Zion Williamson is out of shape, they said (albeit in much harsher terms). Zion isn’t committed to the game. Zion isn’t committed to New Orleans. Zion is detached from his teammates. The physical recovery was hard enough. The negativity was suffocating. “I was in dark places at times,” Williamson says, “because I couldn’t play basketball. I could only do limited rehab things. And then just seeing how the world reacted? It took a lot. It did a lot on my spirit.”

More on this storyline

The toll grew so heavy that Williamson could hardly mask the strain. After a home game one night, as he walked out of the Smoothie King Center, he ran into Pelicans assistant coach Teresa Weatherspoon, a close friend and confidant. “Hey, are you O.K.?” she asked. “No,” Williamson replied, “I’m not.” “And when he said no, he just fell into my arms,” Weatherspoon says. A long conversation followed—part counseling session, part pep talk, unconditional support mixed with moments of tough love. And many tears shed along the way. -via Sports Illustrated / October 11, 2022
The what/where/when/how of Williamson’s recovery are topics he prefers to keep private, which also partially explains his two-month stays in Portland and Fort Lauderdale. “I don’t like people to know my next move,” he says. Nor does he want to reveal anything about his training, his diet, his weight, his sprint times or the skills he’s been quietly honing all these months off the radar. “I’m one of those people that I like to show you more than I tell you,” Williamson says. “Because I feel like when I tell, it doesn’t even feel humble at all. So,”—and here he claps for emphasis—“I have to show the world.” -via Sports Illustrated / October 11, 2022

Kerr said the decision was made out of an abundance of caution as the Warriors go through a condensed training camp. “Just feel more comfortable giving him a little more of a ramp up,” Kerr said ahead of the Warriors’ 96-87 win over the Washington Wizards on Friday. “He’s just not quite ready to play at this point just based on where, you know, we’re so early in camp. We just want to be safe and make sure he gets a good ramp up before he plays in games.”

John Wall keeps reminding us that even the steadiest among us sometimes need help too

John Wall is taking vulnerability to another level with his Player’s Tribune piece

The vulnerability John Wall has displayed over the last few years is to be commended.

The Clippers’ guard revealed to the world in a pretty matter-of-fact way that he’d contemplated suicide at one point or another over the last few years. He’d battled injury, been traded, lost his mom, and nearly lost a limb during that time, according to Wall’s most recent account of his struggles on The Player’s Tribune, in which he explained exactly why his brain took him to the deep, dark depths that it did.

In short, he felt he had nothing. Nobody was there for him. It’d gotten to the point where even the thought of his children losing their father wasn’t enough to convince him he needed to stick around.

“The one thing I always held on to, in the darkest times, was the thought of my boys — just the little things, like wanting to be around for their first day of school, or their first vacation. Or wanting them to see their dad play in an NBA game for real, and not just on some highlights from back in the day. Those thoughts held me down during a lot of hard nights. But if I’m being honest, even the thought of being a father wasn’t enough for me to get help. That’s how depression lies to you. That devil on your shoulder is whispering to you, ‘Well, maybe they’d be better off without you here.'”

That hurts to read. It would hurt to read if it were anyone, but it especially hurts reading this from John Wall.

To so many Wizards fans, Wall wasn’t just a basketball player. He was a hero. He was an idol. A community pillar. He lifted the Wizards up from basketball’s basement into relevance with his own two shoulders.

He gave so much of himself to the team, the franchise and the city. There were so many moments. Game 6. His game for Miyah. The Raptors sweep.

There were also the many turkey drives and backpack giveaways he’d put together for the community. He never hesitated to reach out and help people. He even paid people’s rent during the pandemic while he was on the way out.  So to know that this man who always seemed to be giving, giving, giving was pushed to the brink like that? Yeah, that hurts.

Thankfully, he’s still here. And it’s all because of six words, he said: “Yo! I need some f***ing help!”

That’s the message he sent a friend who then got him the help he needed. Those words are so important. And, at one point or another, we’ve all been there. Maybe not in a situation as dire, but we’ve been there.

Swallowing your pride is hard. Vulnerability is hard. But being open and honest about when you need help is essential, even for the strongest and most solid among us. Nobody is perfect. We all fall sometimes and we can’t get up. But, as Wall teaches us with this piece, being able to reach out to someone willing to lend a helping hand can literally save your life.

I’m grateful he did that and I’m grateful he’s finding the peace he needs through all the loss he’s endured. It sounds like he’s in a much better place and that’s what matters most.

