Notre Dame is trying to keep its slim hopes to make the NCAA tournament as an at-large team alive for as long as possible. That almost certainly means winning out for the rest of the regular season, a strong showing in the ACC tournament and then a little love from the selection committee. But it only can take one step at a time, and the latest came in Sunday’s 87-71 win over Miami.

A John Mooney dunk off a Prentiss Hubb steal with less than eight minutes left in the first half gave the Irish (17-10, 8-8) a lead they wouldn’t relinquish. Notre Dame led by 19 at halftime, so even though the Hurricanes (14-13, 6-11) scored three more points in the second half, it wasn’t nearly enough to come back.

Mooney recorded his latest double-double of 19 points and 12 rebounds. Hubb also achieved a double-double of 15 points and 10 assists. T.J. Gibbs also scored 19, and Dane Goodwin had 14 off the bench.

Notre Dame has no room for error if it wants to pull off a surprise and receive an invite to March Madness. That will be a tall order without winning the ACC tournament, especially in a down year for the conference. The strive towards perfection the rest of the way begins Sunday against Miami. Not saying the chances of this scenario playing out are very good, but crazier things have happened.

After a thrilling last-second win over North Carolina, the Irish (16-10, 7-8) will look to build that momentum against the Hurricanes (14-12, 6-10), who have four of the programs’ past five meetings. Notre Dame has won only two of the seven matchups since the programs became ACC rivals.

The Irish on pace to lead their conference in fewest fouls committed for the ninth time in the past 10 times, but if the season ended today, their 12.5 fouls a game would be well ahead of the 13.1 average they accumulated during the 2017-18 season. In short, Mike Brey’s team has exceeded its reputation in one of the areas it has excelled in for the past decade.

Draymond Green has flagrant foul welcome plan for Andre Iguodala

The Warriors will welcome back Andre Iguodala to the Bay Area with the Heat, and Draymond Green has a special plan for his former teammate.

Andre Iguodala will make his first appearance in San Francisco’s Chase Center on Monday night, but instead of the home sideline — the former Golden State Warriors’ sixth man will be on the opposing bench for the first time in six years.

Iguodala has missed most of the NBA season as a member of the Memphis Grizzlies. However, now with the Miami Heat, he’s back on the court for game action.

Before the NBA trade deadline, Iguodala was moved from Memphis to Miami to come off the bench in Erik Spoelstra’s rotation. In the former Arizona Wildcat’s second game since the trade, he will suit up against his former teammates in the Bay Area.

Instead of a warm welcome back to his former home, Draymond Green has something different in store for the 2015 NBA Finals Most Valuable Player.

I’m going to flagrant foul him — flagrant two — as soon as I get a chance,

Reporters at the Warriors’ morning shootaround reminded Green that a flagrant two would trigger an ejection.

It would be worth it — I get to talk about that for the rest of my life with him, so it would be worth it.

Iguodala and Green formed one of the best defensive tandems for six seasons in Golden State, winning three NBA titles. Although the two shared championship memories, How Green handles Iguodala as an opponent will be something to watch.

Teddy Bridgewater reflects on his relationship with South Florida football

New Orleans Saints QB Teddy Bridgewater spoke about his relationship with high school football in Liberty City, his old Miami neighborhood.

[jwplayer qnZvfmkx-ThvAeFxT]

The love that New Orleans Saints quarterback Teddy Bridgewater has for his old hometown is almost famous. He’s a big advocate for high school football, often returning for games when the schedule allows. He discussed his affinity for Liberty City — the Miami neighborhood he hails from, along with other NFL stars like Chad “Ochocinco” Johnson and Indianapolis Colts wideout T.Y. Hilton, whose father is a legendary coach in the community — with Mina Kimes on the ESPN Daily podcast. Liberty City is a hotbed of football talent and recruiting, often playing host to big-time college recruiters like Alabama coach Nick Saban.

“I come back every chance I get,” Bridgewater said. “Every chance I get. With the schedule that we had in New Orleans, I was able to come home on Sundays after games, and just ride through the community and let them see me like, ‘This guy was playing football on Sunday and he’s back here the Monday after that, visiting high schools and things like that.'”

While some of Bridgewater’s antics have leaned closer to goofiness, like his temporary stint on his high school’s dance team, Bridgewater has also done what he can to support the community with school supplies giveaways and footing the dinner bill for the football team — players, coaches, and support staff included. From his perspective, these actions do a lot to bridge the gap between the current and future generations of Liberty City talent.

