Hello and welcome to round two of our Favorite Spartans of All Time Tournament. The name is still terrible (and probably changed from the first round) but it’s still a pandemic out there and frankly, you and I have better things to worry about than thinking up a snappy name for this bracket challenge.

We had some upsets in round one, but the chalk held pretty steady across the board. That sets up a ton of big matchups in round two.

Let’s not waste any time and get into voting. Today we start with the Magic Johnson region.

Cassius Winston is the second two-time consensus All-American in MSU history

Michigan State point guard Cassius Winston became the second two-time consensus All-American in MSU history.

When it was announced that Michigan State point guard Cassius Winston was a consensus Second-Team All-American for the second straight year, it cemented another piece of history for Winston as he joined Mateen Cleaves as just the second player in MSU history to earn that honor multiple years in a row.

Cleaves was a consensus Second-Team All-American in 1998 and First-Team in 1999 and 2000, winning the title in 2000.

The NCAA’s ‘consensus’ All-American teams are based on the voting from the Associated Press, Sporting News, United States Basketball Writers Association, and the National Association of Basketball Coaches. Winston was voted Second-Team by all four voting bodies. He did earn two First-Team selections last season.

Winston also set more history this year when he passed Mateen Cleaves to become the All-Time leader in assists for the Big Ten Conference.

Michigan State honored the 2000 NCAA Championship team during the Maryland game. Watch some clips here including Mateen Cleaves speech.

Michigan State Basketball honored the 2000 NCAA Championship team during halftime of the Maryland game. Mateen Cleaves, Morris Peterson, Mat Ishbia, Al Anagonye, and Adam Ballinger were in attendance. Antonio Smith was also in attendance, although he left the team one year before they were able to win the title. Cleaves spoke to the crowd on behalf of the team to celebrate the occasion.

Check out some clips of this ceremony below and Mateen Cleaves speech:

Always great to see Spartan legends come back to the campus in East Lansing. Mateen Cleaves was very emotional during this ceremony. Who can blame him? This was a special team that will live on forever in the hearts of all MSU basketball fans.

That MSU team beat every single team in the 2000 NCAA Tournament by double digits, including the Championship game, where they knocked off Florida 89-76. It was absolute dominance and also the last time a Big Ten team won the National Championship.
