A poor Memphis player got nailed right in the groin by a ref throwing a flag

OUCH.

You never want to have a flag thrown your team’s way, but you especially don’t want a flag thrown your way.

That’s what happened to poor Memphis wide receiver Joseph Scates, who got an errant flag thrown right into his groin by a referee with very poor aim during his team’s overtime win against Charlotte on Saturday.

It’s the kind of below-the-belt hazard that you just cannot predict, as Scates admirably tried to walk off the unfortunate contact but clearly looked like he was in a bit of pain.

The flag just nailed him right where it hurts the most, and you have to feel for him in this incredibly unfortunate moment.

The ref who threw this flag needs to watch out next time, lest he accidentally nail somebody else in the groin the next time he throws a penalty flag.

At the least, Scates should get, like, one gimme illegal shift or something that’s not called on him in a game of his choosing. He deserves it after this encounter with officiating.

Alabama falls out of College Football Playoff in latest bowl game projection

Alabama’s loss to Texas leads to a bit of a slide in the latest bowl game projections. See who and where they are predicted to play.

Alabama football’s chances of making the College Football Playoff took a huge hit after the at-home loss to Texas. However, the Crimson Tide could still reach the playoffs with strong performances the rest of the season and a few teams ahead of them losing.

The latest college football bowl game prediction after Week 2 by Mark Schlabach and Kyle Bonagura of ESPN has Alabama in the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl.

Both Schlabach and Bonagura have the Tide in the same bowl game but with different opponents. Schlabach has Alabama facing USC, while Bonugara picked Memphis.

If these projections hold, then it would be similar to the outcome of the 2022 season, when Alabama failed to make the playoffs and faced a strong opponent in a New Year’s Six bowl game.

There are plenty of games remaining and a plethora of opportunities for the Crimson Tide to work its way back up near the top.

SERVPRO First Responder Bowl What Happened

Memphis needed a little bit to heat up, and then it all kicked in midway through the second quarter. With the score tied a 3-3, the game blew open with Seth Henigan throwing three touchdown passes – including two to Eddie Lewis – for a 24-3 Tiger halftime lead. The game coasted in from there.

– Utah State tried three quarterbacks, but injuries were a problem. Bishop Davenport stepped in and led a 92-yard drive early in the fourth quarter to pull within 14. An onside kick went awry, Memphis hammered away on the short field for the first of two Jevyon Ducker touchdown runs in the final eight minutes.

Utah State kept fighting, but it couldn’t make anything work once the second quarter Tiger point avalanche hit. It couldn’t control the clock, was -2 in turnover margin, and Memphis kept its offense moving when it had to.

SERVPRO First Responder Bowl What It All Means

It might have been a disappointing year overall for Memphis, but this makes it a whole lot better. After going 6-6 last year and not being able to play in a bowl game, the program kept alive a nice run of nine straight years without a losing season. It also turned into a good win for head coach Ryan Silverfield – 7-6 looks a whole lot better than 6-7.

If nothing else, this was a nice way to go into the offseason and into a new American Athletic Conference world as even more of a contender.

Utah State was missing too many pieces to pull this off. It was outmanned against Memphis, but it was still a strong effort to close out a solid year. It started bad, got better, and the team never quit fighting.

It was a losing season with this loss – the second in three seasons – but head coach Blake Anderson is a good one to keep the momentum rolling. There’s enough in place to build off the second half of the season and be a player in the Mountain West title chase.

Despite the setback, the Cowboys will look to finish the season on a high note against Wisconsin.

Meanwhile, the Badgers made headlines earlier in the season when they fired their head coach after just five games. They went on to finish the season with a 4-3 record under an interim coach, setting up a matchup with Oklahoma State in the Guaranteed Rate Bowl.

Memphis had one of the worst bad beats of the year, but at least a Tigers wideout made an absolutely gorgeous 41-yard TD pass

Nevermind the bad beat. Gabriel Rogers got tricks, y’all.

Houston won Friday night – making it a brutally bad beat for folks who bet on Memphis – but the Tigers had whole lot of fun making Cougars coach Dana Holgersen really mad.

Memphis – who was favored by 2.5 points against the Cougars – had built a 20-7 lead by the start of the fourth quarter at the Liberty Bowl by scoring on some run-pass-option trickery, taking advantage of a really ugly missed field goal, and stuffing Houston on the goal line.

While the Tigers had a comfortable lead late in the game (and we’ll get to how they blew that in just a moment) they still had some more tricks up their sleeves, drawing up a play that would’ve made veterans of trickeration like Georgia’s Kenny McIntosh and Troy’s Luke Whittemore smile.

