49ers won’t replace Christian McCaffrey on roster yet

The 49ers officially placed the All-Pro running back on the injured reserve.

Prior to their second game of the season against the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday, the San Francisco 49ers officially placed All-Pro running back Christian McCaffrey on the injured reserve. McCaffrey will now miss at least the next four games as he continues to heal from a calf/Achilles injury that kept him out from most of training camp and all of the preseason.

With shifting McCaffrey to the injured reserve, the 49ers will have a new opening on their 53-man roster. As of Saturday, the 49ers have yet to fill their opening on the official 53.

After announcing McCaffrey to the IR, the 49ers also announced the elevation of safety Tracy Walker from the practice squad.

Walker III will provide depth in the secondary with fellow safety Talanoa Hufanga listed as doubtful. Walker III was elevated from the practice squad during the season-opener against the New York Jets, but he did not play a single snap.

With McCaffrey on the IR, breakout running back Jordan Mason will continue to serve as the starter next to Brock Purdy in the 49ers backfield. Mason rumbled for 147 yards and a touchdown in his first start against the Jets on Monday.

The 49ers are set to meet Sam Darnold, Justin Jefferson and the 49ers on Sunday in Minnesota at 10 a.m. PT.

NFL ‘looked into’ 49ers handling of Christian McCaffrey injury status

Prior to the 49ers’ season opener, the All-Pro running back was listed as inactive against the Jets.

Shortly before the start of the San Francisco 49ers’ season opener against the New York Jets on Monday Night Football, Christian McCaffrey was listed as inactive due to an ankle/Achilles injury.

McCaffrey was initially listed as questionable for Monday’s tilt with the Jets after participating in practice on a limited basis during the week.

After the game, McCaffrey’s backup, Jordan Mason was asked when he found out he’d be starting in place of the All-Pro running back.

Coming off a breakout performance, Mason mentioned he’d found out on Friday he would be starting. When speaking to reporters after the game, Kyle Shanahan said he’d never told Mason he would be starting on Monday against the Jets.

Before Week 2, the NFL looked into the 49ers reporting of McCaffrey’s injury status. In a statement released on Friday, the 49ers didn’t violate the NFL injury status rules according to the NFL.

It’s something we’re considering now, yeah. Yesterday was his worst day. It’s on and off, but with yesterday, having the most pain, it’s something we’re going to be discussing here in the next 24 hours.

McCaffery missed all of the preseason and most of training camp with the same injury. The Stanford product is coming off an All-Pro season with a career-high 1459 yards and 21 total touchdowns.

Christian McCaffrey preparing to play in Week 2 vs. Vikings

The 49ers star running back was ruled out of Monday night’s regular season opener against the Jets due to a ankle/Achilles injury.

Despite missing Monday’s regular-season opener against the New York Jets with the same ankle/Achilles injury that ruled him out for most of training camp and the preseason, Christian McCaffrey is preparing to play in Week 2 against the Minnesota Vikings.

On Wednesday, the All-Pro rusher spoke to members of the media in Santa Clara and was asked about his potential availability. McCaffrey revealed his mentality for Week 2 is that he’s going to play.

My mentality is I’m playing this week. That’s where I’m at. That’s how I am every week. I’m not lying. I think as soon as a player says, maybe I’ll play, maybe I won’t. That’s not a good mentality to go into a week with when you’re kind of on the fence. So for me, I’m ready to go.
