Rutgers football recruiting: What is Florida edge rusher Mason Carter hoping to see on his official visit?

Florida defensive end Mason Carter is taking an official visit to Rutgers football this weekend.

Mason Carter is taking an official visit to Rutgers football this weekend, this as the Florida edge rusher continues to build his relationship with the Big Ten program.

Carter was offered by Rutgers in mid-May. He is a three-star and the No. 97 edge rusher in the nation according to 247Sports.

Checking in at 6-foot-5 and 200 pounds, Carter has a long frame for an edge rusher. As a junior at Baldwin High School (Jacksonville, FL), Carter had 43 total tackles including two tackles for a loss. He also had one sack and five passes defended.

“I’m looking to see how the program is run and get a feel for the culture at Rutgers,” Carter told Rutgers Wire this week.

“It is important for me to see the facilities, the campus and learn about what they do to help their players to be successful on and off the field.”

Rutgers currently has a top 25 recruiting class in the nation following the commitment of three players from Florida last week.

This is a big official weekend for Rutgers, with several four-star players on-campus and some of the top recruits from New Jersey, New York and Florida taking their visits.

For Carter, the relationship with the Rutgers program is what stands out and is leading him to take this official visit.

“The communication and the amount of love they’ve shown me so far,” Carter said about what is standing out with Rutgers.

“Not too many other schools that are showing as much love as them.”

This is Carter’s first official visit. He has upcoming visits to Missouri, Minnesota and FAU – all in June.

Florida defensive end Mason Carter talks recent Rutgers football offer, updates official visit plans

Florida edge rusher Mason Carter talks recent Rutgers football offer.

An offer from Rutgers football could well lead to an official visit from Mason Carter, a standout Florida defensive end.

A 6-foot-5, 200-pound edge rusher for Baldwin High School (Jacksonville, FL), Carter had 43 total tackles including two tackles for a loss and a sack. He also had five passes defended.

It has been a busy May for Carter as Boston College, Tulane, Minnesota, Vanderbilt and Virginia offered Carter along with Rutgers.

The Rutgers offer came in last week after a visit from defensive coordinator Joe Harasymiak. This led to a call between Carter, Harasymiak and Rutgers head coach Greg Schiano.

“I met coach Harasymiak at my school earlier (last) week then, (Thursday) we were texting and I talked to him on the phone,” Carter told Rutgers Wire. “And after that, I talked to coach Schiano on the phone and he told me about their program and offered me.”

No official visits are planned yet, Carter says, but right now Minnesota, Vanderbilt, Tulane, Rutgers, Virginia, FAU, Troy and FIU are all in the mix.

He said that Minnesota is the program that is currently showing him the most love right now.

“I look for good coaching, culture, good academic program, and somewhere I can be developed,” Carter said.

“Most importantly I want to win and I’ll do whatever it takes to help my team do so.”

Rutgers football sends out an offer to Florida edge Mason Carter

Mason Carter is offered by Rutgers football on Friday.

For Mason Carter, Friday’s offer from Rutgers football became the second Big Ten offer for a prospect who now currently holds five offers from Power Five programs. There has certainly been an uptick in the Florida defensive lineman’s recruitment this month.

Rutgers joins Boston College, Tulane, Minnesota, Vanderbilt and Virginia in offering Carter in May. He also has gotten some other strong offers this month including FAU and Troy among others.

The offers from Rutgers and Virginia both came on Friday night.

Last season for Baldwin High School (Jacksonville, FL), Carter had 43 total tackles including two tackles for a loss. He also had one sack and five passes defended.

At 6-foot-5 and 200 pounds, Carter needs to add strength and size to compete at the Big Ten level. But, he has some good production and very nice tools which certainly could translate well to Power Five football.

He tweeted about the offer from Rutgers football on Friday night. He tagged head coach [autotag]Greg Schiano[/autotag] and defensive coordinator [autotag]Joe Harasymiak[/autotag] in the post:

The Rutgers football recruiting class currently stands at eight commits with six coming on the offensive side of the ball. In recent weeks, Rutgers has made a push in Florida with several new offers going out.

Last season, the 2023 recruiting class for Rutgers had six players from Florida. There are no commits from the state this current recruiting cycle but that is expected to change.
