Why UFC 286 fight with Roman Dolidze is ‘a bit personal’ for Marvin Vettori

Marvin Vettori was surprised former training partner Roman Dolidze was quick to accept a fight against him at UFC 286 in London.

LONDON – [autotag]Marvin Vettori[/autotag] was surprised former training partner [autotag]Roman Dolidze[/autotag] was quick to accept a fight against him.

Vettori (18-5-1 MMA, 8-4-1 UFC) meets Dolidze (12-1 MMA, 6-1 UFC) in a middleweight bout on Saturday’s UFC 286 main card opener at The O2 in London. The main card airs on pay-per-view following prelims on ESPNews and early prelims on ESPN+.

Vettori will look to rebound from his loss to ex-champion Robert Whittaker this past September, but that’s not the only thing on his mind.

“This fight is personal for me in a sense that I’ve never had two losses in a row, and this is not going to be the case (this week),” Vettori said at Wednesday’s UFC 286 media day. “I can’t wait to go out and put on a performance.

“It is a bit personal with Roman, too, in a sense because we actually trained together before and stuff and we have some good friends in common. He didn’t think twice when accepting the fight.”

The two trained together at Kings MMA, and Vettori implied he used to get the better of Dolidze during their sessions.

“They went well for me, I believe, but I’m the first to say that training ain’t a fight,” Vettori said. “But still, for sure they went well.”

Marvin Vettori ‘still running after the title’ ahead of UFC 286: ‘Don’t count me out’

Marvin Vettori won’t be a stepping stone for Roman Dolidze: “I’m still running after the title, don’t get me wrong. Don’t count me out.”

LAS VEGAS – [autotag]Marvin Vettori[/autotag] won’t be a stepping stone for Roman Dolidze.

Vettori (18-5-1 MMA, 8-4-1 UFC) meets Dolidze on the UFC 286 main card on March 18 at The O2 in London. The former title challenger has lost two of his past three, but setbacks came to ex-champs [autotag]Israel Adesanya[/autotag] and [autotag]Robert Whittaker[/autotag].

With a win over the streaking Dolidze (12-1 MMA, 6-1 UFC), Vettori plans on showing that he’s still a top contender.

“He’s definitely dangerous in some positions, but I think he’s trying to chew too much for his mouth,” Vettori told MMA Junkie. “He’s trying to take too big of a step for him, but he’s taking his chance and I’ll be there to prove him wrong.

“I’m still running after the title, don’t get me wrong. Don’t count me out, I’m in the top five, I’m one of the youngest in the division, and I’m coming for everything. I already faced everybody in the division and I can’t wait to just put it on, and I really want a finish, and we go from there.”

A new middleweight champion was crowned when Alex Pereira dethroned Adesanya at UFC 281. The pair are set to rematch in the UFC 287 headliner on April 8, and Vettori thinks the recent movement in the division benefits him.

“The middleweight division is so open,” Vettori said. “Pereira is the champ right now, he’s fighting Adesanya. I really believe I would do really well against those two now. My grappling has improved a lot, my kicking has improved a lot, I’m way more of a finisher right now. The division is so open. Like Pereira is 35 or 36, Adesanya is 33 or 34. Whittaker is not a brand-new flower even though he’s a beast. So yeah, it’s all about matchups.”

He continued, “I’m just gonna keep winning and just going to be right there beating everybody they put in front of me, and I’m sure the title will come.”

Marvin Vettori: UFC champion Alex Pereira will beat Israel Adesanya again if they rematch

Marvin Vettori thinks UFC middleweight champion Alex Pereira has Israel Adesanya’s number.

[autotag]Marvin Vettori[/autotag] thinks UFC middleweight champion [autotag]Alex Pereira[/autotag] has [autotag]Israel Adesanya[/autotag]’s number.

Pereira (7-1 MMA, 4-0 UFC) dethroned Adesanya to capture the middleweight title last November at UFC 281 with a fifth-round TKO. The win marked the third time “Poatan” got his hand raised against Adesanya, with the other two times in kickboxing.

With Adesanya (23-2 MMA, 12-2 UFC) being up 3-1 on the judges’ scorecards before getting finished by Pereira, an immediate rematch could be next for the former five-time defending champion. But if they do run things back, Vettori sees the same outcome.

“No, no, if they fight with Izzy (Adesanya) again, he’ll beat Izzy again,” Vettori told The Schmo. “I don’t know. I feel like he had a mission on beating him and then now he doesn’t really even – I mean, of course he cares because everybody cares about money, but he knows it’s like risky to fight anybody that has very good grappling. But I don’t mind him, I like him. If I have a chance to fight him, definitely I wanna fight him.”

