Masters 2024 first round delayed by inclement weather on Thursday

For the third year in a row the Masters has been impacted by inclement weather.

AUGUSTA, Ga. — For the third year in a row the Masters has been negatively impacted by inclement weather.

Augusta National Golf Club announced on Wednesday night that forecasted weather during Thursday’s first round had delayed not only the opening of the patron gate but the round itself. The club sent an update shortly after 7:30 a.m. ET on Thursday morning that noted the first round would start at 10:30 a.m. ET, instead of at 8 a.m. ET as originally planned. Patron gates open at 9:30 a.m. ET and the Honorary Starters Ceremony featuring Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player and Tom Watson will start at 10:10 a.m. ET.

Rain has now fallen during 48 of the 88 tournaments, including each of the last six. Eight days of play have been postponed, but four days were made up by scheduling 36 holes in one day in 1936, 1938, 1939 and most recently 2003. The last Monday finish due to weather occurred in 1983.

Last year inclement weather suspended play for 21 minutes on Friday before it was ultimately suspended for the day later in the afternoon. Play was once again suspended on Saturday afternoon due to more heavy rain.

Thursday’s forecast calls for morning thunderstorms with a 95% chance of rain, upwards of 20 mph winds and a high of 80 degrees.

Photos: Wind, rain and cold temperatures take over Augusta National on Saturday of the 2023 Masters

Saturday’s weather is going to test the field at the 2023 Masters.

The docile weather conditions the field played through on Thursday and most of Friday are gone and have been replaced by cold temperatures, wind and rain. Play was eventually suspended Friday afternoon due to inclement weather conditions. If you’ve yet to see them, check out these photos of the fallen trees that caused quite a scare.

Saturday at the 2023 Masters is going to be brutal for the players and patrons but really fun for the fans at home. Augusta National Golf Club should hold up perfectly in the rain and hopefully that means no more weather delays — fingers crossed.

Let’s take a look at some of the best photos from a wet and breezy Augusta National on Saturday of the 2023 Masters.

‘Inclement weather conditions and safety concerns’ suspends Masters practice round Tuesday at Augusta National

The forecast doesn’t look good for Tuesday in Augusta.

AUGUSTA, Ga. — After beautiful weather over the weekend and into Monday, Tuesday’s practice rounds were cut short ahead of the the 2022 Masters Tournament.

“Due to inclement weather conditions and safety concerns, Augusta National Golf Club was forced to suspend play, and subsequently, evacuate the grounds at 10:55 a.m. ET for Tuesday (April 5) practice round,” according to a release from Augusta National. “The current forecast will not permit the reopening of the grounds.”

Those who had tickets for Tuesday’s practice round will be guaranteed the opportunity to purchase the same tickets next year, with more information to come in May.

“The safety of everyone at Augusta National was the determining factor in the decision to suspend Tuesday’s practice round and evacuate the grounds,” said Fred Ridley, Chairman of Augusta National Golf Club and the Masters Tournament. “We share in the disappointment of our patrons though, we look forward to welcoming them back next year.”

The Weather Channel forecasts scattered storms in the early afternoon that will develop into strong thunderstorms in the evening, with “damaging winds, large hail and possibly a tornado.”

Scattered thunderstorms are also expected on Wednesday, when the first Masters Par 3 Contest since 2019 is scheduled to begin at noon. Thursday’s forecast for the opening round calls for party cloudy conditions with rain in the early morning.
