Fourth-year Buff Michael Harrison emotional after CU’s first win: ‘Man, I might cry’

Now in his fourth year with the #cubuffs, Michael Harrison let it all out following Colorado’s first win

When Deion Sanders was named the new head coach of the Colorado Buffaloes football team, there was an unprecedented amount of roster turnover. One player who stayed was Michael Harrison, a walk-on who has emerged as a weapon in the new offense led by Sean Lewis.

He has become a quality tight end and has been pegged as a potential sleeper in the Pac-12, which is a huge step in the right direction. After the TCU victory on Saturday, Harrison grew emotional when discussing what this meant after he has been with the Buffs since 2020 (h/t Thee Pregame Show)

“Man, I might cry,” Harrison told ‘Thee Pregame Show.’ “I’ve been here for so long. It just feels so good to win. We work so hard, bro. I love this (expletive). I’m just so happy. I’m just so happy right now.”

The junior from California has been with the Buffs every step of the way. After a one-win season and the subsequent hiring of Coach Prime, the hard work paid off in a big way in Week 1.

Walk-on Michael Harrison impressing Sean Lewis early in fall camp

Sean Lewis confirmed that Michael Harrison has been making some noise at TE

The Colorado Buffaloes football team is looking much different than it did back in December. However, one player still on the roster is Michael Harrison. He was largely a special teams contributor in both 2021 and 2022.

However, with Deion Sanders and a new staff in town, the former wide receiver is figuring to make some noise at the tight end position, With some changes in the TEs room following Seydou Traore’s surprising departure,  the walk-on Harrison has been a pleasant surprise:

Here’s what new offensive coordinator Sean Lewis said about Harrison, per Adam Munsterteiger of BuffStampede:

“The transition of Mikey over to that room adds a little bit of athleticism and he’s been able to stress some vertical seams, which has been very exciting,” Lewis said. “He made a nice back-shoulder catch today, which was great.”

With Shedeur Sanders taking over at the quarterback position and a brand new group of offensive weapons, there could be some opportunity for Harrison to thrive at the tight end position. This should be one of the more interesting underlying developments to watch early on for the Buffs.

Back in July, Colorado TEs coach Tim Brewster was also raving about Harrison, saying that he could be one of the better players at his position this season in the Pac-12.

Colorado coach says walk-on Michael Harrison could become one of the Pac-12’s best TEs

Tim Brewster said that #cubuffs walk-on Michael Harrison could become one of the Pac-12’s best tight ends

We’ve got another lesser-known player in the mix to start at TE for the Buffs next season.

Appearing on The Sports Forum Radio Show on July 6, Colorado TEs coach Tim Brewster said that walk-on Michael Harrison, who joined the Buffs in 2020 as a walk-on wide receiver, could become one of Pac-12’s best tight ends.

“6-3, 225 (pounds), 4.5-ish (40-yard dash), got crazy ball skills. He’s got an element of toughness,” Brewster said on The Sports Forum. “I really feel good about our ability to come together and make this guy one of the top TEs in the Pac-12 next season. I really believe that.”

Harrison redshirted during that COVID-shortened 2020 season but played in all 12 games on special teams in 2021, recording four special teams points. Last season, he hauled in two passes for 12 yards.

The San Francisco product also scored a touchdown in April’s spring game.

Brewster’s comments about Harrison change everything for me with how I look at Colorado’s TE room. Before this, it was Louis Passarello, Elijah Yelverton and Caleb Fauria in my top three, but you now have to consider Harrison a candidate to start in 2023.
