4-star QB Michael Van Buren pushes up commitment date; Ducks remain favorites

4-star QB Michael Van Buren pushed his commitment up to this coming week. The Ducks are still the favorites to land him.

The Oregon Ducks are going to be finding out in a matter of days whether or not they can add one of the top passers in the 2024 class to their recruiting haul this spring.

On Sunday night, 4-star quarterback Michael Van Buren announced that he would be pushing up his commitment date to Saturday, May 20. Previously, Van Buren was scheduled to announce his commitment on July 8.

The Ducks remain the favorites to land Van Buren, who took a pair of visits to Eugene over the past month. After his visit for the Oregon spring game, a slew of predictions from 247Sports Crystal Ball came in showing that the Ducks were the favorites to land MVB.

Van Buren is rated by the 247Sports Composite as the No. 11 QB in the 2024 class, and No. 129 overall player. The Ducks already have a commitment from 3-star QB Luke Moga in the class of 2024, but there is a notion that they are willing and hoping to take a pair of quarterbacks in the cycle.

We will find out this coming weekend if that will be the case.

Breaking down QB Luke Moga’s commitment, and what it means for QB Michael Van Buren

QB Luke Moga committed to Oregon on Friday. Does that change anything for QB Michael Van Buren? Let’s talk it out.

Earlier this week, a bit of a twist was thrown into the Oregon Ducks quarterback recruiting world when four-star Michael Van Buren announced he would return to Eugene for the annual spring game on Saturday.

That announcement set a series of actions into motion, including a number of predictions for the Ducks to land Van Buren’s commitment, as well as a delayed commitment announcement from three-star Luke Moga, a player who was favored to choose Oregon.

Another surprise came for Duck fans on Friday morning when Moga went back to his original plan and committed to the Ducks.

With Moga committed to Oregon in the 2024 class, what does that mean for Van Buren? Is he still interested? Is he still visiting this weekend? There are questions to answer.

Return visits, delayed commitments raise intrigue around UO’s 2024 QB recruitment

4-star QB Michael Van Buren is returning to Oregon next week. 3-star QB Luke Moga is delaying his commitment. Those two things may be very connected.

There are some interesting developments that are taking place when it comes to quarterback recruiting at the University of Oregon.

Over the past couple of months, it has become clear that the Ducks are largely picking between a pair of quarterback recruits in the 2024 class; 3-star Luke Moga and 4-star Michael Van Buren. While there was some early buzz that they might be in the mix to land 5-star QB Dylan Raiola, that has cooled over the past month, and it appeared that one of the two aforementioned players was going to end up being Will Stein’s guy in the 2024 class.

A week ago, handicappers would have said that Moga was the likely option, with a prediction from 247Sports Steve Wiltfong for the rising passer to pick Oregon. However, some things may be changing as the cycle goes on.

On Sunday, Van Buren — who was in Eugene for a visit last weekend — announced that he would be coming back to Oregon for the spring game next weekend. Not long after, Moga announced that he would be delaying his official commitment, which was scheduled for April 28, the day before Oregon’s spring game.

It should also be noted that Moga was on campus with the Ducks this weekend.

So what does all of that mean? I’ve got a few thoughts.

4-star QB has Penn State in his final three schools

Penn State is in the top three for this four-star quarterback target.

Penn State’s 2024 class has been shooting up the national recruiting rankings in recent weeks after a slew of prospects committed to the program. They are ranked 7th in the 247Sports database and 10th in On3’s rankings.

While the quarterback position seems to be in good hands for the upcoming future with former five-star prospect [autotag]Drew Allar[/autotag] and three-star [autotag]Beau Pribula[/autotag] already in the program, that isn’t stopping [autotag]James Franklin[/autotag] from trying to add more talent.

[autotag]Michael Van Buren[/autotag] is a four-star quarterback from Maryland who has been one of Penn State’s top targets in the class of 2024. The 6’0″ 185 pound prospect is ranked as the 181st overall player in his class according to On3’s Industry Ranking. ESPN has him as their 18th best player in the 2024 class and the number two overall quarterback prospect.

Recently, Van Buren cut his list of schools down to three on Friday with Penn State included. The other two schools are Maryland and Oregon.

The four-star prospect received just over 30 scholarship offers from different schools before trimming his list down before his senior year of high school. Despite being from the state of Maryland, On3’s Recruiting Prediction Machine has Penn State as the overwhelming favorites to land Van Buren. The Nittany Lions are given a 94.6% chance to secure a commitment, while Maryland comes in second with 2.2%.

