Top 10 returning Oklahoma Sooners on offense according to PFF

The Oklahoma Sooners top returning offensive players according to their PFF grade.

The Oklahoma Sooners are expecting to be a top offense in college football once again. They will be led by their quarterback Spencer Rattler, a frontrunner for the Heisman Memorial Trophy. He has one of the highest returning grades in the country, not just the Big 12 Conference according to Pro Football Focus.

Other key returners include standout freshman wide receiver Marvin Mims, who led Oklahoma in receiving. Austin Stogner returns to reprise his role as the mismatch across the middle of the field at tight end. The Sooners also return three starters on the offensive line who will be keys to protecting the quarterback.

Kennedy Brooks had the top grade in 2019 according to PFF. However, on this list of top returning offensive players, it focuses only on those who played in at least five games in 2020.

The top 10 returning offensive players based on their PFF grade:

Look where Pro Football Focus ranks Marvin Mims among returning receivers

The Oklahoma Sooners found quite the weapon at wide receiver in Marvin Mims. He is ranked among the top 10 returning WRs per PFF.

The Oklahoma Sooners offense is likely to be very good in 2021. Way to go out on a limb, right? Spencer Rattler returns as the No. 1 quarterback according to Pro Football Focus. His backfield mate in Kennedy Brooks is ranked as the No. 3 returning running back. So what about the wide receivers? The Sooners have more than a few options.

When it comes to the guys catching the ball from Rattler, freshman Marvin Mims ranks right up there. The freshman led the Oklahoma offense in receptions, yards, yards per reception, touchdowns, and touches for non-running backs. He also had the longest reception in 2020, it came against the Texas Christian Horned Frogs.

Not sure anyone knew that the freshman would come in immediately and take over in the wide receiver room. His play helped the team win yet another Big 12 Championship. Pro Football Focus ranked him as the No. 6 returning wide receiver in college football.

Mims wasn’t the first, second or even third option in this Oklahoma offense this past year. The true freshman ranked fourth on his team in total routes run but was by far the most productive Sooner and one of the most productive receivers in the FBS. His 89.1 receiving grade and 4.07 yards per route run both ranked among the 10 best marks at the position in 2020.

The 5-foot-11, 177-pound receiver showed quality body adjustment and speed while routinely getting open downfield. Despite seeing only 49 targets, Mims was able to bring in 11 deep receptions in 2020 (tied for the fourth-most in the Power Five). His stock is on the rise for 2021.

Mims matched the Heisman Trophy winner Devonta Smith in touchdown catches of 20+ yards. Only one of his nine came within 20 yards of the endzone. His production for the offense was through the roof, when the Sooners needed a big pass play they called on the freshman.

The trio of Rattler, Brooks, and Mims should be one of the most exciting trios of offensive weapons to watch in 2021.

The season may have ended nearly three weeks ago for Oklahoma, but the postseason honors are still rolling in.

Sooners quarterback Spencer Rattler and wide receiver Marvin Mims were both named to the Football Writers Association of America Freshman All-America Team on Monday.

Rattler is the first Oklahoma quarterback to get selected to the team since Sam Bradford in 2007 and Mims is the first wide receiver in program history to pick up the honor. The two young Sooners are the 16th and 17th FWAA Freshman All-Americans in team history dating back to its beginning in 2001.

Along with Kenneth Murray in 2017, Creed Humphrey in 2018 and Gabe Brkic in 2019, this marks the fourth straight year at least one Oklahoma player has been selected and the seventh in the last eight.

Mims led the Sooners with 610 receiving yards and a Sooners freshman-record nine touchdown receptions. Rattler, meanwhile, went 214 for 317 passing on the year for 3,031 yards and 28 scores.

Oklahoma’s Spencer Rattler, Creed Humphrey, Isaiah Thomas and Gabe Brkic named AP All-Big 12 First Team

Four Oklahoma players were named to the AP All-Big 12 first team on Thursday with another five getting placed on the second team.

The end of the season accolades keep coming in for Oklahoma.

On Thursday the AP All-Big 12 teams were announced with nine players receiving honors including four on the first team. Those four are quarterback Spencer Rattler, center Creed Humphrey, defensive tackle Isaiah Thomas and kicker Gabe Brkic.

