Two heavyweights withdraw from UFC 310; one fight backfilled

Two UFC 310 heavyweights have withdrawn due to injury, but only one opening has been backfilled.

Two heavyweight fights scheduled for UFC 310 have been impacted by withdrawals.

With [autotag]Tallison Teixeira[/autotag] off the Dec. 10 card at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas due to injury, Kennedy Nzechukwu has stepped into the lineup opposite [autotag]Lukasz Brzeski[/autotag]. Additionally, after [autotag]Martin Buday[/autotag] pulled out due to injury, his bout vs. [autotag]Rizvan Kuniev[/autotag] was canceled altogether.

The promotion made both changes official Wednesday. Polish outlet InTheCage.pl first reported the Nzechukwu-Brzeski bout.

Nzechukwu (13-5 MMA, 7-5 UFC) made his promotional heavyweight debut in October when he finished Chris Barnett with strikes in Round 1. The win snapped a two-fight losing skid.

Brzeski (9-5-1 MMA, 1-4 UFC) aims to turn things around after a knockout loss to Mick Parkin in March. The defeat came after his first career UFC win, a unanimous decision over Valter Walker.

With the changes, the UFC 310 lineup includes:

  • Alexandre Pantoja vs. Kai Asakura – for flyweight title
  • Ian Machado Garry vs. Shavkat Rakhmonov
  • Ciryl Gane vs. Alexander Volkov
  • Kron Gracie vs. Bryce Mitchell
  • Movsar Evloev vs. Aljamain Sterling
  • Dominick Reyes vs. Anthony Smith
  • Clay Guida vs. Chase Hooper
  • Eryk Anders vs. Chris Weidman
  • Michael Chiesa vs. Max Griffin
  • Themba Gorimbo vs. Vicente Luque

Martin Buday not thrilled with UFC 303 win over Andrei Arlovski, but blames the ‘Pitbull’ pace

Martin Buday picked up arguably the biggest win of his career at UFC 303, but it might not be one he wants to look back too fondly on.

LAS VEGAS – [autotag]Martin Buday[/autotag] picked up arguably the biggest win of his career at UFC 303, but it might not be one he wants to look back too fondly on.

Buday (14-2 MMA, 5-1 UFC) took a split decision from former UFC heavyweight champion Andrei Arlovski (34-24 MMA, 23-18 UFC), who confirmed after the fight his time in the UFC is over. Their fight on the early prelims largely was panned by fans and pundits for lackluster action, and Buday put much of the onus on Arlovski for that.

“I’m not happy with the performance at all,” Buday said after his win at T-Mobile Arena. “I accepted his pace, his game, and that was the main issue of my bad performance. I wanted to deliver a finish, for sure. I wanted to be more active in the standup. I had trouble finding distance, so when he closed it, I accepted the clinch game and I tried to work from that. That was probably a mistake.”

Check out Buday’s full post-fight news conference in the video above.

UFC 296 video: Shamil Gaziev beats brakes off Martin Buday for standing TKO

Could a new UFC heavyweight contender be on the rise? Shamil Gaziev looked like one vs. Martin Buday.

LAS VEGAS – A new heavyweight contender could be in the making.

In the UFC 296 preliminary card opener, promotional debutant [autotag]Shamil Gaziev[/autotag] walked through [autotag]Martin Buday[/autotag] for a standing TKO stoppage at 0:56 of Round 2. The event took place at T-Mobile Arena.

From the opening bell, Gaziev (12-0 MMA, 1-0 UFC) damaged Buday (13-1 MMA, 4-0 UFC) with punches of all variations. Even his jabs seemed to get a big reaction out of Buday, who was quickly sliced up and bleeding.

Midway through Round 1, referee Mark Smith had the doctor examine Buday’s lacerations. Again, at the start of Round 2, the doctor came in. Both times, the doctor gave the thumbs up and the fight was allowed to continue.

It didn’t take long for the fight to be called off after the doctor left in Round 2, however, as Buday absorbed blow after blow from an aggressive Gaziev. Although he never went down, Buday didn’t intelligently defend himself. He just covered up along the fence.

Gaziev’s debut was a successful one. It came after a contract-earning finish of Greg Velasco on “Dana White’s Contender Series” in September.

On the flip side, Buday loses for the first time under the promotion’s banner. He was briefly ranked in the promotion’s official rankings but had recently fallen out. Buday signed a new multi-fight deal with the promotion before the bout.