Lined up in a shotgun set with two receivers to the left and one to the right, Memphis quarterback Seth Henigan sent his tight end in motion, took the snap and threw a quick pass to wideout Gabriel Rogers. Houston defenders swarmed him, but Rogers left them in a dizzy as he scampered away. On the run, Rogers then fired a 41-yard strike downfield to fellow receiver Asa Martin, who hauled the pass in for a touchdown.

It was a receiver-to-receiver touchdown pass of beauty, and worked much better than whatever the Seattle Seahawks tried to do a few weeks ago.

See for yourself:

Quarterback is just the latest position the super-talented Rogers has starred in for the Tigers. He was mostly a defensive back his first two seasons, played running back and returned kicks last year, and is now featuring at wide receiver for the Tigers.

It was another play by Memphis that likely drew this sort of reaction from Holgersen:

But the joy for the Tigers wouldn’t last, and this game had plenty of more fireworks. Later in the fourth quarter, Houston’s Jaycee Rogers ran back a kick 100 yards for a touchdown to kickstart the Cougars’ comeback.

The point total in this game was set at 57.5 points. The Cougars wrecked the hopes of the folks who bet the under – and the bettors who grabbed the Memphis moneyline – by scoring twice in the final 90 seconds to take a 33-32 victory.

Memphis Tigers Preview 2022

It’s not like it wouldn’t have been nice to get the call.

Cincinnati just won the AAC title for a second year in a row. It’s off to the Big 12, likely in 2023.

UCF has an AAC powerhouse for years. It’s off to the Big 12, likely in 2023.

Houston won an AAC title back in 2015, and that’s it. Memphis has won two of them. Houston is off to the Big 12, likely in 2023, and Memphis is still sticking around the old league even though it makes sense geographically, it’s a Tier 1 academic institution, has a decent media market, good enrollment, and …

It stinks, but now Memphis has to make the best of it by positioning itself as the star of the conference that’s going to soon effectively be a heavier version of Conference USA.

Last year’s team went 6-6 in the rebuild with four close losses that easily could’ve gone the other way. The 2022 version is full of veterans on offense, should be strong in the defensive backfield, and overall should be just a wee bit motivated.

Memphis Tigers Preview 2022: Offense

The offense that made its living on home run hitting plays was able to get things going through the air, but the normally devastating running game didn’t go anywhere.

It finished 10th in the AAC even though the line was okay and the offense as a whole finished third in the conference. New offensive coordinator Tim Cramsey knows how to get a ground game going, and that means …

The backs need more work. Brandon Thomas ran well averaging close to six yards per carry with a team-high 669 yards and eight touchdowns as a freshman, and he’s not alone. The Tigers have plenty of good backs in the rotation, and they’re piling on with Jevyon Ducker coming in from Northern Illinois.

The O line doesn’t have a ton of stars, but it gets back three starters with the tackles set, Jacob Likes a veteran center, and with Ira Henry coming in from Florida State.

No one seemed to notices with all the Cincinnati drama, but Memphis QB Seth Henigan had a terrific freshman season throwing for over 3,300 yards and 25 touchdowns. He’s not going to run much, and he needs to be a bit more accurate, but he’ll push the ball down the field.

The receiving corps loses its two stars in Calvin Austin and TE Sean Dykes. The next three top targets are back – led by union Javon Ivory – and Joseph Scates is coming in from Iowa State.

Memphis Tigers Preview 2022: Defense

Defense was a mere suggestion at Memphis for years, and it didn’t do enough last year, either. It wasn’t totally miserable, but it allowed over 418 yards and 29 points per game, the secondary got ripped up, and few defenses in America were worse on third downs.

It’s not up to former Ohio State assistant Matt Barnes to figure it all out. He loses a slew of key tacklers, but the secondary should be better if he can generate a pass rush.

The line goes back the five sacks of leading pass rusher Jaylon Allen, but this isn’t a deep group and it needs the bulk on the inside. It’s more about the quickness than the 300+ pound Coke machine inside, but that all has to translate into more plays behind the line.

The 123 stops of leading tackler JJ Russell are gone, but Xavier Cullens is back in the middle and getting Geoffrey Cantin-Arku from Syracuse on the outside helps.

The secondary needs its experience to translate into more production. There are tacklers – safety Quindell Johnson is going to be an All-AAC performer – but the big plays need to come from the corners. The DBs only generated seven interceptions.