The work isn’t done — it almost never is. The path back isn’t going to be an easy one. But, with help, he’ll get there. And we’ll be cheering him on every step of the way.

Here’s what Chiefs HC Andy Reid had to say about Willie Gay Jr.’s suspension

#Chiefs HC Andy Reid discussed Willie Gay Jr.’s suspension on Wednesday with comments on the timing of it and which player will get the first crack at replacing Gay Jr. on Sunday.

The Kansas City Chiefs will be without third-year LB Willie Gay Jr. for the next four games due to suspension.

Chiefs HC Andy Reid spoke to the media on Wednesday for the first time since Gay Jr.’s suspension was announced by the league. He provided some insight into the timing of the decision on the suspension, explaining that the team had some advance notice that it was coming.

“So, they went through Brett (Veach),” Reid said. “Probably a better question for Brett. Not sure what we can and can’t say about that. I’ll probably leave it at that. We had an idea, we had a heads up on it.”

The team was aware after Gay Jr.’s off-field incident from last January was resolved that he would be subject to the league’s personal conduct policy. Reid said they expected something would happen and they did their best to be ready now that it has.

“We had an idea something was going to happen,” Reid said. “So we tried to prepare for it as best we can in case it did.”

The team has five linebackers on the 53-man roster and another on the practice squad, so they’re certainly not hurting for depth at the position.

One big concern with this entire situation is Gay Jr.’s mental health. He’s been open with his mental health struggles since last October and recently opened up to media members about the premature birth of his son.

Ensuring that Gay Jr. is in a good place mentally in light of his suspension is a priority for the Chiefs. Reid feels they have a proper support system in place to help him through it while he’s away from the team.

“The league is very sensitive to issues off the field,” Reid said. “They’re also sensitive to the mental health part of it. Willie and I had a nice visit. You know we’ve got doctor (Shaun Tyrance VP of Player Services and Assessment) here. Doctor T has talked to him. The position coaches talked to him. Brett (Veach) talked to him. So, he seems to be in a good place right now. He loves to play the game. It’ll be a long four weeks for him, but he’s allowed to come back here after two weeks. He’s in as good of a place as he can be. We’ll be in touch with him and stay in touch with him.”

As for replacing Gay Jr. on the field, Reid says that one veteran player will get the first crack at playing in his place.

“Darius Harris can fill in there,” Reid said. “We have people that can fill in, but Darius has a chance to step in there.”

Harris, an undrafted free agent out of Middle Tennessee, has been with the team since Steve Spagnuolo’s first season in 2019. Brett Veach tabbed him as a future starter, and for the next four weeks, he’ll get his chance.

“Well, he’s coming off of a good preseason,” Reid said of Harris. “He kind of knows everything. He’s a sharp kid. He’s tough and has a good concept of the defense. I think he’ll do a nice job. Physically, he’s (a) good size.”

A “good” preseason might be an understatement. Aligned as the MIKE linebacker in preseason Week 3, Harris had a three-snap stretch where he singlehandedly thwarted every play by the Green Bay Packers. That’s the type of instincts and playmaking ability that Kansas City could use in Gay Jr.’s absence.

“He’s smart, he’s instinctive, he’s tough and he’s got a good grasp of the defense,” Reid said of Harris. “Spags does a lot with the scheme and you’ve got to be able to process all of that. He does a good job with that.”

There is little doubt that the Chiefs will miss what Gay Jr. provides on the field, but there seems to be a lot of confidence that the defense won’t miss a beat with Harris in there.

Yet I am also hearing that, if no trade involving Westbrook materializes and if he is on the roster when the Lakers start practicing on Sept. 27, new Lakers coach Darvin Ham remains determined to carve out a real role for Westbrook. Sources say that the Lakers, to date, have strongly resisted the idea of shelving Westbrook completely until they can find a trade for him like the Rockets tried last season with John Wall — even after trading for longtime Westbrook adversary Patrick Beverley. Beverley’s arrival makes it more likely that Westbrook will be off the active roster by the start of training camp, either through a trade or the team sending him home a la the Rockets with John Wall last season, according to a source close to the situation. -via The Athletic / August 25, 2022

Why professional golfers seek out mental performance coaches vs. sports psychologists

Often times golfers struggle with the pressures of the game and may not even realize it.

It’s no secret that great golf comes from between the ears. Often times golfers struggle with the pressures of the game and may not even realize it. There are many factors that go into the mental game of golf like how you talk to yourself or how you visualize a shot.

