Mike McDaniel explains why Dolphins fired OL coach Matt Applebaum

He lasted just one season.

The Miami Dolphins made a number of changes to their coaching staff this offseason, but only one happened on the offensive side of the ball.

Head coach Mike McDaniel fired offensive line coach Matt Applebaum after just one season in South Florida, replacing him with former Denver Broncos offensive line coach Butch Barry.

The news came as a bit of a surprise, considering the injuries that the unit worked through the season, but McDaniel took some time at this week’s combine to explain the decision.

“The way the staff was orchestrated the previous year, I really needed to get more offensive coordinator work out of Frank Smith and he was devoted a little too much to the offensive line,” McDaniel said (transcribed by the Miami Herald). “And I needed more, selfishly, to alleviate some stuff off my plate; and so that was the motivating factor to make that move, was to facilitate Frank Smith being able to appropriate his time more as a coordinator and less in the offensive line room.”

While McDaniel is the one calling the plays, the Dolphins still rely on Smith to work on different aspects of the offense both throughout the game and during the week. If his time is being used as a second offensive line coach, he’s not able to do some of the other things that could benefit Miami more.

Former Dolphins’ OL coach returns to college job after 2022

He spent just one year in Miami.

After the 2022 season, the Miami Dolphins moved on from defensive coordinator Josh Boyer as well as four positional coaches, including offensive line coach Matt Applebaum.

Applebaum joined Mike McDaniel’s staff in 2022, but after a season that was filled with injuries along the line, the two sides parted ways.

Now, according to ESPN’s Pete Thamel, Applebaum is rejoining Boston College as their offensive line coach once again. He spent 2020 and 2021 with the team before making the jump to the pro game last year.

Miami has already replaced Applebaum this offseason, hiring Butch Barry to coach up the line.

Report: Dolphins hire Butch Barry as new OL coach

He’s worked with Mike McDaniel before.

The Miami Dolphins are continuing their offseason moves to the coaching staff after firing defensive coordinator Josh Boyer, offensive line coach Matt Applebaum and three defensive positional coaches.

On Wednesday, Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald reported that the Dolphins are hiring Butch Barry to be their next offensive line coach.

Barry spent the last year as the offensive line coach for the Denver Broncos, but he worked with Mike McDaniel in 2021 in San Francisco where he was the assistant offensive line coach to Chris Foerster.

He also had stops in Tampa Bay and Green Bay prior to their time together.

Report: Dolphins part ways with OL coach Matt Applebaum

He’s the only offensive coach to go so far.

The Miami Dolphins have had an eventful offseason already, despite being eliminated just two weeks ago.

Miami fired defensive coordinator Josh Boyer, and three of his assistant coaches at the end of the season. Assistant Patrick Surtain left for a job with Florida State. Now, Outkick’s Armando Salguero is reporting that the Dolphins have parted ways with offensive line coach Matt Applebaum.

The Dolphins have struggled to find consistency coaching the offensive line, as they will be looking for their 10th new coach for the group in nine years.

While Miami’s big bodies up front were improved from the 2021 season, injuries seemed to slow them down. Terron Armstead, Liam Eichenberg and Austin Jackson, who were all projected to start the season, dealt with significant ailments at points. Jackson ended up playing only two games.

The Dolphins could benefit from consistency from that coaching position

Dolphins GM Chris Grier endorses Michael Deiter at NFL annual meeting

The GM believes he’s a talented player.

The epicenter of the 2022 NFL offseason has arguably been in Florida, and Monday morning in Palm Beach, league coaches and general managers gathered for breakfast at their annual meeting.

It was a buffet type of a day for the media, as tidbits were shared from coaches and executives alike, including Mike McDaniel and Chris Grier, who provided several offerings for Dolphins fans to feast on.

Grier had mentioned to reporters that he’s received inquiries on multiple players, namely wide receiver DeVante Parker and versatile offensive lineman Michael Deiter.  While Miami’s wide receiver room has gotten an upgrade compared to a B-12 shot, it makes a player like Parker a bit more expendable. Tyreek Hill was acquired last week from Kansas City, Cedrick Wilson, Jr. was signed as a free agent and Preston Williams was re-signed. These players join the NFL rookie receptions record holder in Jaylen Waddle.

Then there’s the offensive line, which, although improved vastly with the signing of free agent gem Terron Armstead and guard Connor Williams, could still use some work.

The right tackle sport seems to be headed for a two-man battle between Austin Jackson and Liam Eichenberg this summer. The young linemen are used to a competition of sorts, as Jackson’s USC Trojans and Eichenberg’s Notre Dame Fighting Irish are among college football’s best historical rivalries.

