Henry Hasselbeck, a name to know in 2023, releases junior highlight reel

Two weeks ago Hasselbeck shared his Junior highlight reel on Huddle.

It can be difficult for some high school quarterbacks to stand out. Sharing a last name with a famous Pro Bowl QB certainly doesn’t hurt, though. Just ask Arch Manning, who was the No. 1 overall recruit in the class of 2023 and possesses a ton of talent—but also had the benefit of the Manning last name.

While he doesn’t have quite the same starpower, Xaverian Brothers (Mass.) quarterback Henry Hasselbeck should also get a boost in this department. Henry is the son of former Seahawks QB Matt Hasselbeck – and he’s preparing to choose where he will play his college football soon.

Two weeks ago, Hasselbeck shared his junior highlight reel on Hudl. And now, looks ahead to his senior campaign under center.

Hasselbeck (6-foot-3, 170 pounds) has a three-star rating from 247Sports and is ranked No. 49 among quarterbacks in the class of 2024.

So far, he has offers from Boston College, Bowling Green, Dartmouth, Georgia Tech, Pitt, UAB and Western Michigan.

Two former NFL QBs slam Patriots’ handling of Mac Jones

A couple of former quarterbacks are not happy with the Patriots’ handling of Mac Jones.

The New England Patriots looked anemic offensively in their regular season opener against the Miami Dolphins, and one thing in particular that has irked at least a couple of former NFL quarterbacks has been the team’s handling of Mac Jones.

On NFL Countdown, ahead of the Patriots’ Week 2 matchup with the Pittsburgh Steelers, ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reported an unnamed former NFL quarterback saying that Jones ‘went from first class’ under Josh McDaniels to ‘pre-K with this team.’

It’s hard to argue considering Jones looks nothing like the quarterback that earned a Pro Bowl nod in his rookie season. Former three-time Pro Bowl quarterback Matt Hasselbeck spoke on the issues as well on the NFL Countdown panel, and he didn’t hold back.

“I know you’re defensive gurus — fine,” said Hasselbeck, via CBS Boston. “But you don’t understand what it looks like and feels like for the quarterback. The hardest thing for a quarterback on the road especially is third-and-6 or more so what did they do? They made it complicated.

“…You did this to yourself, Patriots coaching staff. You did this to yourself. So stop trying to prove how smart you are. Simplify. This guy played — he was the best rookie quarterback in the NFL last year, because he had training wheels on most of the time, and he did a lot. He played really well. There’s nothing wrong with that. You don’t have to prove how much you know. Make it simpler.”

Things have felt a bit weird in New England with coach Bill Belichick opting to turn former defensive coordinator Matt Patricia into the offensive play-caller, instead of hiring a more experienced assistant in that particular role.

It’s too late to turn back at this point, and the Patriots are going to have to work through their issues if they have any hopes of a successful season.

The road for the team won’t get any easier with Sunday’s matchup featuring a meeting with the Pittsburgh Steelers’ vaunted defense. Then they’ll move on to a pair of tough outings against the Baltimore Ravens and Green Bay Packers.

Shaun Alexander to be inducted in Seahawks Ring of Honor

Alexander will officially be honored during Seattle’s home game against the Arizona Cardinals on October 16.

The Seattle Seahawks will be taking time to honor another one of their legendary players during the 2022 season. On Thursday it was announced that running back Shaun Alexander would become the newest member inducted to the Seahawks Ring of Honor.

Alexander will officially be honored during Seattle’s home game against the Arizona Cardinals on October 16.

Last season the Seahawks inducted Matt Hasselbeck and Mike Holmgren into the Ring of Honor. It is only fitting for Alexander to join his former quarterback and head coach a year later.

While the Pete Carroll/Legion of Boom era of the Seahawks brought the franchise to the championship mountaintop, it should not be forgotten how formidable the early-2000’s Seahawks were. Behind the legs of Shaun Alexander, the Seahawks won the NFC West four times and made five total trips to the playoffs.

Of course, the crowning achievement during Alexander’s tenure was capturing the League MVP award in 2005 for his sublime season. Alexander rushed for 1,880 yards and set a then-NFL record with 27 rushing touchdowns.

Alexander was only the second running back the Seahawks ever spent a first round draft selection on, and he rewarded the organization handsomely. During his tenure, ranging from 2000-2007, Alexander scored 100 career touchdowns. He joins Steve Largent as the only members of the organization to accomplish such a feat.

ESPN: Seahawks had the worst offseason in the NFL

The Seattle Seahawks had the worst offseason in the NFL, according to Bill Barnwell at ESPN.

[mm-video type=playlist id=01eqbycpfe4qgv9nf6 player_id=none image=https://seahawkswire.usatoday.com/wp-content/plugins/mm-video/images/playlist-icon.png]

The Seattle Seahawks had the worst offseason in the NFL, according to Bill Barnwell at ESPN.

Among the things that Barnwell lists Seattle got wrong were Will Dissly’s incomprehensible new contract, using an early-round draft pick on a running back and trading the best player in the history of their franchise.

“You’ve probably heard about the Russell Wilson trade by now. One week after Pete Carroll publicly said that the Seahawks had “no intention” of trading Wilson, the Seahawks sent their franchise quarterback to the Broncos for Drew Lock, Shelby Harris, Noah Fant and five draft picks, including two first-rounders. The Seahawks simply didn’t get enough for a superstar in the prime of his career, and while I held out some hope that they would then go after a viable replacement under center, they’re about to head into 2022 with Lock and Geno Smith as their two quarterbacks.”

