As with most offensive linemen, not expected to be a factor in his first year but should compete for a starting job in year two or three.

Scouting report

The scouting report from 247Sports’ Allen Trieu:

High school offensive tackle who can be a swing guy at the next level. Tenacious, physical player who goes to the whistle and finishes plays. Shows functional strength and pad level in addition to the pure willingness to want to move defenders off the ball, all making for a dominant run blocker. Still technically coming along in pass set and pass pro. Physicality shows up in his punch there also. Left tackle in high school who may be more suited as a right side option or interior player at the high-major level. Has added good weight and strength and will continue to do so. Is a solid base-level athlete, but can also continue to improve on pure explosiveness and lateral agility. High-floor type prospect who will give a high-major school depth at several positions and should be a dependable multi-year starter at the Power Five level.

A note on 247Sports from his head coach:

“He’s an incredibly hard worker. He expects a lot of himself. His motivation is intrinsic, he’s goal-oriented and his goals at the beginning of the season, he strived for and got above those goals. The most positive things about him aren’t really the physical characteristics and schematics and all that coach talk. He’s a hard worker, coachable and is perfectionist. He’s just so long. His arms are super long. He plays with good pad level. He was a top tier wrestler last year as well, so that helped him out. There are huge benefits with that wrestling profile with a football player because wrestling teaches leverage.”

Michigan football gets a signing day commitment from rising DT

A late riser joins the class! #GoBlue

Michigan football started looking deeper into options at defensive tackle late in the cycle and one rising target made a late visit after the Wolverines’ regular season home finale.

2025 Louisville (Ky.) Fern Creek Traditional three-star defensive tackle Travis Moten may be a lower-rated recruit, but the Wolverines aren’t the only school that has had late interest. Given that Moten had 90 tackles, 30 tackles for loss, and 19.5 sacks his senior season, he’s risen up some recruiting boards in a hurry. At 6-foot-5, 250 pounds, Moten already has requisite size and could be a force in short order.

Formerly a Western Michigan commit, Moten committed to Michigan football on early signing day over Virginia and Texas Tech.

He was announced as signed by Michigan football.

Here is how he’s ranked according to the recruiting services:

With Moten in the fold, the Wolverines have a nice haul along the defensive line, including Nate Marshall, Benny Patterson, and Bobby Kanka.

Recruiting Story

Originally from Georgia, Johnson was on track to be the top running back in 2025 and perhaps reaching five-star status before he tore his ACL his junior year. He has since recovered, but other backs have passed him in the rankings. A member of the 247Sports ‘Freaks List,’ Johnson is both big and fast and fits Michigan football perfectly. He chose the Wolverines over offers from Alabama, Georgia, LSU, Ohio State, and others.

Readiness Level

Likely a year-two contributor due to the depth ahead of him.

Notes

  • Committed June 23, 2024
  • Tore his ACL in his junior season of high school
  • Once had a 247Sports rating of 0.9767, which had him as a high four-star

Scouting report

His scouting report per On3:

Physically-gifted running back with an elite size-speed combination. Measured at over 6-feet and around 200 pounds prior to his junior season. Registers as an elite athlete in the combine setting. Has a track background dating back to early high school, running in AAU national events. Began his career at Calvary Day in Savannah, Georgia prior to transferring to IMG Academy before his junior season. Has shown glimpses of his high-end athleticism on the field. A twitchy, explosive mover with tangible burst. Has the speed to pull away once in open space. Has the strength and size to break arm tackles. Shrugs off defenders. Has not played much meaningful football since transferring to IMG, adding ambiguity to his evaluation. Saw limited carries as a sophomore and has yet to play midway through his junior season. Will need to get back on the field to continue developing and add clarity to his evaluation.

Recruiting Story

There was little drama with Kanka committing to Michigan as he is the longest-tenured commit (others pledged before him but have since left the class) but there was a point where in-state rival MSU was sniffing around during spring ball and it appeared that the Howell native was taking the Spartans seriously. However, Michigan managed to retain him and he’s now officially in.

Readiness Level

Will likely take two-to-three years before he is ready to be a significant contributor.

Scouting report

The scouting report from 247Sports:

Comes from a positional background that includes tight end, defensive end and offensive line but the most likely projection for him in college is interior defensive line. Is built like a power guy and shows that as a blocker on offense and also in holding his ground as a defender, but has enough athletic ability to change direction and make plays that aren’t coming right at him. Plays with tenacity and has really good all around intangibles. There is room for adding explosiveness off the snap. We see him as a solid, good all around athlete who plays tough and will help a college team win. He could be a college offensive lineman but we see a starting caliber defensive tackle here.

Urban Meyer breaks down why Michigan football beat Ohio State

You know this killed him inside. #GoBlue

You know this killed him inside.

Former Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer has been working as an analyst for Fox Sports and Big Ten Network since leaving the Buckeyes following the 2018 season. Meyer went 7-0 against Michigan football in his tenure in Columbus but his handpicked successor, Ryan Day, is now 1-4.

Meyer met up with Gerry DiNardo to discuss why the Wolverines, as three-touchdown underdogs, were able to shock Ohio State en route to a stunning 13-10 road victory.

In ‘Urban Analysis,’ Meyer discusses the Michigan defensive line, how it set the edge and penetrated the OSU offensive line.

“Nine-of-the-26 of those runs went for zero or minus-yardage plays,” Meyer said. “This blew my mind when I saw this: the last 14 plays of The Game went for no first downs. That’s great run defense.”

Though Michigan fans don’t exactly have love for Meyer, they’ll certainly enjoy him breaking down the Wolverines embarrassing the Buckeyes in the biggest upset victory in the series.

Michigan football RB expected to enter transfer portal

Best of luck to him. #GoBlue

Silly season has officially begun, meaning there are about to be tons of flips and commits and incoming and outgoing transfers like we’ve never seen before. And certainly, Michigan football isn’t immune to bad news, despite the recent win over Ohio State.

The Wolverines already are losing their top receiver to the transfer portal as junior Tyler Morris has decided to finish off his career elsewhere. Now the maize and blue are losing a reserve running back.

Tavierre Dunlap came from the state of Texas to Ann Arbor in the 2021 season along with Donovan Edwards. But Dunlap never quite took ahold, with 22 carries for 138 yards in his career. This season, he posted a career low of one carry for 20 yards, but he also scored his first touchdown (vs. Northwestern). And according to 247Sports’ Matt Zenitz, he will finish out his career elsewhere, as he’s entering the transfer portal.

Dunlap preserved his redshirt in 2021 as he only appeared in two games. He’ll have one season of eligibility remaining.
