize and blue? Because it sure looks like it.

Kirk Herbstreit is a college football legend, more so for his role on ESPN College GameDay and as the lead CFB color commentator, but he also suited up for the Buckeyes during his own time in college. He’s had multiple sons play college football, including Jake and Tye, who both first played for Clemson before transferring to OSU. Well, his son Chase Herbstreit is choosing a different option entirely, as the 2025 Cincinnati (Ohio) St. Xavier quarterback is committing to Michigan football per On3’s Hayes Fawcett.

Herbstreit joins No. 1 overall QB Bryce Underwood in the 2025 class. He’s unrated according to 247Sports but is a three-star quarterback according to On3, which has him as the No. 128 signal caller and No. 102 player in the state of Ohio.

Who is the chair of the 2024 College Football Playoff selection committee?

Who’s leading the 13-person CFP selection committee?

Now a decade into its existence, the College Football Playoff is expanding to 12 teams for the first time at the conclusion of the 2024 season.

The expansion comes following the most controversial field of the four-team era in which an undefeated, ACC champion Florida State was left out of the field. Now, the new system essentially guarantees that will never happen again with five spots reserved for conference champions and seven more going to the highest-ranked at-large teams.

Who gets those spots (and where they’re seeded) ultimately comes down to the College Football Playoff committee, a 13-member body. At the head of that body is the chair, and in 2024, Michigan athletics director Warde Manuel is serving in that position.

Manuel brings both playing and administrative experience to the table. A defensive tackle for the Wolverines from 1986-89, he was named athletics director at Michigan in 2016 after holding the same title at Connecticut and Buffalo.

Now entering his third season as a member of the committee after watching his school capture the trophy last year, Manuel was tabbed committee chair in February and will lead the group tasked with determining the teams that have a chance to compete for a national championship.

Sherrone Moore fired up Michigan basketball fans by pretending to plant a flag in the stands

Sherrone Moore understood the assignment.

Last week’s Michigan-Ohio State game ended with the Wolverines handing its archrivals a massive defeat in Columbus and a giant brawl on the field sparked by a planted Michigan flag.

Of course, Michigan coach Sherrone Moore knows the pride in Ann Arbor for the upset victory and the planted flag in Ohio Stadium.

The Wolverines coach gave the home fans what they wanted at Michigan’s Crisler Center during the men’s basketball game against Iowa on Saturday.

When he appeared on the arena’s jumbotron, Moore pretended to plant a flag, which got the Wolverines crowd going in a big way. How could it not?

Last week’s planted Michigan flag and Wolverines win will go down in Ohio State rivalry history, and Moore will be the coach who made it happen.

Andrew Olesh flips to Penn State from Michigan football

Huge bummer. #GoBlue

Michigan football pulled something of a coup by getting 2025 Central Valley (Pennsylvania) four-star tight end Andrew Olesh to commit relatively early in the cycle. But it had to continually fend off other schools.

Though Olesh appeared to want to go to Michigan, there appeared to be  outside pressure for him to end up at either Oregon or Penn State.

For a time, it appeared Olesh was going to stick with the Michigan class, but there were rumors surrounding him heading west to Oregon. Those rumors quieted when the Ducks were expected to get Linkon Cure to flip from Kansas State. However, on the opening day of the early signing period, Cure stuck with the Wildcats, and the Olesh rumors picked back up.

However, Olesh opted to go to Penn State instead.

Michigan football RB Cole Cabana enters transfer portal

The room is thinning. #GoBlue

The transfer portal opens on Monday and players across college football are announcing their intentions to find another school in advance of the weekend.

The Wolverines have already lost wide receivers Tyler Morris and Logan Forbes, running back Tavierre Dunlap, offensive linemen Raheem Anderson and Tristan Bounds, and punter Tommy Doman.

Now, you can add another skill position player to the list.

A sophomore this past season, big things were expected from Dexter (Michigan) four-star running back Cole Cabana. A versatile athlete, he was expected to play a role in the pass game as much as the run game. However, Cabana struggled with injuries in his two years and never saw the field.

