Continued field goal struggles spell trouble for Packers K Mason Crosby

Packers K Mason Crosby missed another field goal on Sunday. A big rebound is necessary for the veteran kicker down the stretch in 2021.

The Green Bay Packers need to take a long, hard look at their kicker situation after the 2021 season. The Packers usually bring in competition every offseason, but they made need to give it even more attention following Mason Crosby’s recent struggles. The veteran missed his eighth field goal of the season during Sunday’s three-point loss to the Minnesota Vikings.

The best thing for a kicker is continuity, but Crosby hasn’t had that luxury working with two different long snappers and holders since the start of training camp. Through the course of the 2021 season, there have been instances where the field goal process has been rocky. Snaps have been off target, the laces on the ball haven’t been in the right direction, and opposing players have passed through unblocked, leading to blocked kicks.

Crosby, a consummate professional, is not one for excuses.

“It all starts and ends with me,” Crosby said Thursday. “I gotta make kicks whenever my number is called.”

Crosby has experienced all of the highs and lows of an NFL kicker. He made the 10th game-winning kick of his career, including playoffs, against the Cincinnati Bengals earlier this year. However, in that same game, Crosby missed three field goals and an extra point before making his walkoff 49-yarder in overtime.

Naturally, sometimes the process isn’t as good as it should be, but ultimately it comes down to a pure strike of the ball.

“As long as I’m able to kick a ball and do this thing, I’m going to always take ultimate responsibility for what happens out there on the field,” he said.

The operation was pretty clean on Crosby’s 54-yard attempt to start the day against the Vikings. A good snap and good hold helped Crosby connect on his longest field goal of the season.

But when Crosby was called upon for a 32-yard chip shot in the second quarter, the snap and hold appeared to be clean, but his kick hit the left upright. The missed kick turned out to be crucial for the Packers. Had Crosby made the short field goal attempt, the winner may have been decided in overtime rather than regulation.

Over the last five games, Crosby has missed five field goals between 30 and 49 yards, and he leads the NFL with four missed field goals between 30 and 39 yards, usually a high-percentage distance for today’s kickers.

Green Bay should at least let Crosby finish out the season. He has recovered from bad stretches in the past, none worse than his four missed field goals against the Detroit Lions in 2018. Many thought Crosby’s days were numbered, but he bounced back to connect on 95 percent of his attempts through the 2019 and 2020 seasons. Last year, Crosby made every one of his field goals for the first time in his career.

Kickers have gone on to play into their 40s and remain consistent. Crosby, 37, is in his 15th season and signed through the 2022 season. The team can give him a chance to show improvement through the last half of 2021 and then decide whether to move on in the offseason. JJ Molson, who the Packers have protected on the practice squad all year, could be one option down the road.

5 bold predictions for Bears’ Week 6 showdown vs. Packers

From Justin Fields’ big day to Jaylon Johnson vs. Davante Adams, here are our bold predictions as the Bears battle the Packers.

The oldest and best rivalry in the NFL is renewed this weekend when the Chicago Bears host the Green Bay Packers at Soldier Field for their 201st meeting in the regular season. Well, maybe “best” is pushing it at this point since the Bears can only seem to beat the Packers once every three years or so. But hey, maybe that means they’re due, right?

It’s been the same story for over a decade at this point: Aaron Rodgers just finds ways to rip your heart out while the Bears offense struggles to play one complete quarter, let alone an entire game. That may be changing already, however, with Justin Fields getting his first start in the rivalry. Hopefully he can end the carousel of quarterbacks that Rodgers feebly attempted to name this week.

At the very least, I’m predicting this game will be a lot closer and competitive than in years past. And speaking of picks, here are my bold predictions for Bears vs. Packers this week.

This classy moment between Mason Crosby and Evan McPherson after his premature celebration is too god

This is what sports is all about.

Packers kicker Mason Crosby and Bengals kicker Evan McPherson each had rough games this past Sunday in Cincinnati.

They combined to miss five field goals from late in the fourth quarter and into OT before Crosby finally won the game for Green Bay with a 49-yard FG.

Things got a little awkward for McPherson in OT when he prematurely celebrated what he thought was a made field goal before seeing that it had sailed a little wide left and was no good.