Van Buren spoke with Hayes Fawcett of On3 about State saying, “I have built a great relationship with the coaches at Penn State, mainly with Coach Franklin, Coach Yurcich, and Coach O’Brian. They make sure to communicate with me often even if it’s not about football just checking up on me and seeing how I’m doing.”

“They’ve shown a lot of love every time I made my way down to Happy Valley and the atmosphere in beaver stadium is insane! Everyone knows about Penn State’s rich tradition and they really put their players in the right position to succeed on and off the field,” he said.

It looks like Penn State is in a good spot to continue adding talent and depth at their quarterback position. Van Buren will reportedly announce his commitment this summer on July 8th.

4-star QB Michael Van Buren puts Ducks among top 3 schools

Michael Van Buren, the No. 11 QB in the 2024 class, is down to three schools in his recruitment.

The Oregon Ducks are officially in the thick of it to land 4-star quarterback Michael Van Buren.

Earlier this month, Van Buren announced that he would be making his commitment announcement on July 8, 2023, and he is fresh off of a visit to Eugene last weekend to check out the Ducks.

On Friday, Van Buren announced his final three schools that he will be deciding between: Oregon Ducks, Penn State Nittany Lions, and Maryland Terrapins.

Van Buren is rated by the 247Sports Composite as the No. 130 player in the 2024 class, and No. 11 QB in the class as well.

The Ducks currently have a top-10 2024 class in the nation, but they don’t have a QB committed as of yet. Adding Van Buren to the mix would be a big-time get for Dan Lanning, Will Stein, and the whole group.

4-star QB Michael Van Buren sets announcement date, will visit Oregon next week

4-star QB Michael Van Buren, a primary target for the Ducks, has reportedly set his commitment date. Van Buren will visit Eugene next weekend.

We now have a timeline for when one of the major recruiting pieces will be coming off of the board for the Oregon Ducks.

4-star quarterback Michael Van Buren, one of the primary targets for Dan Lanning and Co. during the 2024 class, will reportedly announce his college commitment on July 8 this summer, per 247Sports’ Brian Dohn. It is a long way out, but a notable date to put on the calendar, because it potentially could impact Oregon’s 2024 class in a significant way.

Van Buren is rated by 247Sports as the No. 128 overall player in the 2024 class, and the No. 11 QB. He has visited Oregon before, and will reportedly be in Eugene for another visit this coming weekend to take in Ducks practices and see the facilities once again while meeting with coaches.

In the world of recruiting, getting your quarterback committed early is often important, because it can help build out the rest of the class. Last year, 5-star QB Dante Moore announced his commitment to the Ducks on July 8, the same day that Van Buren plans to announce his commitment.

There are no current 247Sports Crystal Ball predictions for Van Buren, but Penn State is the leader to land him, according to the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine.

Each Quarterback and Running Back the Oklahoma Sooners have offered in the 2024 recruiting class

With the focus on 2023 this summer, let’s take a look at the quarterbacks and running backs the Oklahoma Sooners have offered in the 2024 recruiting cycle.

Oklahoma’s had a lot of success recruiting the quarterback and running back positions since in the school’s history. Though the style of player has changed from the dynastic eras of the Bud Wilkinson and Barry Switzer days, Bob Stoops and Lincoln Riley’s Oklahoma Sooners were able to attract some of the best skill players the country has had to offer.

Since the turn of the century, Oklahoma’s had some of the best offensive players the game has seen, as evidenced by their four Heisman trophies, several finalists, and highly productive rushing attacks.

And now with Jeff Lebby running the show, Oklahoma’s going to continue that run of highly skilled offensive players at the Palace on the Prairie.

The Sooners have a nice group of quarterbacks to work with over the next couple of years with [autotag]Dillon Gabriel[/autotag], [autotag]Nick Evers[/autotag], [autotag]Davis Beville[/autotag], and [autotag]General Booty[/autotag] on the 2022 roster and [autotag]Jackson Arnold[/autotag] coming in 2023.

At running back, Oklahoma is also looking really good with [autotag]Eric Gray[/autotag]. [autotag]Marcus Major[/autotag], [autotag]Jovantae Barnes[/autotag], and [autotag]Gavin Sawchuk[/autotag] on the depth chart for 2022 with four-start running back [autotag]Kalib Hicks[/autotag] to come in 2023.

While the Sooners continue their push for the 2023 recruiting class, let’s take a look ahead to see who they’re targeting in 2024.
