Marvin Vettori set to face Karl Roberson at UFC on ESPN+ 31

After his UFC London fight fell through, Italian middleweight Marvin Vettori now faces Karl Roberson at UFC on ESPN+ 31 on Apr. 25.

Just one month after seeing his fight in London scratched, Italian middleweight [autotag]Marvin Vettori[/autotag] has a new assignment to prepare for.

Vettori (14-3-1 MMA, 4-2-1 UFC) will take on [autotag]Karl Roberson[/autotag] (9-2 MMA, 4-2 UFC) at UFC on ESPN+ 31 on Apr. 25. Roberson confirmed the matchup on his social media after an initial report from MMA Fighting.

Vettori was scheduled to face England’s Darren Stewart at UFC on ESPN+ 29 in London last month, but due to the escalating travel and event hosting issues during the COVID-19 pandemic, the event was postponed and Vettori’s fight was scrapped. Stewart went on to face Poland’s Bartosz Fabinski at Cage Warriors 113, and now Vettori has his replacement matchup.

Roberson was expected to face Makhmud Muradov at UFC 249 on Apr. 18, but Prague resident Muradov has also been unable to leave the country. The American will now push his preparation back one week and switch his focus to U.S.-based Italian Vettori, with both men looking to make it three wins in a row.

Marvin Vettori, Nicolas Dalby among fighters who say they were compensated for UFC London cancellation

Ten days after the cancellation of UFC London, Marvin Vettori, Nicolas Dalby and others say the UFC has compensated them.

It appears the fighters on the UFC London card have been taken care of financially after the event fell through due to the global coronavirus pandemic.

Marvin Vettori, Nicolas Dalby and other fighters on the card who had their bouts pulled when UFC on ESPN+ 29 was scrapped in March took to social media to thank the UFC for sorting them out.

California resident Vettori was scheduled to face Darren Stewart on the card and was willing to compete before a travel ban put a halt to his plans.

In a unique turn of events, Stewart was rebooked on the Cage Warriors 113 card against Bartosz Fabinski, who also had lost his original UFC London opponent due to travel restrictions.

Now 10 days later, Vettori said the UFC has taken care of him and posted about it on Twitter:

“Thank to the @ufc for taking care of me for the London card situation, I’ve been all in from day 1 in this and it’s good to see that even in hard times like these the work im doing is being recognized. Always ready always working. Thank you @ufc @danawhite @Mickmaynard2”

Vettori (14-3-1 MMA, 4-2-1 UFC) is coming off back-to-back wins for the first time in his UFC career with victories over Cezar Ferreira and Andrew Sanchez. The Italy native’s homeland has taken a massive hit during the pandemic, but Vettori reported this past week that his family is safe and healthy during its own lockdown.

Dalby had his co-main event fight with Danny Roberts completely scrapped from the card. He made a triumphant return to the octagon this past September in his home country of Denmark with a win over Alex Oliveira by unanimous decision, giving him four straight victories.

“As a fighter AND a father & family provider I would like to take a moment to thank @seanshelby, @danawhite and @ufc for stepping up and taking care of us fighters from the cancelled #UFCLondon event! These times are taking a huge hit on all of us, even UFC. So I really commend you for helping us get through this tough period so we can take care of our families and stay ready to fight as soon as possible and once again put on exciting fights for the fans, in the best fight promotion in the world 🙏🏼❤️💪🏼
#Thankful | #GoodKarma | #StaySafe”

More fighters chimed in with their gratitude toward the UFC while they cope through these tough times.

Marvin Vettori vows to stay ready through pandemic, welcomes Antonio Carlos Junior rematch

Marvin Vettori can hardly hide his frustration to the world’s current situation, but he’s not losing sight of his career goals right now.

[autotag]Marvin Vettori[/autotag] can hardly hide his frustration when he thinks about the events that led to the cancellation of UFC on ESPN+ 29. “The Italian Dream” was itching to step into the cage and was absolutely devastated when that opportunity was taken away from him.