NFL Films released a great video of the two kickers talking after the game that shows McPherson making fun of himself for the celebration. Crosby, who has been in the league for like 900 years, then offered some kind words to the rookie, who was picked in the fifth round of the 2021 NFL Draft.

This is great:

All class.

NFL fans rightfully loved it.

Given four chances, Mason Crosby finally kicks the Packers to victory in Cincinnati

Mason Crosby hit a 49-yard game-winning field goal late in overtime to send the Packers to a wild win over the Bengals.

The fourth time is the charm for Green Bay Packers kicker Mason Crosby.

The always reliable veteran kicker missed three potential game-winning kicks before nailing his fourth opportunity late in overtime during a wild and almost unbelievable end to the Packers’ win over the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday at Paul Brown Stadium.

After the game tied at 22-22 late in the fourth quarter, everything went haywire in the kicking game.

Crosby missed from 36 yards with 2:14 left in the fourth quarter, from 51 yards as time expired in the fourth quarter and from 40 yards with 8:12 left in overtime. The Bengals and Packers conspired to give him a fourth shot, and Crosby sent his 49-yard field goal sailing through the uprights with 1:58 left in overtime.

Crosby wasn’t the only one missing. Bengals rookie kicker Evan McPherson missed from 57 yards with 26 seconds left in the fourth quarter and from 49 yards with 4:19 left in overtime. The first kick would have given the Bengals the lead late, the second would have won the game outright.

After McPherson’s second miss, the Packers drove 29 yards to give Crosby another chance.

“I was really happy to hit that last one,” Crosby said.

Crosby said he went into the final kick feeling comfortable from the left hash, where he hit two field goals earlier in the contest.

Crosby missed an extra point in the first half, but his first two field goals extended his franchise record to 26 consecutive made field goals.

Entering Sunday, Crosby was 6-for-6 on field goals and 11-for-11 on extra points, and he hadn’t missed two field goals in a game since Oct. of 2018.

The kick was Crosby’s second game-winning field goal of the 2021 season. He hit the game-winner as time expired during the Packers’ 30-28 win over the San Francisco 49ers in Week 3.

Bengals’ Evan McPherson celebrates missing field goal in overtime

Evan McPherson may never life down celebrating a missed field goal in OT

Evan McPherson thought he nailed a field goal to give the Cincinnati Bengals a victory Sunday over the Green Bay Packers in overtime.

He knew he made it and the Bengals were going to be 4-1.

McPherson, a rookie from Florida, started to celebrate.

One problem: the kick was no good. Rookie mistake!

There were 5 missed field goals in the game from the 2:12 mark left in the fourth quarter.

This marked the first time since 1991 there were 4 straight missed field goals in the 3 minutes and overtime.

And talk about redemption. Mason Crosby, who had missed three field goals and a PAT, got another shot from 49 and won it in overtime for Green Bay.

Packers K Mason Crosby breaks own franchise record for consecutive FGs made

Packers K Mason Crosby has made 24 consecutive regular season field goals, setting the new team record.

Green Bay Packers kicker Mason Crosby set a new franchise record on Sunday against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The 37-year-old kicker made his first two field goal attempts, extending his consecutive field goal streak to 24 and breaking his previous team record of 23, which he previously set in 2011.

Crosby, who made the game-winner last week and was the NFC Special Teams Player of the Week, hasn’t missed a field goal since Week 17 of 2019.

Crosby made two straight field goals to end the 2019 season, all 16 field goals in 2020 and his first six fields of the 2021 season, giving him 24 straight makes. He also made all four of his field goals in the playoffs last year, but the record counts only the regular season.

The NFL record for consecutive field goals made is 44, set by Adam Vinatieri.

Packers K Mason Crosby named NFC Special Teams Player of the Week

Crosby was named the NFC Special Teams Player of the Week for Week 3 of the 2021 NFL season.

A perfect night kicking field goals and extra points – including the game-winning field goal as time expired – helped Green Bay Packers kicker Mason Crosby earn a weekly award from the NFL.

Crosby was named the NFC Special Teams Player of the Week for Week 3 of the 2021 NFL season.

