Sooners continue search for QB for 2024 class and extend offer to four-star Michael Van Buren

The Sooners extended an offer to 2024 QB Michael Van Buren from Baltimore, Maryland.

The Oklahoma Sooners made it known when Brent Venables was hired things were going to be different.

In many facets, that has undoubtedly been the case. When Venables hired Jeff Lebby as his offensive coordinator, Lebby made it known certain things will be done differently offensively as well. On the recruiting front, the Sooners would be recruiting a QB for every class which is a stark contrast from Lincoln Riley’s one QB every other year strategy.

With that said, coupled with the fact that five-star QB prospect Jackson Arnold is committed for the 2023 class, the Sooners are already on the hunt for their next signal caller as the 2024 class begins to come into focus. While hosting their OU camp, the Sooners brought in the likes of Michael Van Buren from Baltimore, Maryland. Van Buren is a four-star QB in the 2024 class and is a 247Sports Composite top 140 recruit.

The last Sooners QB from the DMV area currently plays for the USC Trojans, but Van Buren is a talented individual in his own right.

He can throw into tight windows, throw off platform and throw on the run as well. Although he was a part-time starter in 2021, Van Buren’s talent speaks for itself and he’s beginning to see his recruitment take off in a major way.

He’s a great prospect for Lebby’s offense and could be a major help on the recruiting trail for the Sooners along the East Coast as quarterbacks tend to have recruits gravitate towards them once committed.

Van Buren also boasts a connection to the current Sooner Jalil Farooq as Farooq graduated from St. France’s which is where Van Buren currently attends.

Van Buren has played the last few seasons for St. Francis Academy in Baltimore, M.D, and has accepted an invite to play in the Under Armor All-American game early next year. The four-star recruit is ranked as the No. 3 QB in Maryland and the No. 11 QB in the country in the class of 2024 by 247Sports.

The Baltimore native already holds offers from several power-five schools including Alabama, Michigan, Penn State and Maryland. Van Buren would be a huge commitment for Wisconsin to land, but the Badgers will definitely face an uphill battle.

Four-star quarterback Michael Van Buren on Rutgers and breaks down the programs after him the hardest

Michael Van Buren discusses his recruitment by Michigan, Alabama, Penn State, Clemson, Georgia and Rutgers among other top programs.

Michael Van Buren has emerged as one of the top quarterbacks in the nation in the class of 2024. And, not surprisingly, he has an offer list that features some of the biggest programs in college football.

A standout quarterback at St. Frances Academy (Baltimore, MD), Van Buren is being heavily recruited by a number of Power Five programs after a tremendous sophomore season. This week, he gave an update on his recruitment, talking about the programs that are currently after him the hardest while dropping the names of two powerhouses that could be closing in on offering this summer.

“Right now I’d say Penn State, Michigan, Alabama, Virginia Tech, Maryland and Rutgers,” Van Buren told RutgersWire in a phone interview this week when asked the programs after him the hardest.

Clemson is also showing interest right now. Georgia too…and a couple other big schools.”

Clemson and Georgia have yet to offer.

Van Buren is a four-star recruit according to Rivals. He is ranked as the eleventh best quarterback in the nation and the No. 149 recruit in the class of 2024.

Van Buren breaks down his recruitment, his relationship with the likes of Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh, Penn State head coach James Franklin, Alabama head coach Nick Saban, Rutgers head coach Greg Schiano as well as the slew of assistants, coordinators and offensive assistants involved in his recruitment. Streeter set to check out one of nation’s top-ranked QBs

The Clemson Insider has identified a new quarterback target for Clemson in the 2024 recruiting class. Clemson offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Bradon Streeter has begun to express interest in St. Frances Academy (Baltimore, MD.) four-star Michael Van Buren.

The rising junior currently ranks as the No. 10 quarterback and the nation’s No. 126 overall prospect in the class of 2024, per the 247Sports Composite rankings.

After speaking with Van Buren in a phone interview Tuesday, we can confirm that Streeter will be at St. Frances to watch the talented gunslinger throw during his team’s spring practice on Wednesday.

“I had a call with Coach Steerter the other day,” Van Buren said. “He was just getting to know me and I was just getting to know him. He was just telling me that he had a lot of interest in me. He told me he watched my film and really enjoyed it. He loves my natural movements, decisiveness and my quick release.”

“I think he’s a great coach,” he continued, “because of guys like (Deshaun) Waston and Trevor Lawrence developing under him. I think he really knows how to develop quarterbacks well.”

What does it mean for Van Buren to hear from a school like Clemson?

“It means a lot to be recruited by a big-time program like that with a lot of big-time quarterbacks that came out of the program,” he said. “Me being one of the guys they really show interest in or a guy they could see running their program just means a lot.”

Van Buren pinpointed schools like Penn State, Michigan, Virginia Tech and Alabama as the ones currently recruiting him the hardest at the moment. While he doesn’t have an offer from Clemson — no quarterback in the class of 2024 currently has one — it would certainly impact Van Buren’s recruitment.

“It would mean a lot,” he said regarding a potential offer. “A school like Clemson would definitely be high in my recruitment when it’s time to make a decision.”

While he’s not close to making a decision, Van Buren has already outlined some of the more important factors that he’s looking for in a school at the next level. He’s on the hunt for a program that prioritizes quarterback development, as well as a program that has a family environment and a stable culture.

Talking about Van Buren the player, he described himself as a thrower, who can run the ball when he has to. He can make every throw and he’s decisive at that.

For the most part, Van Buren’s sophomore campaign went decently well. He did, however, split time with a senior in John Griffith, who is now a freshman at the University of Maryland.

While Van Bruen didn’t get as many reps as he would’ve liked last season, he’s a team player first and foremost, and came in whenever his team needed him. He saw last year as a learning process, getting him ready for his time to lead a team, which will be this season.

Now, it’s his turn.
