Rutgers football: A big recruiting weekend and a possible sell-out for the season opener

Rutgers football is hosting some bigtime recruits on Sunday.

PISCATAWAY, N.J. — Rutgers football will be hosting a number of top-tier recruits and commits this weekend for their season opener. It is an impressive haul for the Big Ten program.

The tturnout is especially impressive given that Rutgers is playing on Labor Day weekend and on a Sunday afternoon, not exacttly the usual time slot for college football. But Sunday’s impressive number of commits and recruits will give Rutgers a chance to showcase their development and growth under head coach Greg Schiano.

Sunday’s game against Norhtwestern (12:00 PM ET, CBS) is trending towards a sell-out.

Here is an updated list of the recruits who are expected to attend Sunday’s season opener for Rutgers football. Each player is linked to either their recruiting profile or more pertainent information.

Rutgers football commit: Matthew Ogunniyi is putting up video game numbers as a senior

Rutgers football commit Mathtew Ogunniyi has been dominant to start his senior season.

Maryland wide receiver Matthew Ogunniyi already has more receiving yards through the first two games of his senior season than he did all of last year. The Rutgers football commit has been downright dominant this season.

Through the season’s first two games, Ogunniyi has 16 receptions for 509 yards and seven touchdowns. He is showing why Rutgers made him a priority recruit and a focal point for the 2024 class.

This spring, Ogunniyi was offered by Texas A&M. His other Power Five offers were West Virginia and Rutgers. He committed to Rutgers in May.

This season’s production shows a massive leap in Ogunniyi’s development. In 2022 as a junior for Charles Herbert Flowers (Upper Marlboro, MD, he had eight receptions for 286 yards and five touchdowns in seven games played.

At 6-foot-5 and 205 pounds, Ogunniyi has elite size to be a Big Ten wide receiver. He also has impressive speed, making him a dynamic combination and a strong get for Rutgers.

He can play either wide receiver or tight end at the next level.

Rutgers has added some nice size at wide receiver including K.J. Duff, a Long Island athlete and a four-star recruit. Like Ogunniyi, there is some position versatility for Duff who also could end up as a tight end.

Rutgers Football 2024 recruit Matthew Ogunniyi’s film study

Rutgers football continues its strong 2024 recruiting trend with the commitment of Matthew Ogunniyi. How can the 2024 recruit help Rutgers?

Rutgers football continues its strong recruiting trend for its 2024 recruiting class with the early May commitment of tight end Matthew Ogunniyi. The three-star prospect from Charles Herbert Flowers High School (Upper Marlboro, MD) is one of two tight ends to commit to Rutgers football’s 2024 recruiting class.

Ogunniyi received Power Five offers from West Virginia and Rutgers to go along with offers from Temple and Texas A&M. Rutgers tight end coach Andrew Aurich recruited the Maryland prospect, providing his verbal commitment on May 1.

[lawrence-related id=26600]

As a junior, Ogunniyi recorded eight receptions for 286 yards and five touchdowns in seven games for the Jaguars. According to 247Sports, Ogunniyi is No. 56 tight end in the nation and the No. 25 overall prospect in Maryland among his recruiting class. Ogunniyi has the potential to be an outstanding addition to the Rutgers offense. The 2024 recruit has a 5.5 recruiting rating (three stars), according to Rivals.com.

Film Study

According to Ogunniyi’s Hudl profile, the junior tight end had the following athleticism stats:

40 Yard Dash 100 Meter Dash 400 Meter Dash
4.56 Seconds 11.4 Seconds 50.8 Seconds

Ogunniyi is an under-the-radar recruit who can make big plays. At 6-foot-5 and 205 pounds, he has the potential to play wide receiver or a tight end at the Big Ten level. Unlike Rutgers’ other 2024 tight-end recruit Monte Keener, Ogunniyi has a ton of speed. He is going to be a match-up nightmare for opposing defenses.

The 2024 prospect has excellent hands and can rack up yardage after the catch. Ogunniyi can line up anywhere on the field, causing favorable mismatches for the offense. Also, Ogunniyi can run multiple route combinations, making him versatile in different offensive sets.

Recruited as a tight end, Ogunniyi might find himself playing wide receiver at the Power Five level. His blocking ability is limited, and his strength is questionable, making him a better wide receiver. Regardless, Ogunniyi’s athleticism will be an offensive weapon for Rutgers football in the future.

Quarterback A.J. Surace is excited with two new Rutgers football commits this week (both are tight ends)

A.J. Surace talks about the new Rutgers football tight ends.

The recent additions at tight end have A.J. Surace excited about the future of the Rutgers football 2024 recruiting class.

The top-ranked quarterback in New Jersey, Surace is a three-star prospect who committed to Rutgers in February over offers from Boston College, Duke, Indiana, Michigan State, Northwestern, Pittsburgh and Tennessee.

On Sunday, Michigan tight end Monte Keener committed to Rutgers, just a little over a week removed from his visit to the program. Then on Monday night, Matthew Ogunniyi committed to Rutgers over offers from Texas A&M and West Virginia among others.

The coaching staff had hoped to land two tight ends in this recruiting cycle and they did a strong job in landing a player in Keener who had two Big Ten offers (Indiana, Minnesota) and Ogunniyi, who is very much under-the-radar despite his recent Texas A&M offer.

“I’m fired up! He’s a great player,” Surace said on Tuesday following the news of Ogunniyi committing to Rutgers.

“The coaches and staff are doing an incredible job recruiting excellent players and people that want to be part of something special.”

The news of Rutgers landing Ogunniyi and Keener, a three-star, is something that was met positively by Surace. Both players have good length and a solid catch radius.

“They are huge targets, terrific athletes and play physical,” Surace said.
