Dolphins LB Melvin Ingram fought to practice on Wednesday

The plan wasn’t to have him participate to the level that he did.

The Miami Dolphins didn’t add much to their defense this offseason, but one player they did bring in was veteran linebacker Melvin Ingram.

Ingram joined the Dolphins on a team-friendly one-year deal after a 2021 season split between the Kansas City Chiefs and Pittsburgh Steelers that saw him record just two sacks, his lowest total since 2013 when he played in just four games.

However, he still brings the ability to create pressure and veteran leadership that any team can always use more of.

On Wednesday, members of the media got to see him practice for the first time in aqua and orange, and he actually got reps in team drills, despite head coach Mike McDaniel and his staff wanting the linebacker to take it easy.

“It was really cool to see him yesterday because his plan was, where he was practicing for the first time, but he wasn’t scheduled,” McDaniel said. “We had planned to not have him in team periods, just so we don’t rush the process and make sure that we don’t put him in harm’s way. And, he was fighting tooth and nail with the defensive coaches, in general, and they let the guy in for a couple plays which I immediately saw and made sure it was on his agenda, which it was. That’s what you want as a leader on the team or a veteran player that’s had production. You want to be on the field. You want younger players to understand it’s a privilege to be on the field.”

While Ingram might not have been working in minicamp or OTA sessions earlier this offseason, he’s continued to help a young linebacker like Jaelan Phillips develop his game.

“He’s been mentoring me some, taking me under his wing,” Phillips said about Ingram.

That’s where the veteran’s addition is invaluable. If he can teach the second-year former Hurricane some tricks of the trade, Phillips could see his both his pressure and sack numbers rise in 2022.

Add that to the intensity and drive that Ingram’s bringing, and this signing’s looking like a great one earlier on.

2022 Dolphins position preview: Breaking down LBs ahead of camp

Let’s talk the second-level, from Jerome Baker to Cameron Goode.

The Miami Dolphins rookies are set to return to the facility on Tuesday, July 19, with the rest of the team reporting Tuesday, July 26. From that point, Miami will begin their first training camp sessions under head coach Mike McDaniel before his first season with the organization.

This time is important to discuss the state of the Dolphins’ roster and assess each position before they get a chance to hold true competitions.

We’ve talked about quarterbacksrunning backswide receiverstight ends and offensive linemen and defensive linemen, but now it’s time to slide back in the defense to break down the linebackers on the roster.

2 Dolphins appear on PFF’s list of 32 best contracts

General manager Chris Grier got a couple of deals this offseason.

The Miami Dolphins are spending $255.78 million in 2022, the 10th-most in the NFL, according to Spotrac. That doesn’t get done without having some rather large contracts on the books.

General manager Chris Grier has spent this offseason managing the Dolphins’ salary cap situation and has done so rather impressively. With all of the agreements that the team has at this point, two were listed by Pro Football Focus’ Brad Spielberger among the most team-friendly deals in the league.

Left tackle Terron Armstead’s five-year, $75 million contract ($43.37 million guaranteed) came in at No. 10, and linebacker Melvin Ingram’s one-year $4 million contract ($1.65 million guaranteed) was listed at No. 28.

Here’s what Spielberger wrote about Armstead and his contract:

“Armstead’s inclusion here is particularly notable because he just signed a new contract as a free agent this offseason after nine stellar years with the New Orleans Saints. He has earned pass-blocking grades of 80.0 or better in every season since 2015 and is a huge improvement on the left side of the Dolphins’ line, which has been a revolving door over the past few years.

Armstead has also graded out well as an outside-zone run blocker, earning an 82.8 grade on such plays over his career, making him a good fit in new head coach Mike McDaniel’s offense. We’ve seen tackles play at an elite level well into their 30s, and if Armstead can maintain his health, this new deal could look like a huge bargain in hindsight.”

There are some high expectations for Armstead this year, as he’ll be tasked with anchoring a young offensive line with his performance and leadership/coaching ability. That’s a lot to ask for a player who’s struggled to stay on the field in recent years.

Ingram’s deal is much more of a low-risk, high-reward type move. If he doesn’t succeed with his play, his leadership and experience should be helpful for a group that’s growing.

However, the names on these lists are often team-friendly for a reason. Last year, Will Fuller’s one-year, $10 million deal (fully guaranteed) was the Dolphins’ only consideration, and he didn’t live up to that deal with his injury keeping him out most of the season.

Mike McDaniel explains why Dolphins signed Melvin Ingram

It’s more than just what he can do on the field.

The Miami Dolphins improved their roster last week when they added veteran linebacker Melvin Ingram on a one-year deal worth up to $5 million.

Ingram hasn’t exactly been the perennial Pro Bowler that he was during his prime years with the San Diego and Los Angeles Chargers, but he’s still able to provide something to a young team trying to prove that they’re contenders.

On Tuesday, head coach Mike McDaniel was asked about the impact that Ingram can make in Miami.

“He’s a veteran player that has been very productive in this league,” McDaniel said. “In conjunction with the scouting department – Chris (Grier), myself and the rest of the scouting department and the coaching staff felt very excited to have the opportunity to add him to the team. He’s a veteran presence, a guy who has been in big games, a guy that for a young team can be very impressionable and a playmaker to boot.”

