UFC 299 ceremonial weigh-ins faceoff video: Kevin Holland grabs Michael Page’s signature hand gesture

Michael Page officially brought his signature “Venum” to the UFC weigh-ins stage, but Kevin Holland hopes to slay the snake Saturday.

MIAMI – [autotag]Michael Page[/autotag] officially brought his signature “Venum” to the UFC weigh-ins stage, but [autotag]Kevin Holland[/autotag] hopes to slay the snake Saturday.

Ahead of their welterweight clash on Saturday’s UFC 299 main card at Kaseya Center, Page (21-2 MMA, 0-0 UFC) and Holland (25-10 MMA, 12-7 UFC) stared each other down during Friday’s ceremonial weigh-ins faceoff.

Page, 36, pulled out his signature hand gesture, to which Holland reached up and grabbed. Holland then offered a gesture of his own, firing a shot at Page as he posed for the crowd.

Michael Page brushes off Ian Machado Garry saying ‘no way’ he beats Kevin Holland at UFC 299

Michael Page brushes off Ian Machado Garry’s prediction for his UFC debut. “Happy to throw it back in your face when I knock him out.”

MIAMI – [autotag]Michael Page[/autotag] is brushing off [autotag]Ian Machado Garry[/autotag]’s prediction for his fight.

Page (21-2 MMA, 0-0 UFC) makes his promotional debut against Kevin Holland (25-10 MMA, 12-7 UFC) on Saturday at UFC 299 (pay-per-view, ESPNews, ESPN+) from Kaseya Center.

Rising welterweight contender Garry was asked his thoughts on “MVP” signing with the UFC, and the undefeated Irishman said he doesn’t like Page’s chances against Holland.

“There’s no f*cking way he beats Kevin Holland,” Garry said during UFC 298 media day last month. “So, no. There’s no way.”

When asked what he thinks of Garry dismissing him, Page saw it as a sign of intimidation.

“Everyone’s entitled to their opinions,” Page told MMA Junkie and other reporters at a pre-fight news conference Wednesday. “I don’t need to crush anybody for their opinion. He’s allowed to share his thoughts because he’s doing it at the top level now. I also think that’s a little bit of worry. I think that’s a little bit of, ‘I hope he gets crushed because it means I’m not in line for anything.’

“Because me winning means I’m potentially in line (for a title shot). You’re going to find a lot of people wishing for my downfall that are in the division, simply because they don’t want to cross me, and they know what that’s going to mean. That’s how I see it. I don’t need to tear him down for anything. Happy for your opinion, happy to take it on board and happy to throw it back in your face when I knock him out.”

Kevin Holland has no problem ‘catching a snake’ vs. Michael Page at UFC 299

Kevin Holland looks forward to the stylistic matchup vs. Michael Page.

MIAMI – [autotag]Kevin Holland[/autotag] looks forward to the stylistic matchup vs. [autotag]Michael Page[/autotag].

Holland (25-10 MMA, 12-7 UFC) welcomes Page (21-2 MMA, 0-0 UFC) to the octagon on Saturday’s UFC 299 (pay-per-view, ESPNews, ESPN+) main card at Kaseya Center in Miami.

A fan favorite, Holland says he hasn’t been heckled by the U.K. fans at all as he aims to spoil their countryman’s UFC debut.

“When I was fighting some of these other guys from different places, they tend to come pretty hard. But I’ve kind of got a good relationship with everybody, and no, they’ve been pretty nice,” Holland told MMA Junkie and other reporters at a pre-fight news conference Wednesday. “I think they know this boy’s been living in Texas for a long time and he shouldn’t have a problem catching a snake.”

Holland says he was well aware of longtime Bellator fighter Page, who dazzled fans with numerous highlight-reel knockouts in his time there.

“I was a fan of his before he signed,” Holland said. “But if I’m a fan of somebody, I don’t want to welcome them anywhere – unless it’s at my house … eat some barbecue or something like that. That sounds pretty good. I don’t know. I watched him before, yeah. I’m a fan of his work – yeah, definitely.”

From Bellator to UFC: Michael ‘Venom’ Page details how BKFC appearance tipped him off to interest

Michael Page explains how a BKFC fight led to the UFC over-showing its hand – and eventually signing him to a deal.

MIAMI – The UFC doesn’t often aggressively pursue Bellator stars in free agency. There have been cases however, from Eddie Alvarez to Michael Chandler and beyond. [autotag]Michael Page[/autotag] is among them.

Page (21-2 MMA, 0-0 UFC) debuts Saturday against Kevin Holland (25-10 MMA, 12-7 UFC) on the UFC 299 main card at Kaseya Center. MVP signed with the promotion in December following a 19-fight stint with Bellator.

Despite his promotional allegiance, Page always openly stated he’d one day fight in the UFC. After all, it’s the brand that sparked his interest long ago.

“It was my intention at the start,” Page told MMA Junkie and other reporters Wednesday at a pre-fight news conference. “It wasn’t something that I ever lost sight of. I was a typical fan before, so only knew UFC. I was the probably the guy who would ask you, ‘Do you do UFC?’ at the time. … I never lost sight of wanting to eventually come here at some point, just because it was my original goal.”

For nine years, Page built his brand in Bellator through his highlight reel knockouts and flashy fighting style. But he only became aware he had widespread market value when he took a one-off BKFC bout against Mike Perry in August 2020.

“Their first reach out, which was kind of a mistake on their part, because it kind of showed their interest,” Page said. “Basically when I did my bareknuckle fight and I announced that I did my bareknuckle fight, people started reaching out like, ‘Oh, is he a free agent?’ The UFC reached out like, ‘Is he a free agent?’ So we’re like, ‘Oh, somebody is interested, huh?’ So obviously that was them initiating it. It was like, ‘No, no, still with Bellator and got X amount of fights, but I’ve got this amount of time left and we can speak thereafter. The conversation just remained open. We just kind of started from there and it’s weird.”

[lawrence-related id=2721789,2721717]

Negotiations dragged on through 2023 after Page’s final Bellator fight in March of that year. Page weighed his options but ultimately decided on the promotion he first fell in love with as a fan. He thinks it was the right call.

“It’s been amazing, getting to know the team over here,” Page said. “The team over here is just so organized, so on point, so welcoming, so hospitable, so helpful. It really does feel like I’ve been signed to a football team, getting all the facilities. It’s just done at a top-tier level – so professional. Yeah, I’m excited, man. I’m happy to be here.

“… It’s a new experience, but I embrace new experiences. I always say I love being a student and learning new things. So that’s how I feel. It just feels like I’m experiencing new things. I’m just soaking it all in. Come Saturday, I get to release that, all that energy.”

For years, Page has heard the critics accuse him of not consistently fighting Bellator’s best opposition. Regardless, Page acknowledges he has no time to waste in the UFC, as he turns 37 in April.

“I don’t do things just to make up numbers,” Page said. “I’m here for the belt. I’m here to get the bling. Getting to the top is key, which is why I start with somebody of the likes of Kevin Holland. It needs to be that type of challenge. I don’t have that time to build myself up and I don’t need to. That was a conversation that I had with the UFC. They were equally in agreement of that and I think they showed their intentions of giving me Kevin Holland first. … (I predict) a big entertaining knockout and maybe another spectacular knockout, too, and then the belt.”
