Rutgers men’s basketball unable to stop Iowa’s offense in 86-77 lose

Rutgers men’s basketball lost to Iowa on Saturday.

On Saturday, Rutgers men’s basketball returned to action for the second time in January. The Scarlet Knights could not get back in the win column as the Hawkeyes emerged with an 86-77 win.

While Rutgers played much better in the second half, their rally fell short. For the second straight game, Clifford Omoruyi scored less than ten points and Aundre Hyatt only scored nine. However, there was one bright spot in Mawot Mag.

The Melbourne native led Rutgers in scoring with 24 points. He was also a menace on the boards with ten rebounds. After missing the start of the season due to injury, Mag showed against Iowa why Rutgers was eagerly awaiting his return.

As the Hawkeyes rolled to their eighth win of the season, they took advantage of Rutgers mistakes. The Hawkeyes scored 16 points off turnovers and 38 points in the paint. While Iowa had its fair share of ball control issues, it minimized its mistakes in the second half.

Offensively, the Hawkeyes were led by the talented duo of Ben Krikke and Payton Sandfort. Krikke added 19 points to his resume and Sandfort had 24 points in 32 minutes of action.

With their 14th game of the season in the books, Rutgers will now turn their focus to their match-up with Indiana on Tuesday.

Rutgers basketball: Mawot Mag to make season debut against Seton Hall

Mawot Mag is expected to return for Rutgers basketball this weekend.

Rutgers men’s basketball will get a significant boost on Saturday when Mawot Mag returns to the lineup. Mag will be making his season debut after missing the first eight games due to a knee injury. His return is needed as Rutgers has lost their last two games.

Although Mag has dealt with injuries the last two seasons, he has been valuable when healthy. In 23 games during the 2022-2023 campaign, Mag averaged 7.8 points a game. He was also a threat on the boards, with 85 defensive rebounds.

While the Melbourne native will be eased along, Rutgers is a better team with Mag in the lineup. He saw an increase in playing time last year and took full advantage. After scoring 106 points during his first two seasons as a Scarlet Knight, he finished last season with 180 points.

The Scarlet Knights did not hide their excitement for his return as the news became official yesterday afternoon. In a post on the X app, Rutgers posted a picture of Mag with a caption that said, ” Return of the Mag.” Many fans responded by welcoming Mag back to the team.

With Mag back in the lineup, Rutgers bench also becomes deeper. If the Prolific Prep High School product can regain his form from last season, this Rutgers team will be a tough matchup.

Jon Rothstein projects the Rutgers basketball starting five

Jon Rothstein projects the Rutgers men’s basketball starting lineup.

Put it in pen: Rutgers basketball has a starting five according to Jon Rothstein. The college basketball insider has spoken following his time spent at the team’s facility this week.

The lineup projection isn’t much of a surprise, but the inclusion of a true freshman is particularly interesting or perhaps, more apropos, intriguing.

Four-star Gavin Griffiths, the highest-ranked player to ever sign with Rutgers, is in the starting five at small forward according to Rothstein. The 6-foot-6 forward from Connecticut was ranked the No. 12 small forward in the nation according to ESPN.

Why is this significant? Rothstein was at the men’s basketball practice on Thursday, giving him up close access. Seeing Griffiths work out and perform in person is just further validation that the program landed someone who can contribute and help immediately.

Rothstein also has Mawot Mag, injured last season in the win at Madison Square Garden over Michigan State, in his starting lineup. Mag likely won’t be ready at the start of the season but his loss last season was noticeable, coinciding with the team’s drop in form.

Again, like the news about Griffiths, the inclusion of Mag in the starting lineup at some point this upcoming season is a nice little nugget from Rothstein. Not shocking, but just good confirmation about the player’s progress this offseason.

Griffiths adds a true shooter’s touch to the lineup, with the ability to stretch the floor. He has a very polished outside game.

With a healthy Mag and the insertion of [autotag]Noah Fernandes[/autotag], a transfer from UMass, the Rutgers lineup should get the Scarlet Knights back to the postseason.