The off-field portion is so important with this team. Ingram has an opportunity to be a great mentor to some of the younger members of this organization. He can help them work on their craft as well as teach them how to be professional football players, which is something he has 10 years of experience in.

If he can come in and add productive reps on the field on gamedays as well, this has a chance to be a great signing for this team, as they attempt to make the postseason for the first time in five years.

4 things to know about new Dolphins LB Melvin Ingram

Get to know the newest member of the squad.

The Miami Dolphins have a ton of new pieces to their offense this offseason, but this week, they’ve added a solid veteran contributor to their defense by signing linebacker Melvin Ingram to a one-year deal.

Ingram could come into a room of younger linebackers and really take charge while helping these Dolphins adjust to the NFL game and take the next steps in their careers. On top of that, while his sack numbers have dipped, his pressure rates are still solid, so he can still be an impact player despite being 33 years old.

Here are a few things that fans should know about the linebacker before he hits the field.

Breaking down terms of OLB Melvin Ingram’s contract with Dolphins

The contract doesn’t break the bank.

Despite NFL free agency opening up over two months ago, the Miami Dolphins are still making additions to their team that could prove to be impactful.

The Dolphins officially signed veteran linebacker Melvin Ingram this week to a one-year contract that could be worth up to $5 million, according to ESPN’s Field Yates.

Ingram’s deal will count for a $3.92 million cap hit. He’ll $1.65 million in the form of a signing bonus, $1.67 million in base salary, $680,000 in per-game roster bonuses, $750,000 in playtime/sack/team defense incentives and $250,000 if he makes the Pro Bowl.

This money is probably fair for a player of Ingram’s caliber at this stage of his career. He’s still able to create pressure, but he hasn’t been able to convert sacks in recent years. Miami knows better than anyone that pressure can be just as important as the actual sacks themselves.

Ingram, at 33, will probably be used more situationally with the Dolphins in 2022. There would be some genuine surprise to see him hit the 80% of defensive snaps workload that he had been prior to 2021.

However, a big reason Dolphins fans should be happy about this signing is that he could help Jaelan Phillips take his game to the next level. If he’s generating pressures while playing roughly 50% of snaps and helping some of the younger linebackers develop, the signing is more than worth it.

Tyreek Hill is thrilled that the Dolphins are signing Melvin Ingram

They were teammates last season.

The Miami Dolphins have done a lot of work to improve their roster this offseason, as they fell just short of making the postseason again in 2021.

They’ve added Terron Armstead, Raheem Mostert, Chase Edmonds, Connor Williams, Tyreek Hill and more to play under new head coach Mike McDaniel. Miami’s newest signing is veteran linebacker Melvin Ingram, who reportedly agreed to a deal on Sunday.

Hill and Ingram were teammates in Kansas City last season after Ingram asked to be traded from the Pittsburgh Steelers. When the wide receiver heard the news that the Dolphins had signed Ingram, he took to Twitter to celebrate.

Miami keeps adding talented players that have the potential to help them finally break through to the postseason for the first time since 2016.

Chiefs’ free agent DE Melvin Ingram to sign with Dolphins

Melvin Ingram has opted to sign with the #Dolphins over the #Chiefs per a new report.

The Kansas City Chiefs are losing one of their top remaining free agents to the Miami Dolphins.

According to NFL reporter Jordan Schultz, Melvin Ingram has made his free-agent decision and will sign with the Dolphins. Ingram took a free-agent visit with Miami in mid-April. Kansas City expressed interest in re-signing Ingram, even enacting the rarely used UFA tender on him in early May. Brett Veach said the move would help keep a line of communication open between the two sides.

Unfortunately, Ingram appears to be choosing to move on after playing a combined 12 games with the Chiefs in 2021. His decision also leaves the team with a need in the veteran pass-rusher department.

Ingram first joined the Chiefs midseason in 2021 when the team traded a sixth-round draft pick to the Pittsburgh Steelers. He helped reignite the pass rush in Kansas City, recording 33 pressures and four sacks over the span of nine regular-season games and three postseason games. His contributions completely changed the complexion of a defense that wasn’t looking so great to start the 2021 NFL season.

The only good news here is that the Chiefs had the foresight to use the UFA tender on Ingram. The team using this tender means that Ingram’s contract with Miami will still count toward the compensatory pick formula for Kansas City even though the deadline to qualify has since passed.

Report: Dolphins to sign LB Melvin Ingram

The linebacker visited Miami earlier in the offseason.

The Miami Dolphins have been extremely active during this offseason, as they’ve added a ton of new players to help turn their team into a contender.

Now, they’ve added another talented veteran, as Pro Football Network’s Aaron Wilson reported that the Dolphins have agreed to terms with free agent linebacker Melvin Ingram.

Ingram visited the Dolphins early in the offseason, but nothing had been rumored until today.

Last season, Ingram split time with the Kansas City Chiefs and Pittsburgh Steelers, recording just two sacks. However, according to Pro Football Focus, Ingram created pressure on 11% of his pass-rushing snaps in 2021, which is about equal to Emmanuel Ogbah’s production.

His presence will not only benefit the play on the field, but he should be able to help out younger players like Jaelan Phillips who are looking to make a name for themselves.