Bridgewater continued, “I just want to show everyone that I’m just like them still. I still get the same 24 hours you get, and I still bleed just the way you do. So I try to let them know that I’m still the same guy. That’s why I come back, because in those same neighborhoods there’s the next Teddy Bridgewater, there’s the next Amari Cooper, and the next Duke Johnson. And they need to see us in the flesh. And as long as they’re able to see that we’re able to be touched, we’re within arm’s reach, it makes a difference in our lives, and it makes a difference in their lives.”

These words and actions make Bridgewater’s character easy to measure. His skills on the football field, having gone 5-0 as a starter with the Saints in 2019, speaks for itself. Hopefully the Saints can work out a contract extension with the pending free agent, but it won’t be easy.

Former Ravens S Ed Reed new University of Miami ‘Chief of Staff’

Former Baltimore Ravens and University of Miami safety will be returning to his alma mater as their new “Chief of staff” under Manny Diaz

Former Baltimore Ravens legend and Hall of Fame safety is returning to his alma mater. The University of Miami has hired Reed to be their “Chief of Staff” and will be an adviser in all matters to coach Manny Diaz, according to the team’s website.

“We are thrilled to welcome Ed back to Coral Gables,” Diaz said. “He is not only one of the most decorated players in Miami football history but also a devoted Cane who cares deeply about this program. All of our players, coaches and staff will be fortunate to tap into his experience, knowledge and passion on a regular basis.”

Reed played safety for the Hurricanes and was a first-team All American in 2000 and 2001 before being selected by Baltimore in the first round of the 2002 NFL draft. He continued that impressive legacy with the Ravens, going to the Pro Bowl in nine of his 11 seasons with the team. Reed was quickly named to the Pro Football Hall of Fame on his first year of eligibility, getting a consensus vote after just two minutes of deliberation.

Reed has said he wanted to get back into coaching and this will seemingly give him an opportunity to do a little bit of everything. He previously held a position as an assistant defensive backs coach with former Ravens defensive coordinator Rex Ryan when he was the head coach of the Buffalo Bills, but was relieved of duty when Ryan was fired.

News: Jay Glazer says he helped talked Cowboys out of defensive HC hire

The Joneses were about to go a whole different direction before… Jay Glazer? Jason Witten talks Kobe… how to catch the 49ers.

It’s Super Bowl week which means plenty of people in the media will be chatting about all 32 NFL teams including the two playing in Sundays’ big game. Radio row has been buzzing just three days into one of the most popular sports media weeks of the year. NFL.com gives one piece of advice to each NFC team as to how to take down the San Francisco 49ers.

ESPN took a look at every team and named one player per squad who leveled up. Jason Witten shared a story on the late, great Kobe Bryant. Jimmy Johnson gives his reasoning as to why the Cowboys didn’t reach their goals in 2019. Fox‘s Jay Glazer dishes that he helped the Cowboys move away from a defensive search for a coach and shares great insight on Mike McCarthy. Here’s the news and notes.

One thing each NFC team can do to dethrone the 49ers in 2020 :: NFL.com

For the 30 clubs not prepping to play on Sunday, the rebuilding has already begun, with an eye on being their conference representative in Tampa on February 7, 2021. NFL writer Gregg Rosenthal takes a look at what each squad needs most critically to increase their odds; he says the Cowboys need to focus on their defensive line.

With Robert Quinn, Michael Bennett, Maliek Collins, Kerry Hyder, and Christian Covington all set to become free agents (and Tyrone Crawford no lock to return), there’s major work to do to improve this unit that “got pushed around in the running game too often last year.”

Players who leveled up for all 32 NFL teams in the 2019 season :: ESPN

The Cowboys as a group didn’t improve from 2018 to 2019, finishing with a worse record and missing the playoffs. But there were individual strides made by several players in upping their game.

In Dallas, nobody made more of a leap than Michael Gallup. The second-year wideout broke 1,100 yards on the season and combined with Amari Cooper to provide the team with their first 1,000-yard tandem since 2006. The truly exciting part for Cowboys fans? There are areas where Gallup can get even better in 2020.

Jason Witten shares Kobe Bryant story :: @realjasonwitten82 (Instagram)

Personal stories continue to spread from athletes, celebrities, and regular Joes about Lakers legend Kobe Bryant in the wake of his untimely passing. One you may have missed is from future Hall of Famer Jason Witten.

The Dallas tight end touchingly recalls how he met Bryant shortly after his 2018 retirement from football, and how all the basketball icon wanted to do was break down the nuts and bolts of Witten’s signature play, Y-Option.