“I was like, ‘Fly me out, fly me out, whatever,'” Vettori told MMA Junkie. “But I’m still hoping I’m fighting soon, man.

“(Expletive), man, this thing is really delaying my mission to get to the top. That pisses me off.”

Vettori was scheduled to face Darren Stewart this past weekend at UFC on ESPN+ 29 in London, a card that was ultimately scrapped due to the ongoing global coronavirus outbreak. Stewart got rebooked at Cage Warriors 113 in a rarely seen talent-sharing deal between the two promotions. However, Vettori, an Italian national currently based in California, didn’t have that luxury due to travel bans being implemented that would have made his return to the U.S. difficult, if not impossible.

“They woke me up like 3:30 a.m. in the morning,” Vettori recalled. “They were like, ‘Fight is off, we have to go back,’ and everybody was freaking out.”

[lawrence-related id=501716,501661,500687]

Now Vettori faces challenges of a different type. With California in a government ordered lockdown, he’s not exactly sure how he’s going to train. But he insists “how” is the right question, not “if.”

“Even on my rest days, I’m training twice a day,” Vettori said. “I love training. Staying ready for me is not a big issue. I’m a straight up savage. The more I do this, the more I just embrace it all the way, and I’m just going to stay ready. But I don’t know what’s going on. I’m going to be ready for everything. I’m going to make sure. I’m going to be ready. It’s frustrating. The whole thing is frustrating.

“I’m going to try, for sure. I don’t know if it’s legal. I’m going to try to hide and do something.”

Vettori’s Italian homeland is currently mired deep in the pandemic, serving as the global epicenter of the crisis for the time being as China reports improvements in the situation there. Fortunately, he says, his family is safe thus far and remain healthy during their own mandatory lockdown.

That knowledge leaves Vettori (14-3-1 MMA, 4-2-1 UFC) free to continue chasing his dream, even if it’s temporarily on hold. When UFC operations do resume, he has an idea for a booking, as well. The 26-year-old slugger would love to avenge his UFC defeats, and while he knows a bout with current champ Israel Adesanya isn’t in the cards, he thinks a second fight with Brazilian submission artist [autotag]Antonio Carlos Junior[/autotag] (10-4 MMA, 7-4 UFC) might make some sense.

“I want the rematch with all the guys I lost early in the UFC,” Vettori said. “I’d love a fight with Antonio Carlos Junior, too. Even though he’s coming from losses, he’s still higher than me in the ranking, so I would love that fight.”

Of course, right now, the UFC’s entire schedule is at the mercy of the coronavirus, so Vettori doesn’t really know what to expect next. But he says he’s going to stay on the ready so when the UFC’s ready to start back up, he’s happy to answer the phone.

“I want to fight as soon as this thing gets better and they’re going to start running events,” Vettori said. “I want to fight. I will stay ready.”

Marvin Vettori thought Yoel Romero won at UFC 248, says Israel Adesanya ‘showed me his true colors’

Marvin Vettori wants another crack at current champ Israel Adesanya, and until that day comes, he’s not about to hold back on his opinions.

UFC middleweight contender [autotag]Marvin Vettori[/autotag] wants another crack at current champ [autotag]Israel Adesanya[/autotag], and until that day comes, he’s not about to hold back on his opinions.

The outspoken Italian slugger came up short against “The Last Stylebender” in an April 2018 clash, and Vettori admits it still leaves a sour taste in his mouth.

“People can say whatever they want about my fight,” Vettori told MMA Junkie. “I have my opinions. He has his opinions. People have their opinions, … but whoever won that fight, and the judges – one gave it to me, two gave it to him – whoever, even him, is he happy with what happened in that fight? Did it really go down like it was supposed to go down? Did anybody really come out on top, like saying, ‘I beat the other guy,’?

“If anything, he came out more beat up than me from that fight.”

Clearly, Vettori (14-3-1 MMA, 4-2-1 UFC) isn’t likely to praise Adesanya (19-0 MMA, 8-0 UFC) for much of anything, but “The Italian Dream” actually levies the responsibility for the champ’s lackluster UFC 248 win over [autotag]Yoel Romero[/autotag] (13-5 MMA, 9-4 UFC) on both participants.

