Former Michigan State football defensive back signs to Seattle Seahawks practice squad

A former MSU safety, now a linebacker, has signed with the Seahawks’ practice squad

A former Michigan State football player has found a new home in the NFL. On Wednesday, the Seattle Seahawks announced that they have signed linebacker Michael Dowell to the practice squad.

Dowell, who also had brother Andrew and David on the MSU team, was a safety in college but has since converted to linebacker at the next level.

Dowell spent three years with Michigan State before transferring to Miami of Ohio for two seasons. He signed with the Bengals this spring as an undrafted free agent before being cut, but now finds a nice landing spot in the NFL.

The Seattle Seahawks have made a roster move with their practice squad. On Wednesday, it was announced the team had signed linebacker Michael Dowell, who was previously with the Cincinnati Bengals.

Dowell went undrafted this year and signed with the Bengals as a safety. In college, Dowell was primarily a defensive back. He spent the first three years of his collegiate career with the Michigan State Spartans, before transferring to Miami of Ohio for his final two seasons.

During his time in college, Dowell recorded 239 total tackles (12 of which were for a loss), defended 16 passes, snagged two interceptions, and logged two sacks as well. Interestingly, Seattle is signing Dowell to be a linebacker for them. Makes sense, considering how much the linebacker position has been a weak point for the Seahawks overall this season.

Unfortunately, when a new person comes to the practice squad, it often means someone has to go. This time, it is linebacker Jamie Sheriff who drew the short straw. Sheriff made a name for himself in the preseason, especially in the finale against the Browns where he recorded two sacks.

Former Michigan State football WR enters transfer portal for a fourth time

Former Michigan State wide receiver enters the transfer portal for a fourth time

It doesn’t seem like things have gone according to plan for former Michigan State football wide receiver Tre’Von Morgan. Morgan spent two seasons with MSU before transferring to Kentucky. After just one season, Morgan transferred to Miami of Ohio back in January of this year. Now, he will enter the transfer portal for a fourth time to find a new home.

Morgan showed some promise at MSU with his impressive size, particularly in a memorable match-up against Penn State, but he wasn’t able to get on the field at Kentucky due to injury. It’s unclear if those issues are related to him deciding to leave Miami of Ohio after just a few short months, but it will be interesting to see where he goes next as he does fit the mold of a dynamic touchdown threat.

Miami of Ohio coaches must have been watching a lot of older Michigan State football film recently. On the same day where former MSU wide receiver Tre’Von Morgan officially transferred to Miami of Ohio, his former teammate, safety Michael Dowell, will follow suit.

Dowell was originally slated to join Pittsburgh, but will instead head to Ohio with his former teammate.

Here’s what happened the last time Ben Roethlisberger played a Wednesday game

Today’s Steelers-Ravens tilt won’t be the first Wednesday Big Ben has competed in a game.

Wednesday football. It’s a rarity, folks. You’d have to go all the way back to Week 1, 2012, to find the last Wednesday NFL game — Dallas Cowboys-New York Giants was rescheduled to accommodate the Democratic National Convention.

When Ben Roethlisberger takes the field at 3:40 this afternoon, it won’t be his first Wednesday showdown.

On Nov. 12, 2003, on the arm of future Pittsburgh Steeler Ben Roethlisberger, Miami of Ohio annihilated MAC-East rival Marshall, 45-6.

The winds were whipping, and so were Roethlisberger’s spirals. Completing 18 of 29 passes on 282 yards and two scores amid bitter 50 mph winds, No. 7 led his RedHawks to their ninth-straight win. Miami’s win clinched the MAC East title and a berth in the conference’s championship game.

“I was trying not to get blown away a few times,” Roethlisberger told ESPN in a post-game interview. “I told the receivers it’s not going to be pretty, but I’ll get it there. If you can’t throw a spiral in this wind, you’re in trouble.”

2003 was Ben’s final season in a RedHawks uniform.

“They’ve got a great quarterback,” Marshall coach Bob Pruett said after the defeat. “He definitely should go in the first round (of the NFL draft) and come out — get him out of this league.”

And Pruett was right.

With the 11th pick in the 2004 NFL draft, the Pittsburgh Steelers selected Ben Roethlisberger, quarterback, Miami of Ohio.