View this post on Instagram

May 2018, a few weeks after my retirement speech, I see Kobe in NYC. He had seen the tape, and was instantly fascinated by the intricacies of the Y-Option Route. For next 30 minutes, we pull up the clip, and he asks question after question of the technique, the strategy, the mindset of every variation of the route, and how the defense would try and stop it. I told him how I had adopted a mantra of his over the years—you can’t cheat the muse— as a way to stay disciplined. Those mornings when you didn’t want to wake up, or get in the extra balls after practice. If my son wasn’t putting in the effort for a test at school I would tell him. You can’t cheat the muse. You can’t. And everything Kobe did in life, he set the standard. Kobe Bryant knew that the path to success in anything in life is not easy, and not for everyone. You might be able to slide by a day at practice, and get away with it. But, the muse would know. The muse always knows. As a father, and as a competitor. Few weeks later, I get a note from Kobe: I’m excited for the world to learn from you. Be in touch. KB I’ll never forget you Kobe, what a damn life. You never cheated the muse, and we are all better off because of your standard of excellence. RIP

A post shared by Jason Witten (@realjasonwitten82) on

Bryant’s “You can’t cheat the muse” sounds like a close relative to Witten’s “The secret’s in the dirt.” It’s little wonder that the two hit it off.

Jimmy Johnson said 2019 Dallas Cowboys didn’t have the inner drive to succeed :: Forth Worth Star Telegram

A lot of people will have voiced their opinions on what they thought about the 2019 Dallas Cowboys season over the coming weeks.  Some critique will be taken seriously and hold credibility and some not so much. However, when it comes to credibility, who better to ask about this year’s (8-8) season than former two-time Super Bowl winning head coach of the Cowboys, and new NFL Hall of Fame inductee, Jimmy Johnson.

Clarence Hill was able to ask Johnson his thoughts on the 2019 campaign. “I don’t know why it didn’t go better. I’ve watched them play a lot of times and they looked as good as anyone in the league, and they are very talented” Johnson started to explain.

Johnson continued to express that when the Cowboys faced adversity, that they would fall a little flat.

What stands out most about Mike McCarthy’s new offensive coaching staff ::: The Athletic

Jon Machota breaks down the brand new, revamped offensive coaching staff. Machota had the chance to speak with second-year offensive coordinator Kellen Moore, offensive line coach Joe Philbin and new wide receivers coach Adam Henry.

The 2019 offense lead the entire NFL by averaging 431.5 yards per game along with being sixth in scoring at 27 points per. New head coach Mike McCarthy was fairly confident in riding that momentum heading into 2020.

Each of these coaches have a relatively young group of players to work with and it will be determined who else will join this offense from a personnel standpoint via free agency and the 2020 NFL Draft.

You absolutely have to hear this story about Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy ::: Blogging The Boys

RJ Ochoa  sat down with Fox’s Jay Glazer on Wednesday in Miami as part of “Radio Row” for Super Bowl week.

Glazer was the one who broke both the Cowboys were moving on from Jason Garrett and replacing him with Mike McCarthy.

“Originally the Cowboys owners wanted a defensive coach because they wanted to keep the offensive staff. I’m like, don’t do that guys. And I talk to the Joneses about it. I said don’t do that. You get yourself in trouble that way. Get a leader of men. Get a guy who’s going to formulate the attitude of your team. This is who you want,” Glazer told Ochoa.

Glazer also retells a phenomenal story about who McCarthy is as a person.

2020 Super Bowl Prop Betting: Conquer Deebo Samuel receiving props

Looking at prop bets centered around San Francisco 49ers WR Deebo Samuel’s receptions and receiving yards in the 2020 Super Bowl.

[jwplayer 2XgmjwzG]

There is no juicier sporting event to bet on than the 2020 Super Bowl. Aside from picking the San Francisco 49ers or Kansas City Chiefs to win, a sharp can win money via player prop betting. Let’s analyze, and pick, BetMGM‘s Super Bowl prop betting odds and lines for 49ers WR Deebo Samuel’s receptions and receiving yards projections.

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated Wednesday at 7:45 p.m. ET.

Deebo Samuel’s 2020 Super Bowl receptions: 4.5

Don’t sleep on the Chiefs pass defense. They have given up the fewest catches and receiving yards to wide receivers this season. Kansas City has allowed the eighth-fewest passing yards and, according to Football Outsiders, the Chiefs have the sixth-best pass defense by their DVOA metric.