Crosby made all six of his kicks in the Packers’ 30-28 win over the San Francisco 49ers, including a 54-yarder to open the scoring and a 51-yarder to win the game. He was also 3-for-3 on extra points.

This is the eighth time Crosby has been named the NFC Special Teams Player of the Week, and the first time since Week 6 of 2018.

Crosby hasn’t missed a field goal in 22 tries.

Through three games in 2021, Crosby is 4-for-4 on field goals and 8-for-8 on extra points. He was a perfect 16-for-16 on field goals last season.

According to the NFL, Crosby tied Aaron Rodgers and Brett Favre for the most Player of the Week awards in Packers history.

The other Players of the Week in the NFC for Week 3 were Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford and Cardinals cornerback Byron Murphy.

Packers K Mason Crosby drills 51-yard field goal to beat 49ers

Packers QB Aaron Rodgers hit Davante Adams twice for 42 yards, setting up Mason Crosby’s game-winning 51-yard field goal on Sunday night against the 49ers.

The San Francisco 49ers left 37 seconds on the fourth quarter for Aaron Rodgers, Davante Adams and Mason Crosby, and the trio used every second to stun the Levi’s Stadium crowd and send the Green Bay Packers home with an incredible 30-28 win on Sunday night.

After the 49ers scored late to go up 28-27, Rodgers hit Adams twice for 42 yards to set up Crosby’s game-winning 51-yard field goal as time expired.

The Packers led for much of the game but needed heroics from three of the team’s best players to escape San Francisco with a win.

Rodgers threw an incredible pass to Adams for 25 yards on the opening play of the drive. He later hit Adams for 17 more yards, putting the Packers into Crosby’s range.

The veteran kicker drilled the 51-yarder right down the middle for the win.

The Packers have now won two straight primetime games after losing in Week 1, while the 49ers are now 2-1 after losing Sunday night’s home opener.

Mason Crosby nails 51-yard field goal to lift Green Bay Packers over San Francisco 49ers

Aaron Rodgers, Davante Adams and Mason Crosby powered the Packers

In Sunday Night Football Thriller, the Green Bay Packers defeated the San Francisco 49ers, 30-28, when Mason Crosby kicked a 51-yard field goal as time expired.

The kick was Crosby’s 26th straight successful field goal.

The winner came after the 49ers had scored with 37 seconds left to go ahead 28-27 on a Jimmy Garoppolo pass to Kyle Juszczyk.

That completed an 8-play, 75-yard drive.

On the final march, Rodgers had no timeouts but managed to get the Packers in position to kick the winning field goal.

Rodgers connected twice with Davante Adams for 42 yards.

Wild preseason finale for Packers K Mason Crosby includes missed chip shot, and a punt

Saturday’s preseason finale saw veteran Packers K Mason Crosby do something he rarely does, and something he’s never done.

During Saturday’s preseason finale in Buffalo, Green Bay Packers veteran kicker Mason Crosby did one thing he rarely does, and one thing he’s never done.

Crosby, now in his 15th NFL season, missed a 28-yard field goal in the first half and then punted in a live game for the first time in his professional career.

Crosby, who turns 37 next month, didn’t miss a single field goal last season, making all 16 attempts. And he almost never misses chip-shots. For his career during the regular season, Crosby has connected on 93 of 95 field goals between 20 of 29 yards, with his last miss coming way back in 2011. Late in the first half Saturday, Crosby’s 28-yard attempt from the left hash mark stayed left and missed.

The rarities for Crosby didn’t end there.

In the fourth quarter, a leg cramp for punter JK Scott provided an opportunity he’s long waited for: a chance to punt in a real game. Typically, most teams only carry one punter on the roster, so the kicker is usually the primary backup. With Scott unable to punt, Crosby got his chance. His first punt traveled 41 yards and had just over four seconds of hang time.

“Did a nice job. He is not our punter,” coach Matt LaFleur joked post-game.

Here’s Crosby discussing the punting opportunity with Larry McCarren of the team’s official site:

Crosby and the Packers lost the preseason finale, 19-0. Nothing like a missed chip-shot and a 36-year-old kicker punting for the first time to help signify the end of the games that don’t matter.