Vettori believes Romero’s initial strategy was sound, but that the 42-year-old Cuban veteran should have seen the fight slipping away as it was unfolding and made the necessary adjustments.

[lawrence-related id=501595,501080,500979]

“I was disappointed on both sides,” Vettori said. “I think the fault was on both sides. I actually thought Romero won the fight, but it was very close, and I know these New Zealand guys are unbeatable in decisions. If they go to decisions, they’re unbeatable. What I’m saying is, third title fight, 42 years old, you know the situation, and the strategy was good, but then fourth and fifth, starting from the third, you’ve got to bring it up a little more.”

Adesanya retained his belt in the March 7 event in Las Vegas, taking home a unanimous decision win, but he was widely criticized in the aftermath of what was expected to be a much better contest. And while Vettori does believe Romero shares in the blame, he also thinks Adesanya showed that he’s not the unbeatable monster his unblemished record might suggest.

“From Adesanya, I’m seeing just a scared guy, honestly – like, he didn’t want to take risks, and I’ll tell you why: Because Romero was being very good of not reacting to his feints and being very unpredictable, which he always is, but even more, and doing all this weird (expletive), so Adesanya wouldn’t have a lot to build on,” Vettori said. “Even if it looks like he’s a striker and he does all this weird (expletive), he plays it safe a lot of times, and people fall for this (expletive). But I’ve seen it.

“When he has to take some risks there, because Romero was being good at not reacting and stuff, he’s been scared to go fight. He got hit a couple times, and he just acted like a bitch the whole time, and so that showed me his true colors. That showed me that if there is a need to take risks, he’s not going to take them. He’s going to stay real safe. He knows he’s not going to be finished, and he known he’s not going to be beat by decision.”

Adesanya is expected to take on undefeated Brazilian brawler Paulo Costa in his next outing, though the MMA world is currently on hold along with the rest of the globe during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Meanwhile, Vettori has earned back-to-back decision wins since his loss to Adesanya and was eyeing a third result before his UFC on ESPN+ 29 bout with Darren Stewart was scratched this past weekend.

Vettori knows he’s not yet in line for a crack at the belt, but he does hope to get another shot at Adesanya in the not-too-distant future.

“It’s not over” Adesanya said. “I think we have to settle it. We need another fight, for sure.”

Darren Stewart vs. Marvin Vettori added to UFC London

A matchup between surging middleweights Darren Stewart and Marvin Vettori is the latest addition to UFC London.

A matchup between surging middleweights is the latest addition to UFC London.

[autotag]Darren Stewart[/autotag] (11-4 MMA, 4-4 UFC) will take on [autotag]Marvin Vettori[/autotag] (14-3-1 MMA, 4-2-1 UFC) at the March 21 event, UFC officials announced Tuesday morning. The card, which does not yet have a main event, takes place at O2 Arena in London and is expected to either air on ESPN or stream on ESPN+.

On the cusp of being cut from the UFC in 2017 after suffering three straight losses, Stewart has since won four of his last five. He is currently coming off back-to-back wins over Bevon Lewis and, most recently, Deron Winn in October. He will now compete in his home country of England for the third time in his UFC career.

Vettori has also won his last two in a row, picking up unanimous decision wins over Cezar Ferreira and Andrew Sanchez. In his last loss in April 2018, one judge awarded Vettori the win over undefeated and current UFC middleweight champion Israel Adesanya, but the other two gave it to Adesanya, as he was ultimately edged out by split decision. He will now look to make it three wins in a row when he heads into enemy territory and takes on Stewart.

The current UFC London lineup includes:

  • John Phillips vs. Dusko Todorovic
  • Darren Stewart vs. Marvin Vettori
  • Tom Aspinall vs. Raphael Pessoa
  • Ashlee Evans-Smith vs. Molly McCann
  • Marc Diakiese vs. Stevie Ray