Rothstein is a college basketball insider for CBS Sports and creates content for Fan Duel.

A big senior campaign could be in store for Mawot Mag (if he stays at Rutgers)

Mawot Mag could be poised for a big senior season with Rutgers.

When the 2023-2024 season begins for Rutgers basketball, the roster will look very different. While the Scarlet Knights will be without their leading scorer from last season, there are still some talented players on this team. That includes Mawot Mag, who took his game to another level during the 2022-2023 campaign.

That is, of course, assuming that he stays.

In his junior season, the Australian native set new career highs in points per game with 7.8 and rebounds per game with 5.3. While injuries ended his season early, Mag was one of Rutgers best players. With him out of the lineup down the stretch, Rutgers struggled to win games and did not qualify for the NCAA Tournament.

While there was a lot to like about Mag’s game, the most significant change was his offense. Entering his junior season, the talented forward had never averaged more than 2.9 points a game. That changed last year as he scored ten or more in a game five times and had 29 points combined in his last three games.

As Rutgers looks to make a return to the NCAA Tournament, Mag will be looked at as one of the leaders on this team. If he can continue to score around ten points a game while being a force on the boards, they will be in a good spot. He showed flashes of being that player last year.

Although the expectations for Mag will be high, he has improved every year since arriving on campus. Entering his senior season, he will be motivated to build on his success. For Rutgers fans, he is a player to watch when basketball season rolls around.

Rutgers to face Michigan in the second round of the Big Ten Tournament

Rutgers men’s basketball has a huge game on Thursday against Michigan.

On Thursday, Rutgers men’s basketball will continue their postseason run against the Michigan Wolverines. In the second round of the Big Ten tournament, Rutgers will seek revenge against a Michigan team that won the season series.

Rutgers will need their stars to be at their best if they want to beat Michigan.

In the first matchup of the season between these two teams, Rutgers was only able to score 45 points. Cam Spencer led the way with 11 points, and Clifford Omoruyi was the only other Rutgers player to score in double-digits. They will need to be a lot better on Thursday afternoon.

Additionally, the Scarlet Knights only made four three-pointers and turned the ball over 13 times. Michigan took advantage of their mistakes and outscored Rutgers by 10 points in the second half.

While Rutgers is favored heading into this game, they have struggled lately. The Scarlet Knights have posted a 2-6 record in their last eight games. In that span, they have scored less than 60 points four times and been without a key player in Mawot Mag.

[lawrence-related id=24755]

For Rutgers, capitalizing on offense will be the key to getting back on track. They have talented pieces in Spencer, Omoruyi, and Caleb McConnell, who all at times this season have shown they can be difference makers. A big game from that trio and suffocating defense will make life difficult for Michigan.

The Wolverines will rely heavily on Hunter Dickerson, who is averaging 18.2 points and nine rebounds a game. Regardless of the outcome, this should be a close game between two talented teams.

Entering play on Sunday, the Scarlet Knights have posted a 2-5 record in their past seven games. However, they will have a shot at redemption against Northwestern.

Earlier this season, Rutgers beat Northwestern and will be looking to replicate that success. The Wildcats have also lost three straight games and only scored more than 70 points once in that span.

This Big Ten matchup will be close as both teams have been solid in conference play. While Northwestern has a better record, Rutgers is heavily favored. They will be motivated to prove their doubters wrong and end the regular season with a win.

Rutgers men’s basketball (17-10, 9-7 Big Ten) will face Michigan (15-12, 9-7 Big Ten) on Thursday night with the Scarlet Knights looking to win their second straight game. After a rough three-game stretch that included losses to Indiana, Illinois, and Nebraska, Rutgers was able to get back into the win column on Saturday. However, they will be facing a talented Michigan team.

While the 2022-2023 campaign has been full of ups and down for the Wolverines, they are averaging 73.5 points per game. Rutgers defense will be tested without one of its best players in this matchup.

If the Scarlet Knights can limit the Wolverines opportunities, then their success at home will continue. For Michigan, the key will be to apply pressure on every possession and force the Scarlet Knights to be perfect offensively.
