UFC 310 video: Michael Chiesa finishes Max Griffin, calls for spot on Seattle card

UFC Seattle is officially official and Michael Chiesa wants on.

LAS VEGAS – [autotag]Michael Chiesa[/autotag] is no stranger to the rear-naked choke, and he made that known once again Saturday at UFC 310.

In a welterweight bout on the preliminary card at T-Mobile Arena, Chiesa (18-7 MMA, 13-7 UFC) tapped [autotag]Max Griffin[/autotag] (20-11 MMA, 8-9 UFC) with his signature choke for the tap at 1:56 of Round 3.

After the fight, Chiesa called for a spot on the promotion’s Feb. 22 event in Seattle. Chiesa is a Spokane, Wash. native and has not competed in his home state since the promotion’s most recent visit in 2013.

Chiesa, 37, has now won two fights in a row. He defeated Tony Ferguson by submission in August. That win snapped a three-fight skid.

Griffin, 39, has now alternated wins and losses across his six most recent outings.

Max Griffin pumped for ranked opposition Michael Chiesa at UFC 310 with title run in mind

Max Griffin is 38 years old, but he has no intentions of slowing down.

[autotag]Max Griffin[/autotag] has been around the UFC block a time or two.

Officially one of the more senior welterweights on the promotion’s roster, Griffin (20-10 MMA, 8-8 UFC) returns Dec. 7 vs. [autotag]Michael Cheisa[/autotag] (17-7 MMA, 12-7 UFC) at UFC 310. He admits this fight could be the biggest of his career – and could even lead to a title run.

“I would say the next fight is the best fight,” Griffin recently told MMA Junkie Radio. “To beat him in tremendous fashion as what’s written, someone ranked. He’s been ranked for my whole life. He’s a ranked guy to me. Just his name and he won ‘The Ultimate Fighter,’ and just with who he’s beat, he’s had a rough patch, but I don’t care about that. He’s still Michael Chiesa. He still just subbed Tony Ferguson. He was on a losing streak. That doesn’t matter. We’re all dangerous. But he is that ranked fighter to me.

“After this fight, they’re going to want to see me against somebody really good. This is going to be the best I’ve ever looked, ever moved, everything. Everything. Now is my time. I’ve got this new deal, and I’m ready for the title run. I’ve fought everyone, all the styles. I’m healthy, happy, and I’m ready to deliver.”

Griffin, 38, revealed he was offered Chiesa for Miami at UFC 299 in March. However, the fight was on a few days notice and Griffin declined as he could not make weight. He was disappointed during that saga, but elated when matchmaker Sean Shelby circled back for an end-of-year showdown.

“Ecstatic,” Griffin said. “We’ve been talking to Sean for months. … Chiesa wasn’t my target, per se. … For them to give me this fight, Sean was happy about it. We told Sean how excited I am. He was like, ‘I wish all fighters were excited.’ Dave Hirschbein shared with Sean how excited I was. Sean was like, ‘I wish all the fighters were excited when I put these fights together.'”

Not only is Griffin familiar with Chiesa from a long-distance observer’s perspective, he got his hands on his upcoming foe many years ago in the training room. There’s lots of mutual respect.

“Michael Chiesa, I’ve known him for so long,” Griffin said. “I’m a big fan of him. We even trained back in the day a little bit. We rolled over at 10th Planet. This was like six years ago. But he’s good people. He’s good people. It’s funny. He told one of my coaches, coach Joey (Rodriguez) was over there with him… Anthony (Hernandez), all them were over there. He was at the desk and he said, ‘Loser rolls up.’ So he better get f*cking ready to roll. That’s all I’ve got to say.”

Welterweights Michael Chiesa, Max Griffin booked for UFC 310

A battle between welterweight veterans Michael Chiesa and Max Griffin is headed to UFC 310.

A battle between welterweight veterans is headed to UFC 310.

[autotag]Michael Chiesa[/autotag] takes on [autotag]Max Griffin[/autotag] Dec. 7 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas (ESPN+ pay-per-view, ESPN2, ESPN+). Two people with knowledge of the situation confirmed the booking to MMA Junkie after an initial report from MMA Fighting.

After three straight setbacks to Vicente Luque, Sean Brady and Kevin Holland, Chiesa (17-7 MMA, 12-7 UFC) returned to submit Tony Ferguson in the first round at UFC on ABC 7 in August.

Griffin (20-10 MMA, 8-8 UFC) has split his past four octagon appearances. After dropping a unanimous decision to Michael Morales, Griffin rebounded with a close win over Jeremiah Wells at UFC Fight Night 236 in February.

With the addition, the latest UFC 310 lineup now includes:

  • Ciryl Gane vs. Alexander Volkov
  • Dominick Reyes vs. Anthony Smith
  • Virna Jandiroba vs. Tatiana Suarez
  • Clay Guida vs. Chase Hooper
  • Michael Chiesa vs. Max Griffin

Max Griffin takes issue with judge Sal D’Amato’s scoring: ‘He picks against me every single time’

Max Griffin vented his frustration towards judge Sal D’Amato for scoring the fight against him.

LAS VEGAS –  [autotag]Max Griffin[/autotag] vented his frustration toward judge Sal D’Amato for scoring his most recent fight – a win – against him.

Griffin (20-10 MMA, 8-8 UFC) defeated Jeremiah Wells (12-4-1 MMA, 4-2 UFC) by split decision Saturday at UFC Fight Night 236 at the UFC Apex. Two of the judges scored the fight 29-28 for Griffin; D’Amato scored it 29-28 for Wells.

Griffin was adamant D’Amato has something against him. D’Amato was one of two judges who awarded Neil Magny the split decision win over Griffin at UFC on ESPN 33 in March 2022.

“I cannot stand Sal D’Amato,” Griffin told MMA Junkie and other reporters post-fight at UFC Fight Night 236. “He has me on Neil Magny losing, he has me on numerous fights. … He picks against me every single time. I don’t know if I did something in a past life to him, if I did something to him, but Sal D’Amato hates me.”

Most media members tracked by MMA Decisions had Wells winning the fight Saturday, but Griffin was adamant he had done enough to get his hand raised. He has split his past four appearances.

According to MMA Decisions, D’Amato has scored four Griffin fights in recent years. He scored against him in the Wells fight Griffin won Saturday and against him in the Magny fight he lost. But D’Amato was the only judge to score a Griffin split decision loss to Alex Oliveira in Griffin’s favor in 2020 and also concurred with two other judges in a Griffin unanimous decision win over Carlos Condit.

“We won,” Griffin said. “We totally won. Ask (D’Amato) – he knows I won. It’s every time.”
