Former Husker lands at West Coast mid-major

A former Cornhusker has found his next program.

Former Nebraska Cornhuskers forward Matar Diop has found his next destination. The native of Senegal will continue his career with Loyola Marymount of the West Coast Conference.

College basketball insider Jon Rothstein first reported the news on Thursday morning.

The Los Angeles based university and program is coming off a 12-19 season which included a 5-11 record in WCC play.

Diop in his only season with the Cornhuskers, played in 19 games while totaling 16 points, 17 rebounds, five assists, three blocks, and three steals in the process. He also had 11 personal fouls.

The 6-foot-10 forward originally committed to the Huskers in the 2023 recruiting class over offers from Arizona State, Seton Hall, and Ole Miss.

Nebraska forward Matar Diop becomes latest Husker to enter portal

Another Cornhusker has entered the transfer portal.

The Nebraska Cornhuskers men’s basketball program has seen another player enter the transfer portal.

This time, freshman forward Matar Diop has decided to move on from the program, entering the portal after just one season with the program.

In 19 games this season, the native of Senegal averaged 3.7 minutes per contest while averaging 0.8 points and 0.8 rebounds per game. He was 6-for-12 from the field this past season, including 1-for-2 from three-point range. He also made 3-of-9 free throw attempts. On the boards, Diop totaled 17 rebounds while also recording five assists, three blocks, and three steals.

Diop is the fifth Husker to enter the portal this offseason, joining Ramel Lloyd Jr, Eli Rice, Blaise Keita, and C.J. Wilcher.

Diop, who played for Keystone Athletic Academy in Erie, Pennsylvania, was a late addition to the Huskers 2023 recruiting class. He announced his commitment to the program last July. He also received offers from Arizona State, Seton Hall, and Ole Miss.

The Nebraska men’s basketball team filled one of their two open scholarship spots for the 2023-24 season.

The Nebraska men’s basketball team filled one of their two open scholarship spots for the 2023-24 season. Keystone Athletic Academy forward Matar Diop announced his commitment to the class of 2023 on Sunday afternoon.

The native from Senegal chose the Cornhuskers over Arizona State, Seton Hall, and Ole Miss, among others. He didn’t start playing organized basketball until he was 13 years old.

Reports state that Diop could not make a recruiting decision until this week when he was academically cleared. Nebraska now has one scholarship available for the 2023 class.