As for what they should have done differently, Barnwell was to the point:

“Well, they could have kept Wilson and fired Carroll. If the relationship between quarterback and head coach had deteriorated to the point where one had to go, Seattle made the wrong choice.”

That’s a heck of a hard-to-swallow pill, but he’s right on the money.

Based on the reactions we’ve read this offseason, some fans have gracefully accepted that the Seahawks are going into a transitional phase and will have reasonable expectations this coming season. Others seem to be in denial about just how important Russell Wilson was for this franchise and how ugly things may get without him around to patch things up.

We try to take am honest agnosticism into any season and not rush to judgement before a team has played a single snap. That said, Barnwell isn’t the only analyst we trust who says the Seahawks have gotten worse than any other club in the leauge since the 2021 campaign ended.

Not long after the Wilson/Denver trade, Pro Football Focus came out with an updated offseason improvement index. The Broncos were at the top of that list, while the Seahawks were dead last.

Football is an exceedingly complex game, especially at this level. Some things are easier to read into than others, though.

Until they find their next Russell Wilson – or more realistically their next Matt Hasselbeck – things are going to be tough. Whether or not Pete Carroll’s staff survives this transition will depend almost entirely on how long it takes for that search to bear fruit and how many games he can win in the meantime.

Tim Hasselbeck predicts Russell Wilson will be starting for Steelers in Week 1

If you’re already tired of hearing about potential Russell Wilson trade scenarios, it’s going to be a very long offseason.

If you’re already tired of hearing about potential Russell Wilson trade scenarios it’s going to be a very long offseason. Even though the Seahawks say they have no intention of trading Wilson and their franchise QB says he wants to stay and win more Super Bowls in Seattle, several teams around the NFL will be in the market for a new starter this year, so the speculation won’t stop until training camp.

The latest idea comes from former Seahawks quarterback Matt Hasselbeck’s brother Tim, an ESPN analyst who is predicting that Wilson will be starting for the Steelers in Week 1.

Seahawks great Matt Hasselbeck shares advice for young athletes

Seahawks great Matt Hasselbeck says the lesson is for young athletes to keep working and sometimes the right coach may find you.

The LA Rams finally got over the hump and won the Super Bowl thanks in part to a series of high-leverage trades, picking up key pieces like Jalen Ramsey, Von Miller and Matthew Stafford along the way. The two most critical elements of their Super Bowl victory over the Bengals still came via the draft, though. Defensive tackle Aaron Donald slipped to the Rams at No. 13 overall in 2014 and he’s now in the conversation with names like Lawrence Taylor and Mean Joe Greene for the best defender of all time.

The real steal didn’t come far from the Seahawks’ homebase, though. Eastern Washington’s Cooper Kupp fell to the Rams in the third round of the 2017 draft and he’s coming off arguably the greatest season for a wide receiver ever. Kupp was instrumental in LA’s championship-winning drive and posted 92 yards and two touchdowns. For his trouble, Kupp won the Super Bowl MVP trophy.

Credit at least in part goes to Cincinnati’s head coach Zac Taylor, who helped the Rams discover Kupp when he was still on Sean McVay’s staff.

Where Seahawks Super Bowl quarterback matchups rank all time

CBS Sports ranked the Super Bowl quarterback matchups of all time – here’s where Matt Hasselbeck and Russell Wilson of the Seahawks landed.

This year’s Super Bowl pitting Matt Stafford of the Los Angeles Rams against Joe Burrow of the Cincinnati Bengals is now less than a week away. The battle between opposing quarterbacks in the big game has always been interesting to watch and this season will be no different.

Ahead of the contest, over at CBS Sports ranked every Super Bowl quarterback matchup in history. Below is where the Seahawks’ three appearances landed in the rankings.

No. 15. Tom Brady vs. Russell Wilson, Super Bowl XLIX

“The 37-year-old Brady was in the midst of a career resurgence,” writes. “After a decade without a ring, Brady finally won his fourth Super Bowl after getting the better of Seattle’s ‘Legion of Boom’ defense. Brady also out-dueled Wilson, who was just completing his third season in Seattle. Since that game, Wilson has blossomed into one of the NFL’s best quarterbacks. He’s made the Pro Bowl in each of the last four seasons, and is coming off of a career-high 40 touchdown season.”

No. 16. Russell Wilson vs. Peyton Manning, Super Bowl XLVIII

“While Wilson was coming off of his first Pro Bowl selection, Manning entered Super Bowl XLVIII fresh off of his fifth and final MVP award,” notes. “Had these two both been in their primes, this one would have been a top-10 matchup. That being said, No. 16 isn’t too shabby.”

No. 32. Ben Roethlisberger vs. Matt Hasselbeck, Super Bowl XL

“Though he threw for just 123 yards, Roethlisberger became the youngest quarterback to win the Super Bowl,” DeArdo starts. “His counterpart, Hasselbeck, was bedeviled by costly penalties and an ill-advised interception late in the game. Along with helping lead Seattle to its first Super Bowl, Hasselbeck was a three-time Pro Bowler who retired as the Seahawks’ all-time leading passer. ”

Super Bowl LVI is set to kick off Sunday, Feb. 13 at 12:30 p.m. PT.