The center position is a role that’s been a rare question mark for Miami after years of a lineage that included some outstanding anchors of the offensive line. Deiter, who was drafted in the third round of the 2019 draft as a guard out of Wisconsin, has moved around the line in his first few seasons. He started 15 games as a rookie, yet 2020 was a year of change on the line with a trio of rookies coming into the equation.

It was in 2021 that Deiter was moved to center and played well as the team’s starter in the season’s first three games. After a “freak injury,” as described by Grier, Deiter finished the final five games of the season as the Dolphins’ center.

Looking at an offensive line that should see Armstead and Williams on the left side, and Robert Hunt penciled in at right guard, Deiter has the opportunity to run with Grier’s endorsement today and work to become the latest in what has truly been a position of greatness in Miami history.

From Jim Langer to Dwight Stephenson to Tim Ruddy to Mike Pouncey, perhaps Deiter is primed to take his place in the pantheon of centers in South Florida.

He certainly seems to have the support of his general manager, and now he gets an offensive coaching staff rife with offensive line teachers, including Frank Smith. Smith was Armstead’s assistant offensive line coach while he was a rookie with the New Orleans Saints, and the Dolphins’ big catch cited a reunion with coach as one of the main draws for Miami. Don’t forget that they also hired former Boston College offensive line coach Matt Applebaum.

Smith and Applebaum’s knowledge and coaching mixed with McDaniel’s schematics of the line and overall running game should mesh with Deiter perfectly. It’s another box that may just be checked off in terms of a necessity in fixing Miami’s greatest weakness from the past few seasons.

Dolphins OL coach Matt Applebaum explains what it takes to be successful in their scheme

It takes a certain type of offensive lineman.

It’s not a hot take to say that the Miami Dolphins had one of the worst offensive line units in football in 2021.

The unit allowed the most quarterback pressures (235) and 11th-most sacks (40) of any in the league, while the running backs rushed for the second-fewest yards per carry behind them (3.5).

Their play impacted every part of the offense and was a big reason the Dolphins missed the postseason once again.

Now, with a new coaching staff, Miami is expected to implement a zone blocking scheme on the line that will be a substantial change from what they used in 2021. Offensive line coach Matt Applebaum has been brought in from Boston College to help teach that system to the big guys up front.

This week, Applebaum explained exactly what’s needed to have success in their new scheme.

“There’s a certain level of athleticism needed to play in the run scheme we’re talking about,” Applebaum said, via. Miami Herald. “Like a twitchiness, suddenness, ability to bend, change directions. You obviously need a certain level of size, too. There’s a premium on a certain level of athlete. There’s a mental processing that I think is important regardless of scheme. And a physical toughness.

“This is a scheme where you have to try to get after your opponent consistently throughout the play. It’s not the kind of thing where you can wall a guy off and the play is over for you. That ball can go a lot of places and it happens later on in the play so you’ve really got to strain.”

The scheme change will be good for the group, but they’ll also need fresh faces in there. Going into another season with the same starting five would be a mistake. They’ll need to add a player or two through free agency or the draft for fans to start feeling comfortable heading into the regular season.

Report: Dolphins expected to hire Boston College OL coach

There aren’t many open spots left on this staff now.

[mm-video type=playlist id=01eqbwhebtqp7ahdjt player_id=none image=https://dolphinswire.usatoday.com/wp-content/plugins/mm-video/images/playlist-icon.png]

The Miami Dolphins are doing their best to improve their offensive coaching staff after a year that produced lackluster results, and they are doing so bringing in a solid offensive line coach from the college game.

According to ESPN’S Pete Thamel, the Dolphins are expected to hire Boston College’s Matt Applebaum to be the team’s offensive line coach under new head coach Mike McDaniel.

Applebaum has spent the last two seasons at Boston College where he had multiple All-ACC honorees along his offensive line.

Before Boston College, Applebaum coached at Towson University and Davidson College. He also worked with at the NFL level with Washington and Jacksonville prior to joining the college ranks.

Miami’s offensive line was horrendous in 2021 with multiple members of the group near the top of the league in pressures allowed. While there may some additions in the offseason, Applebaum would be expected to help institute McDaniel’s scheme in zone blocking. That alone could improve some things for the offensive line.

With the Dolphins hiring wide receivers coach Wes Welker, tight ends coach Jon Embree, and retaining running backs coach Eric Studesville, most of the team’s offensive assistants are in place for the 2022 season.