On Friday, Cabana announced his intentions to enter the transfer portal.

Cabana has three years of eligibility remaining. Without him in the room, the Wolverines will rely upon Jordan Marshall, Ben Hall, Micah Ka’apana and incoming freshmen Donovan Johnson and Jasper Parker.

Michigan football P Tommy Doman enters transfer portal

Shocker. #GoBlue

It was an uneven year for one of Michigan football’s starting specialists.

Punter Tommy Doman, an in-state product from Orchard Lake (Mich.) St. Mary’s, was a two-year starter, but his senior season left much to be desired. Doman was excellent in 2023, but in 2024, he often struggled with short kicks and failing to flip field position.

It appears that Doman is now looking for a change of scenery, despite him having another year of eligibility. Per 247Sports reporter Matt Zenitz, Doman will look for other options as he is expected to enter the transfer portal when it opens up on Monday.

Doman may have had his struggles but he was excellent, not only in 2023, but also in the pivotal Ohio State game this past Saturday. As he had a year ago, Doman routinely flipped the field and put the Michigan defense in excellent position.

With Doman leaving, the Wolverines will likely turn to either a transfer or Hudson Hollenbeck, who transferred in last season.

Sherrone Moore sheds light on decision to change offensive coordinator

Let the fun begin! #GoBlue

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Michigan football has been making moves when it comes to retooling the team, and it started on the recruiting end with Sherrone Moore swinging for the fences and signing five-star quarterback Bryce Underwood. The Wolverines are expected to be quite active in the transfer portal, but one thing isn’t set at the moment. We don’t know who will oversee the offense in 2025.

As expected, Moore moved on from extant offensive coordinator Kirk Campbell. What wasn’t expected is Moore didn’t retain Campbell on staff in some capacity. On Wednesday, Moore shared some of his thought process and his decision to move the offense in a new direction.

“After the game, I took some time in here by myself and sat back and thought about where we are as an offense, where we are as a program, and what we need to do,” Moore said. “And just felt like it was the best move for us.”

We have our list of preferred candidates, but, certainly, there could be more to the list for Moore and company.

As for what he’s looking for? He doesn’t say. But with the timeline, despite the transfer portal opening up on Monday, Moore is in no hurry to find a replacement for Campbell, instead ensuring he makes the right pick instead of a hurried option.

“As far as the coordinator change, I’m going to take my time,” Moore said. “I’ll be in communication with our staff and players. Whether what that looks like and when that looks like, I’ve already started that process. I don’t have an exact timetable. I want to do it as soon as possible, but I want to be very thorough with it. So I’m taking my time day and night to do everything I can to get that process done. And then as far as other staff changes, we’ll see as we go.”

Recruiting Story

This was about as no-fuss, no-drama recruitment as there could be. Michigan was interested in Sanders. He considered Baylor and Oklahoma State, but pledged to the Wolverines over the summer.

Readiness Level

Could compete to be in the rotation in Year 1, but he is more likely going to need a year before he gets into the rotation due to the depth expected to be ahead of him.

  • Committed Aug. 10, 2024
  • Also plays basketball and runs track

Scouting report

The scouting report from 247Sports’ Gabe Brooks:

Unverified size, but looks tall and wiry on the hoof. Instinctive three-phase playmaker with a strong football pedigree as the son of a former all-conference corner who played on some great TCU late 2000s teams. Three-sport athlete with experience in basketball and track and field that shows in functional athleticism on the gridiron. Elevates in the open floor with above-the-rim finishing ability. Productive in all three phases, including two special teams TDs as a junior. Field-stretching vertical shot threat at receiver. Big-framed corner on D with potential to fit a framey boundary corner role quite well, though skill set and instincts also could fit over the top at safety. Not necessarily a top-end burner but plenty fast with unorthodox gait, but does not get caught from behind. Bona fide Power Four prospect in the secondary. Owns the developmental potential to become a difference maker in college with NFL Draft upside.
