Falcons rule out starting offensive lineman with neck injury

Atlanta Falcons offensive lineman Matthew Bergeron has been ruled out with a neck injury.

Atlanta Falcons offensive lineman Matthew Bergeron has been ruled out with an injury he suffered during the third quarter of Sunday’s game against the Seattle Seahawks.

Bergeron was initially evaluated for a concussion and though he cleared protocol, he’s still sidelined due to a neck injury. This is a big loss for the Falcons up front as Bergeron has started all 24 games at left guard for the team since he was selected as a second-round draft pick back in 2023.

He’s allowed just one sack on quarterback Kirk Cousins this season and has only given up 12 pressures to opposing defenses over the same period.

Bergeron’s place, at least for now, will be taken by backup left guard Kyle Hinton, who is in the midst of his second season as a Falcon. Hinton has seen action for the Falcons in the past, playing 64 snaps on special teams and 63 snaps on the offensive side of the ball.

Atlanta will look to make a comeback as it trails Seattle, 31-14 early on in the fourth quarter in Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

Falcons offensive lineman named to NFL.com’s All-Breakout Team

#Falcons left guard Matthew Bergeron was named to NFL.com’s 2024 All-Breakout Team

For the second year in a row, the Atlanta Falcons surprised the rest of the NFL with their first-round draft selection. After taking running back Bijan Robinson with the No. 8 pick in the 2023 draft, the team added quarterback Michael Penix Jr. in that same slot in 2024.

While these two selections received the most attention, the Falcons made notable moves in the second round of those same drafts. In 2023, they traded up for offensive lineman Matthew Bergeron before pulling off a trade for defensive lineman Ruke Orhorhoro this past April.

Neither pick was super popular at the time, but Bergeron proved the doubters wrong with an excellent rookie campaign. Despite primarily playing tackle at Syracuse, Bergeron had no problem starting at left guard for the Falcons last season.

The second-year lineman has a promising future and people are starting to take notice. NFL.com’s Bucky Brooks listed Bergeron as a starting guard on his 2024 Offensive All-Breakout Team:

The athletic interior blocker is poised to shine in a revamped offense under new coordinator Zac Robinson that makes the most of his talents as a people mover at the point of attack. Bergeron’s movement skills should lead to more space for running back Bijan Robinson on runs while providing sufficient protection for Kirk Cousins to attack from the pocket.

As Robinson builds a game plan that enables the Falcons to showcase their skill players on the perimeter, the football world could come to better appreciate the work Bergeron does between the tackles in 2024. — Bucky Brooks, NFL.com

Bergeron filled the last remaining weak spot along the team’s offensive line. If he can continue to improve this season, the Falcons offense has a chance to take off in a way we haven’t seen in a few years.

Center Drew Dalman is another player who’s developed nicely over the last couple of seasons in Atlanta. Former Falcons head coach Arthur Smith certainly had some flaws, but you can’t say he wasn’t good at developing young offensive linemen.

Panthers were also targeting OL Matthew Bergeron with 39th overall pick

The Panthers got their guy in WR Jonathan Mingo with this year’s 39th pick. But they also had eyes on OL Matthew Bergeron, who the Falcons swiped up one spot earlier.

Carolina Panthers general manager Scott Fitterer doesn’t get nervous often. He said so himself in the third and final episode of “Panthers Blueprint,” which released on Tuesday.

But he did also admit that things got a little dicey right before his second pick hit the clock earlier this spring.

The latest behind-the-scenes look into the Panthers’ offseason gave us a glance into the war room during the 2023 NFL draft. And as the second began, Carolina targeted three players—including Ole Miss wide receiver Jonathan Mingo and Syracuse offensive lineman Matthew Bergeron.

But right before their turn came around at No. 39, the Atlanta Falcons jumped into the 38th spot in a trade with the Indianapolis Colts and swiped up the latter of those two prospects.

Despite Atlanta’s move (and assistant general manager Dan Morgan’s spicy reaction), Carolina got “their guy” at that point in Mingo. Plus, the Panthers might’ve done a little intra-division sniping themselves, as the New Orleans Saints were rumored to have eyes on the big-bodied wideout as well.