[lawrence-related id=2608322,2605392,2603394]

Vettori (18-5-1 MMA, 8-4-1 UFC) is coming off a unanimous decision loss to Robert Whittaker at UFC Fight Night 209 in Paris. Whittaker was tentatively booked to face Paulo Costa at UFC 284, but the bout was scrapped after Costa failed to come to terms with the UFC.

So with Whittaker losing out on his opponent, Vettori doesn’t mind seeing him get the next shot at Pereira – and he likes his chances of winning.

“He’s beating a lot of people, he beat me the last fight, and the dude is solid,” Vettori said. “I think he deserves a title shot, too. I don’t know.”

He continued, “I think Whittaker can do it (beat Pereira) because of the grappling a little bit, and he’s a smart fighter.”

Former title challenger Vettori will meet rising contender Roman Dolidze on March 18 at UFC 286 from The O2 Arena in London.

Vettori (18-5-1 MMA, 8-4-1 UFC) looks to bounce back from a unanimous decision loss over Robert Whittaker in September. Vettori is 6-2 in his most recent eight, though 1-2 in his past three. Marvin Vettori after UFC Paris loss to Robert Whittaker: ‘I promise everyone I’ll be back better than ever’

Marvin Vettori was defeated but not deterred at UFC Paris.

[autotag]Marvin Vettori[/autotag] was defeated but not deterred.

Vettori came up short this past Saturday at UFC Fight Night 209, where he lost a unanimous decision to former middleweight champion Robert Whittaker at Accor Arena in Paris.

Afterward, Vettori (18-6-1 MMA, 8-4-1 UFC) grabbed the mic from Michael Bisping inside the octagon to deliver a message in Italian before Whittaker’s post-fight interview. Vettori wasn’t available to speak at the post-fight news conference.

On Monday, Vettori, 28, posted about the fight on Instagram and remained optimistic about his future.

“Starting from Mezzocorona and getting to the MMA world summit didn’t happen overnight,” Vettori wrote. “Against all odds and working steadily through these years, many have become passionate and inspired by my journey, where my determination has always prevailed. For this, I thank you from first to last. What you’ve seen so far is not the top of the mountain. We will climb back to conquer higher peaks. It’s a promise.

“This game ain’t for the faint of heart. We got big shoulders, and we don’t quit. There is just one way, and that is forward. I promise everyone I’ll be back better than ever. Hat’s off to Whittaker, good execution and good adjustments. Nothing’s changed, we are gonna be champion one day. I promise you that.”

After five consecutive wins from 2019 to 2021, Vettori earned a title shot against current 185-pound champion Israel Adesanya at UFC 263 and lost by convincing unanimous decision. Vettori rebounded with a unanimous decision win over Paulo Costa last October before the loss to Whittaker.

Israel Adesanya reacts to Robert Whittaker beating ‘jittery and spazzed out’ Marvin Vettori at UFC Paris

Israel Adesanya wasn’t too surprised with Robert Whittaker’s win over Marvin Vettori at UFC Fight Night 209.

UFC middleweight champion [autotag]Israel Adesanya[/autotag] wasn’t too surprised with [autotag]Robert Whittaker[/autotag]’s win over [autotag]Marvin Vettori[/autotag].

Whittaker (24-6 MMA, 15-4 UFC) put on a fantastic performance against former title challenger Vettori (18-5-1 MMA, 8-4-1 UFC) in this past Saturday’s UFC Fight Night 209 co-main event at Accor Arena in Paris.

Adesanya, who holds two wins each over Whittaker and Vettori, predicted that Whittaker would win. Although he credited Whittaker for “flowing” throughout the fight, Adesanya didn’t echo the same sentiment as the majority of fighters who were in awe of “The Reaper.”

“Rob went in there and then did his f*cking two fake kick him in the head, clipped him and then he banked on that, and then he kept on hitting him with it,” Adesanya said on his YouTube channel. “And Vettori showed a lot of shoulder and f*cking jittery and spazzed out, so yeah, that’s what the fight was.”

[lawrence-related id=2578043,2577784]

On the contrary, Adesanya thoroughly enjoyed the night’s headliner between Ciryl Gane and Tai Tuivasa, and praised Tuivasa for his toughness before he was ultimately finished in Round 3.

“Main event was dope,” Adesanya said. “Tai had his moment. He dinked him, almost sank him. Even Ciryl reckons he got knocked out, but he came back and did what he did, what he does.”

He continued, “Surprisingly, he was invested in that body early on. Yeah, Tai held on. Tai was like, just one more kamikaze, just like, ‘OK, I’m gonna take this shot, this pain right now, and I’m gonna flush him.'”
