Blue chip edge Matthew Johnson commits to Oregon

Matthew Johnson has committed to Oregon football.

Oregon football got another standout when Matthew Johnson committed on Friday night.

A four-star edge from De La Salle (Concord, California), Johnson is coming off a recent visit to Oregon. On3 ranks him as the No. 254 player in the nation in the 2025 class. He is ranked as the No. 23 player in California.

Johnson checks in at 6-foot-5 and 215 pounds.

In addition to Oregon, he has offers from Arizona State, Cal, Miami, Michigan, Notre Dame and Oregon State.

The news was originally broken by On3 on Friday night. Johnson confirmed the report with a post of his own about his commitment to Oregon:

Johnson had 30 total tackles last year including 14 total tackles. He had 4.5 sacks and created two fumbles.

The commitment of Johnson gives Oregon two players from California who have given a verbal to the program in their 2025 recruiting class.

Four-star quarterback Akili Smith from Lincoln (San Diego, California) has been committed to Oregon since last July.

Ducks land commitment from 4-star EDGE Matthew Johnson

The Oregon Ducks landed a commitment from 4-star EDGE Matthew Johnson on Friday night, their first defensive addition to the 2025 class.

The Oregon Ducks got a nice pickup to kick off the weekend, landing a commitment from 4-star EDGE rusher Matthew Johnson, a blue-chip player from De La Salle.

Johnson was previously predicted to land with the Ducks after taking a visit to Eugene earlier this month.

Johnson is rated by 247Sports as the No. 28 EDGE in the 2025 class, and the No. 363 overall player. He is Oregon’s first defensive addition to the 2025 class, which is ranked as the 12th best in the nation.

Standing at 6-foot-5, 250 pounds, Johnson projects to be the next in a long line of incredibly successful, young edge rushers to excel in Eugene, such as Matay Uiagalelei, Blake Purchase, and Teitum Tuioti. The Ducks also bring in 5-star EDGE Elijah Rushing in the 2024 class as well.

Ducks become heavy favorite to land 4-star edge after visit to Eugene

The Oregon Ducks picked up a pair of predictions to land a blue-chip 4-star EDGE in the 2025 class.

Dan Lanning and the Oregon Ducks held a massive recruiting weekend in Eugene before the dead period started. They hosted some of the top-ranked five-star and four-star athletes in the 2025 and 2026 recruiting classes to open the month of February.

We’re starting to see some positive returns from that weekend as well.

On Sunday afternoon, a couple of predictions came in for the Ducks to land a commitment from one of the blue-chip prospects who was on campus. 247Sports’ analysts Steve Wiltfong and Brandon Huffman placed crystal ball predictions for four-star edge Matthew Johnson to choose Oregon.

Johnson is the No. 363 overall player in the 2025 class and the No. 28 edge.

The Ducks have the No. 12 class in the 2025 cycle, and Johnson would be the first defensive addition.
