Where former Oklahoma Sooners landed after entering the transfer portal

Where did former Oklahoma Sooners end up after entering the transfer portal?

The Oklahoma Sooners have been working to remake the roster in the image of Brent Venables and his new defensive assistants. With the success they’ve had in the 2022 and 2023 recruiting classes, some transfer portal turnover was to be expected.

The transfer haul in the 2022-2023 portal cycle provided more talent and depth on the roster as the Sooners head into their final year in the Big 12. As 2022 showed, the talent on the roster simply wasn’t good enough to win close games in Big 12 play.

So Venables and his staff attacked the transfer portal to add a wealth of talent, particularly on the defensive side of the ball.

We know who the arrivals are in the transfer portal. Dasan McCullough, Walter Rouse, Rondell Bothroyd and Reggie Pearson will be significant contributors for the Oklahoma Sooners in 2023.

Oklahoma lost a few talented players in the portal, but mostly guys that were having a hard time breaking into the rotation under Venables. Here’s who departed in the portal and where they landed:

Sooners QB Micah Bowens enters transfer portal

Oklahoma reserve QB Micah Bowens enters the transfer portal.

Even while the spring semester is just getting fully revved up, the Oklahoma Sooners continue to see more roster turnover. Tuesday saw the Sooners lose yet another reserve player to the portal. QB Micah Bowens entered his name into the portal and will seek a different opportunity elsewhere.

Bowens transferred to Oklahoma from Penn State two years ago after redshirting as a Nittany Lion. He officially has three years of eligibility remaining and is a graduate transfer.

Bowens showcased his mobility and his dual-threat skills in the Sooners’ last two Red/White Games. In the 2021 game, he completed 4-of-5 passes for 26 yards and rushed three times for 25 yards. In the 2022 game, he completed one pass but it turned into a 95-yard touchdown to true freshmen Jayden Gibson. Bowens never saw the field in any meaningful action despite Oklahoma’s desperation for QB answers when starter Dillon Gabriel went down with a concussion in 2022.

They ran a wildcat variant against Texas but chose not to use the most elusive QB on the roster. With him being a west coast kid who grew up in Las Vegas, it’s possible Bowens heads closer to home to try and find a school that will utilize his skills a bit more than Oklahoma did.

Oklahoma Sooners add JUCO transfer QB General Booty

The Oklahoma Sooners added another quarterback to its ranks after getting a commitment from JUCO transfer General Booty.

The Oklahoma Sooners aren’t slowing down in the talent acquisition department as they prepare for the 2022 season. After getting a commitment from Pittsburgh transfer quarterback [autotag]Davis Beville[/autotag] earlier in the week, the Sooners landed another quarterback in the transfer portal, this time JUCO transfer General Booty.

Booty played one season for Tyler Junior College and threw for 3,115 yards, 25 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions. The former Allen Eagle was second in the junior college ranks in passing yards per game and fourth in passing touchdowns for Tyler, who went 7-5 in 2021 and finished second in the Southwest Junior College Football Conference.

Adding Booty to the ranks gives Jeff Lebby seven quarterbacks as they head into the summer. [autotag]Dillon Gabriel[/autotag] is the unquestioned starter and Davis Beville is the presumptive favorite to win the backup quarterback job. Then Oklahoma has true freshman [autotag]Nick Evers[/autotag], [autotag]General Booty[/autotag], [autotag]Micah Bowens[/autotag], [autotag]Ben Harris[/autotag], and [autotag]Ralph Rucker[/autotag].

2022 Spring Preview: Dillon Gabriel steps in as the unquestioned starter for the Oklahoma Sooners

What does the quarterback position look like for the Oklahoma Sooners as they get set to start spring practice?

As spring practices for Oklahoma get underway on March 22, it’s time to begin taking stock of what the Sooners have on campus in each respective position group. Here at the Sooners Wire, we’ll give you a breakdown of what to watch for as Oklahoma begins preparations for the 2022 season.

Yesterday, Josh Helmer took a look at a wide receiver group that lost several of their top pass catchers but looks to be in great shape anyway. Today, we’ll take a look at the position throwing them the football, the quarterback.

No position group has seen as much upheaval in the last few months as the quarterback group. After a benching and a coaching change in the last eight months, Oklahoma was well connected in the transfer portal and despite its losses at the position, remain in fantastic shape at quarterback.

What is Oklahoma getting with Penn State transfer Micah Bowens?

The Oklahoma Sooners added to the quarterback room through the transfer portal with Micah Bowens of Penn State.

The Sooners added depth to the quarterback room with dual-threat Penn State transfer Micah Bowens II. After parting ways with both Tanner Mordecai (SMU) and Chandler Morris (TCU) via the transfer portal, Lincoln Riley found what he was looking for.

Oklahoma had only two scholarship QBs on the 2021 roster with incumbent starter Spencer Rattler and five-star signee Caleb Williams. With Bowens, the positional need was addressed.

Bowens was a three-star recruit from Bishop Gorman- the same high school that running backs coach DeMarco Murray attended. He was a top prospect in Nevada but did not play a single snap for Penn State in 2020 as a true freshman or appear on the Nittany Lions’ official depth chart.

Bowens was a two-year starter at Bishop Gorman and accumulated impressive numbers at the top high school program in Nevada. His junior and senior year at Bishop Gorman he combined for 4,918 passing yards, 1,416 rushing yards, and 80 touchdowns.

Vitals

Hometown Las Vegas, NV (Bishop Gorman)
Projected Position QB
Height 6-0
Weight 195

Scouting Report:

Micah Bowens didn’t get a chance to show what he can do in his short time at Penn State, but he arrived on campus with a strong arm made for throwing the ball deep down the field. And he has the ability to be mobile in a way that suited him well for what Penn State ideally likes to do with its offense with guys like Trace McSorley and Sean Clifford. Bowens has plenty of room for development, and surely Lincoln Riley can help him out in a big way. The tools and mechanics are there. How soon he gets a chance is the question. Moving from Penn State to Oklahoma wasn’t a move to get more playing time right away, but moving to Oklahoma may give him more of a chance to flourish. – Kevin McGuire (USA TODAY Sports)

Oklahoma lands QB transfer Micah Bowens from Penn State

After picking up Wanya Morris from Tennessee on Monday, OU adds former three-star quarterback Micah Bowens from Penn State on Tuesday.

Oklahoma is now two-for-two on the transfer portal path the past two days. After picking up former five-star offensive tackle Wanya Morris from Tennessee on Monday, the Sooners add former three-star quarterback Micah Bowens II from Penn State on Tuesday.

Bowens fills a much-needed depth role at the quarterback position with the departures of both Chandler Morris and Tanner Mordecai following the conclusion of 2020.

Even with the addition of Caleb Williams out of high school, the Sooners were looking at only two scholarship quarterbacks for 2021. Bowens’ commitment brings that total to three, and ensures that the Sooners have a legitimate backup ready just in case.

Bowens appeared in zero games during his true freshman season at Penn State, but still spent meaningful time working under head coach James Franklin. Even with no in-game experience in college, Bowens still has significantly more experience at this level than Williams, who will be a true freshman.