The biggest thing keeping Samuel away from going Over on his receptions props could be the 49ers themselves. Positive game script for San Francisco is them bludgeoning the Chiefs defense with the run. Plus, the 49ers’ most dynamic pass-catcher is TE George Kittle. Acquiring WR Emmanuel Sanders at the trade deadline before Week 8 added yet another option for QB Jimmy Garoppolo. In the 15 games in which Samuel has played this season, he has caught five or more balls in only five games. His 68.9% catch rate ranks 68th in the NFL but Samuel’s 5.29 targets per game ranks 85th.

BetMGM has factored in these things before making their line, hence the Under 4.5 catches is juiced to -143. The math says this prop goes Under so swallow the vig and BET DEEBO SAMUEL UNDER 4.5 CATCHES (-143).

Deebo Samuel’s Super Bowl LIV receiving yards: 56.5

(Photo credit: Kyle Terada – USA TODAY Sports)

It’s almost guaranteed head coaches Kyle Shanahan and Andy Reid will dial-up exquisite shot plays. They’ve been doing it all year. Both have the play design and personnel to throw the kitchen sink at each other.

The Chiefs’ secondary has played well all season long but their best player is All-Pro safety Tyrann Mathieu, and it makes sense if his main assignments are Kittle and the 49ers’ vaunted ground game. San Francisco is tied with the New England Patriots for the fourth-most pass plays of 20-plus yards, and Samuel had 18 of those in his 15 regular season and postseason games played. So, between the 49ers’ powerful rushing attack and the explosive Kittle, expect Garoppolo to take some shots downfield against one-on-one coverage to his wideouts. BET DEEBO SAMUEL OVER 56.5 RECEIVING YARDS (+100).

Jo Jo Diaz: ‘I can’t wait to shut this guy (Tevin Farmer) up’

Jo Jo Diaz has suggested that Tevin Farmer is looking past him and will make him pay on Thursday.

Tevin Farmer is looking to make a move, up the scale from junior lightweight to lightweight. Jo Jo Diaz might have another description for what Farmer is doing.

Looking up can sometimes mean looking past an immediate challenge.

That challenge is Diaz, who promises to make Farmer pay in a 130-pound bout for Farmer’s title Thursday on DAZN, a boxing preliminary before the Kansas City Chiefs-San Francisco 49ers Super Bowl in Miami this weekend.

“I can’t wait to shut this guy up,” Diaz (30-1 15 KOs) said in a conference call.

Lots of talk has been exchanged in the weeks before the fight at Meridian at Island Gardens was announced.

Diaz, Farmer says, is a tough fighter, yet he also says he would be “a good name on my resume.’’ It’s almost as if Farmer is applying for a job, a new role as a lightweight contender.

“After I win, I think I have one or two more fights at 130 pounds and then I’ll move up, especially if the big fights don’t happen,” said Farmer (30-4-1 6 KOs), who will make a fifth defense of a belt he won with a unanimous decision over Billy Dibb in August 2018 in Australia. “It’s not frustrating. I want the unification fights and I want to be undisputed. But as long as I am still fighting and feeding my family, I am OK with that.’’

Meanwhile, Farmer suggests that a fighter without a plan is just a fool without a future. He says he doesn’t overlook anybody.

“Talk about overlooking people is overused as you have to plan for the future, but it’s my future and I won’t let any other fighter determine my career,’’ said Farmer, a 29-year-old fighter from Philadelphia. “You don’t want to fight me, we move on. I will make my legacy with what I do and who I fight.

“I don’t care what anyone else does. It’s all down to me.’’

Diaz promises to do plenty.

“Trust me, I have got everything to capitalize and land the shots to hurt him, slow him down and land devastating shots,’’ said Diaz, who lost a decision to featherweight champ Gary Russell Jr. in his only other world title bid in May 2018.  “I don’t see it going 12 rounds. I think I will hurt him and make him feel my shots.

“I’m happy and ready to go 12 rounds with him, though. I’m not going to go in swinging for the fence. That’s what he wants. I’ll fight a smart fight.”

9 Do’s and don’t’s for attending a Super Bowl

Fans from around the country are heading to Miami to go watch the biggest game of the year. Sure, most of them are getting a break from the Kansas City Winter or coming in from San Francisco and messing up their internal clock, but the Super Bowl is a game that anyone can go to. Fine. . . that’s not true either. Tickets are expensive or tough to get. The NFL makes the Super Bowl it’s own professional sports convention and a lot of tickets are given to sponsors, business partners, or former players. That means that normal fans are dropping a pretty penny to get tickets on the secondary market. The cheapest price for a ticket on StubHub is over $4,500. So if you’re dropping almost $5K, here’s some advice for attending the Super Bowl from someone who has attended the last four years — sweet humblebrag.