The NFC South—where great minds think alike?

The Atlanta Falcons’ entire 2023 draft class is now under contract after the team signed second-round pick Matthew Bergeron on Tuesday. The Syracuse offensive lineman played left tackle in college, but the Falcons will likely move him over to the guard position.

Atlanta traded up six spots in the second round to draft Bergeron at pick No. 38 overall. After letting Elijah Wilkinson walk in free agency, there’s a good chance Bergeron starts for the Falcons at left guard this season.

The team also selected running back Bijan Robinson, defensive end Zach Harrison, cornerback Clark Phillips III, offensive lineman Jovaughn Gwyn and safety DeMarcco Hellams.

This inside look at how the Cowboys debated a first-round pick was so cool

The Cowboys showed fans how they came to making their first-round pick in the draft.

The Dallas Cowboys have already shared one look at their draft room over the weekend, and now they’ve given a breakdown of how they made their first-round pick.

A new video shows Dallas’ front office debating whether or not to take Michigan defensive tackle Mazi Smith and Syracuse offensive lineman with the 26th pick in Thursday’s start to the 2023 NFL Draft.

Will McClay, the Cowboys’ vice president of player personnel, advocates for taking Smith with the pick, and that’s what the team wound up doing.

They seemed happy with having both players available, but it’s the Michigan defender that got his name called for Dallas in the first round.

It’s just not common for an NFL team to show the decision process in making a draft pick, and it’s clear that Bergeron had plenty of fans in the league since he went early in the second round to the Atlanta Falcons.

It’s really fascinating to see this close a look at the draft room in such a pivotal moment, so kudos to Dallas for providing a glimpse.

2023 NFL draft: Players selected with picks Colts traded away

These prospects were selected with picks the Colts traded away.

The Indianapolis Colts concluded the 2023 NFL draft with 12 selections, and not all of them originally belonged to the team. Conversely, there were some selections made by other teams with picks originally owned by the Colts.

There were five of those picks, to be exact. At one point or another, for however long, there were five selections made with picks that were owned by the Colts.

Here’s a quick look at which prospects went with those picks:

2023 NFL draft grades: Falcons pick OL Matthew Bergeron at No. 38 overall

2023 NFL draft grades: Atlanta Falcons pick Syracuse offensive lineman Matthew Bergeron at No. 38 overall in the second round, via @DillySanders

The Atlanta Falcons are leaning heavily into the run game as they select offensive lineman Matthew Bergeron out of Syracuse.

After having a run-heavy game last season and then drafting running back Bijan Robinson in the top 10 last night, they look to someone who has a strength in run blocking. Bergeron is not slouch in the passing game either. Pro Football Focus has given him a grade in the eighties in each of the past two seasons.

He’s someone that got whispers of going at the end of the first round, like all huge and athletic offensive lineman do. He also has experience on both sides of the offensive line, as he’ll be able to grow with the roster and move around to fill needs. It’s a little higher than I would have gone, but it’s still a good pick.

Grade: B

10 prospects the Eagles should consider trading up for on Day 2 of NFL draft

We’re looking at ten prospects the Philadelphia Eagles should consider trading up for on Day 2 of the NFL draft

The NFL draft is full of elite and dynamic offensive talent, but the biggest key to building the perfect roster is selecting players that fit an urgent need.

The draft doesn’t end in Round 1, and with multiple Day 2 picks, Philadelphia could look to land the best available players in both rounds or trade up to secure an impact player.

The Eagles’ roster is stacked at most positions, but Friday’s picks offer an opportunity for Howie Roseman to trade up for a dynamic or impact player.

How the draft board could break in front of the Dolphins’ second-round pick

Who the teams before Miami could look at, and who they could leave them left with.

The Miami Dolphins are set to begin their 2023 NFL draft with the pick No. 51, followed by No. 84, each scheduled for Friday night. With a tight end board that remained intact minus just one player, the Dolphins are 20 picks away from landing one of the remaining top five at that particular position if they chose to go that route.

Miami could also consider an offensive lineman, with both guards and tackles potentially available, so general manager Chris Grier has a number of options.