Jamie Glazier is an Australian Mental Performance Coach (NLP Master Practitioner), specializing in the sport of golf for nearly 20 years. We asked him why some golfers prefer to seek mental performance coaches vs. sports psychologists.

Sports psychology and mental performance coaching can overlap at times, but both practices focus on enhancing an athlete’s cognitive performance and ability to remain focused and calm during high-pressure situations. All athletes face systemic elements that play an important role of an athlete’s performance.

This topic is controversial to some. but you may be wondering what that main differences of the two are. It’s important to note that mental performance coaches are not psychologists.

“I would clarify the difference by saying a sports psychologist comes from a clinical background that targets any persistent or distressing life problems that can cause stress, anxiety, or depression,” said Glazier. “A Mental Performance Coach focuses more on looking at where the athlete currently is at, their cognitive behaviors and looking forward to what the athlete would like to achieve or what patterns they would like to change.”

Many golfers seek out Mental Performance Coaches over sports psychologists because they provide a more practical structure to the athletes mental game training program. They can provide exercises to help build a specific cognitive function that can aid the golfer in closing out a round of golf without letting the pressure interrupt a streak of good play.

Some players may solely want to focus on the sport and don’t have any past trauma or outside issues they want to address and don’t need the psychology aspect of help.

“Some of the key areas I work in with a golfer are expectation management, enhancing focus, self-belief, achieving clarity, cognitive flexibility, enhancing commitment with shots, self-identity/athletic identity and achieving a balance between life and golf just to name a few,” said Glazier.

Glazier offers an online training platform for elite and club level golfers where they can begin to build their mental game with approximately eight courses, a members forum and weekly mental game tips.

“Get Real” sessions create chemistry for the Duck football players

“Get Real” sessions help create chemistry on the field and form a bond off the field for the Ducks.

The phrase “get real” can have a number of meanings, some good and some not-so-good.

Dan Lanning and his staff has implemented what they have called “get real” sessions with the Oregon football players. They are designed for players to open up about themselves anywhere from what’s been troubling them right now to how they were brought up as a child.

It’s about maintaining mental health in a game where physical health gets 99 percent of the attention. It’s also about creating chemistry among the Ducks off the field. The thought is if you have chemistry off the field, you’ll have chemistry on the field as well.

In a game where even the slightest edge can be the difference between winning and losing, it makes it all that more important to have a close bond. It can also help players deal with adversity and tragedy such as the death of a teammate, something, unfortunately, Oregon had to face with the untimely death of tight end Spencer Webb.

For players who have been in the program for several years, leaning on each other may be easier and that chemistry may already exist. But for guys such as transfer tailback Noah Whittington from Western Kentucky, these sessions can mean even more.

During Oregon media day, Whittington noted that although he’s been in Eugene for just five months, he feels closer to these particular teammates than he has before.

That extra effort by all involved might lead to a first down to sustain a drive or perhaps blocking a little harder to give the quarterback the split second he needs to find the open receiver, which leads to victory.

An open advocate for mental health, …

An open advocate for mental health, DeRozan has been open about his previous battles with anxiety and depression. Similar feelings of angst crept in as he journeyed into another unknown space. “Big names always kinda sign in the first day or two,” he said. “I went a couple days into free agency with still such a question mark. Was I gonna go somewhere on a one-year deal? Was I gonna take the minimum? The narrative of it … it put me in such a f***** up place. I remember through that whole time it was three, four days I didn’t leave out the room. I didn’t see the sunset, I didn’t see the sun come up … I was depressed, it put me in a depressed mindset cause I didn’t know what the f*** was gonna happen.”

Punter Tom Snee announces he is stepping away from football

In his announcement via Instagram, Oregon punter Tom Snee says he is stepping away from football because of mental health reasons.

The game of football is such a physical sport where injuries are a common thing. But sometimes we forget the game can take a mental toll as well.

Apparently, it has taken a toll on Oregon Ducks junior punter Tom Snee.

The Melbourne, Australia native announced via his Instagram page that he would be stepping away from the sport of college football, citing he wants to prioritize his mental health.

It’s a big blow for the Ducks since Snee is the only punter listed on the roster at this point in time. Oregon also didn’t sign a punter in this last recruiting class and kicker Camden Lewis doesn’t have any punting experience in college.

Snee was among the best punters in the conference, averaging nearly 42 yards and putting 17 of his 44 punts inside the 20-yard line.