Rattler was not included on either of the conference’s All-Big 12 teams that were announced last week, which he expressed his displeasure about, and Thomas was on second team as no Sooners defensive players received first team honors. Head coach Lincoln Riley made it clear the team was displeased by those lack of selections. Those frustrations are certainly receiving some validation given the honors that have come their way since including Rattler being deemed the Big 12 Player of the Year by Pro Football Focus.

The five players who were named to the AP All-Big 12 second team are offensive tackle Adrian Ealy, tight end Austin Stogner, wide receiver Marvin Mims, linebacker Nik Bonitto and cornerback Tre Brown.

Similar to Rattler, Bonitto was not named to the first or second team All-Big 12 either, but was named an All-American by Pro Football Focus.

Oklahoma will conclude their season in less than a week next Wednesday night against the Florida Gators in the Goodyear Cotton Bowl.

Oklahoma WR Marvin Mims earns Big 12 Weekly honors after performance against TCU

Oklahoma freshman WR Marvin Mims has earned multiple Big 12 honors this week after his stellar outing against the TCU Horned Frogs.

Oklahoma freshman wide receiver Marvin Mims was a big part of the Sooners’ 33-14 win over TCU on Saturday.

The youngster hauled in four catches for 132 yards and two touchdowns including one on a spectacular contested catch for 61 yards. He finished the game just short of 200 all-purpose yards.

The performance earned Mims not one, but two Big 12 honors this week. He takes home both Big 12 Co-Offensive Player of the Week as well as Big 12 Newcomer of the Week.

The other Co-Offensive Player of the Week is Iowa State’s Breece Hall.

Mims has become a big part of Oklahoma’s offense and looks to be developing a great connection with fellow freshman Spencer Rattler.

Next up for him and the rest of his Sooner teammates is a trip to Lubbock on Saturday to take on Texas Tech.

WATCH: Oklahoma freshman WR Marvin Mims makes 61-yard touchdown catch

Spencer Rattler connects with Marvin Mims on a deep touchdown pass late in the third quarter.

Marvin Mims has been one of the breakout starts for the 2020 Oklahoma Sooners, and he’s kept that going today in Fort Worth against TCU.

After pulling down a touchdown earlier in the game, Spencer Rattler connected with him on a 61-yard bomb down the field.

Mims is already well north of 100 yards with a quarter to go.

Spencer Rattler, meanwhile, has been extremely efficient with over 300 yards passing on just eleven completions – including the two touchdowns to Mims.

The touchdown gave Oklahoma a 27[vertical-gallery id=19040]-7 lead late in the third frame as the Sooners look to push their winning streak up to two games.

Oklahoma in review: Marvin Mims, grad transfers give receiver room depth relief

Oklahoma only had four receivers returning heading into the 2020 season. They have added some much needed depth relief this offseason.

Oklahoma only had four receivers returning heading into the 2020 season.

Charleston Rambo, Theo Wease, Jadon Haselwood and Trejan Bridges—that’s it. Haselwood is out due to an injury suffered in April and Bridges is suspended for the first half of the 2020 season. Essentially: Depth at the position was a major concern for the first time since 2017.

Then, Marvin Mims played his first game as a true freshman. Yes, he’ll help.

“He can run,” said Lincoln Riley this week. “He’s really fast. He’s easily one of the fastest players on our team. Where that is exactly on a clock with the abnormal off season, it’s tough for me to say. He’s in the fast world. He’s in the 4.4 and under world.”

Mims was explosive on two of his three punt returns and caught three passes for 80 receiving yards and one touchdown.

Oklahoma also took in UCLA grad transfer Theo Howard this offseason who made his debut in the first game. The Sooners also brought in Obi Obialo from Marshall.

The depth got some relief in the form of the three this season and it’s a group Howard is excited to see grow.

“I’ve been around a lot of receiver groups, obviously, over my years,” he said on Tuesday. “We have a lot of young guys with an immense amount of talent. Obviously, my side of the ball with Theo Wease, Trevon West, and then you go over to Marvin Mims to Rambo, you have Trejan Bridges, Jadon Haselwood—e have a lot of talent. Really, the sky’s the limit for this group. I don’t necessarily think we have one strength. I think all of us bring something different to the table. Whenever we get all of our guys back and get back to it, I think we’re going to be dangerous.”