The Pittsburgh Steelers being the second round tonight with pick No. 31, and they could be targeting a cornerback or an offensive lineman themselves. Cornerback Joey Porter Jr. is a homerun pick there.

Arizona, who had moved down and up the board last night, could be a candidate to move down yet again. Should they stick around, they too are a team that can go with a cornerback or the defensive side of the ball overall.

Quarterback Will Levis has been the fall story of the first round, and with a veteran in Jared Goff already in Detroit, the 34th overall slot could work for the Kentucky Wildcat. If not Detroit, the market could crash on Levis, and it’s anyone’s guess.

The Colts are at pick No. 35 and should be a team that protects their first-round pick, Anthony Richardson. What would make sense would be an offensive lineman, and what would make even more sense would be another Florida Gator. O’Cyrus Torrence could be a solid play or another lineman that the Colts could add to an already solid unit. TCU’s Steven Avila, Syracuse’s Matthew Bergeron and center John Michael Schmitz of Minnesota are quality offensive linemen as well, not to mention Ohio State’s Dawand Jones and Cody Mauch out of North Dakota State.

Next up would be the Los Angeles Rams at pick No. 36, and defense could be the way to go, whether it’s a pass-rusher, linebacker or cornerback. Of the next few picks, rounding the top 40, the Raiders could select a tight end and could be a Michael Mayer or Luke Musgrave destination. Should they go with defense, it could only help Miami’s cause.

The Panthers would be wise to target a pass-catcher themselves, but a receiver could be a better play than a tight end for first overall pick Bryce Young.

If the Raiders were a team that could select one of those tight ends, the New Orleans Saints are another. Mayer, Musgrave and even blocking behemoth Darnell Washington could be candidates here for this selection. Derek Carr, now a Saint, was used to a dominant tight end in Darren Waller in Las Vegas the last few seasons.

Safely speaking, two tight ends could be gone at this point, with ten picks to go until Miami’s. Tennesee could be a secondary Levis landing spot, and if not, think skill position player here, but likely a receiver or a running back to be the heir apparent to King Derrick Henry.

Green Bay has a number of needs on offense at pick No. 45, tight end included, and could be a destination for guys like Sam LaPorta or Tucker Kraft. The Packers are a team to watch if you’re worried about this position.

At No. 46, the New England Patriots can build on a solid first round and pivot to the offensive line, following taking care of a cornerback need in round one. Avila, Bergeron, Schmitz, Jones and Mauch are names that could work for New England.

The Washington Commanders follow at pick No. 47, and yet another team could be in the tight-end market as well as an offensive lineman. This is a team that could spoil some Miami fans’ nights.

At No. 48, the Lions are up again, and with arguable reaches in round one, albeit strong prospects in Jahmyr Gibbs at No. 12 and Jack Campbell at No. 18, it’s anyone’s guess here. If Levis is available here and not a Lion, at this point, it’s a downfall for the record books.

The Steelers and Tampa Bay Buccaneers are each offensive line needy, so the grouping of Avila, Bergeron, Schmitz, Jones and Mauch are names to watch out for, of whom is remaining.

Then we get to the Dolphins, and, with all the names mentioned, the realistic guess would be a choice of Washington, Kraft, LaPorta or the remaining available offensive lineman, should all of these tight ends go in addition to Musgrave and Mayer.

If the top five remaining tight ends are selected, the best of the remaining blockers, perhaps Bergeron or Schmitz, could be intriguing for Miami, both able to provide help on the interior.

Those are the five names Miami should either have to choose from or be left with, in a good sense. Should all five be at their disposal, a trade down to in-between picks 56-61 could even net them an extra fourth-round pick on Day 3, and still land them one of these prospects.

Should Miami elect to trade down, the Giants, Jaguars, Bears and Cowboys are solid suitors with their draft positions. Trading up could simply cost too much, as Miami is limited in trade assets, and dealing a player could be too complicated with salary implications.

Nevertheless, Miami will be in a great position to leave the second round with a quality player who could be an immediate help to their team, or even pull a deal to even help them further down the line.
