New Orleans Saints game previews: Week 5 at Kansas City Chiefs

New Orleans Saints game previews: Week 5 brings a prime time challenge against the reigning Super Bowl-champion Kansas City Chiefs

For Week 5 of our New Orleans Saints game previews, we’ve reached the team’s toughest test of the season. Monday Night Football against the defending Super Bowl-champion Kansas City Chiefs in KC. An early-season matchup against the best player in the world, Patrick Mahomes, in front of a nationwide audience. Doesn’t get any better than this.

Coming into the 2024 season, Kansas City returns a lot of the members of their Super Bowl team except for a few areas where there’s a bit of turnover. The most notable spot is on the defensive side of the ball where the team agreed to a trade with the Tennessee Titans earlier in the offseason to send Louisiana native, star cornerback L’Jarius Sneed to Nashville, weakening their defensive back room. The team also elected to not re-sign linebacker Willie Gay Jr. who played a pivotal role for their team over the course of his career. On offense, the wide receiver position will look a lot different for Patrick Mahomes and Co.

The team’s front office came into the offseason with an emphasis on speed which was reflected in their additions. Former Arizona Cardinal first round pick Marquise Brown agreed to a one-year deal with the team worth $7 million at the start of free agency. The team went on to add at that spot a couple months later when Texas receiver Xavier Worthy was selected by the team with their first round selection in the draft. The two combined have recorded sub-4.3 40-yard dash times in their pre-draft processes, making them one of the fastest duos in the entire league.

As far as the numbers are concerned, last season the Chiefs put together top ten units on both sides of the ball. Offensively, the team was ranked 8th in yards per game (351.3) just behind the Philadelphia Eagles. Defensively, the team was ranked 2nd in yards allowed (289.8) only behind the Cleveland Browns who sat atop the league. It is easy to see this and say their could be some fluctuation on each side. Gaining a couple of these speedsters on offense along with Rashee Rice and Travis Kelce could give the team a boost on offense. It is also easy to see that the team no longer has one of the league’s top corners on their team which could hurt them a little bit going into this season.

When it comes to the all-time series history of these two teams, the Chiefs currently hold the edge winning 7 of their 12 matchups dating back to their first one in 1972. The Chiefs have won the last three games against the Saints, all of which were one-score games. The Saints will now have an opportunity to end this streak of wins by the Chiefs but it will be an uphill battle for sure.

Patrick Mahomes, Trent McDuffie excited about Chiefs’ new-look offense

Patrick Mahomes and Trent McDuffie both commented on the renaissance of the deep ball at practices during the #Chiefs’ OTAs.

During the 2024 offseason, the Kansas City Chiefs added speed to their offense, which was desperate for a dependable weapon to take the top off of opposing defenses.

By signing veteran Marquise Brown in free agency and selecting Xavier Worthy in the NFL draft, general manager Brett Veach seems to have solved Kansas City’s offensive woes, at least on paper.

During organized team activities this week, the unit has shown its confidence in the deep ball. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes and cornerback Trent McDuffie both told reporters that the Chiefs’ offense is looking more explosive during their media availability sessions on Wednesday.

“I think y’all saw today we tried to throw a few more deep passes, get back to the deep game,” Mahomes explained. “I think we’ve done a great job of mastering the intermediate and short stuff, but we want to get back to having that part of the offense as well. [Head] Coach [Andy Reid] is really pushing us to push it down the field – it’s hard to do against our defense but we’re trying to make it happen.”

McDuffie echoed these comments, emphasizing how often Mahomes is looking to take shots down the field.

“Man, [the offense] is rolling,” Mcduffie said. “Y’all saw today, Pat [Mahomes] is just back there throwing it deep play after play.”

Kansas City’s offense was tough to watch and lifeless at times last season, and there were instances when it seemed that Mahomes lacked confidence in some of his counterparts.

Mahomes and the rest of the offense are focused on flipping that narrative this season, which has been evident through the first few days of practice.

Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes on Marquise Brown: ‘He’s a good addition to the offense’

Patrick Mahomes told the media that WR Marquise Brown is “a good addition” to the Chiefs’ offense.

The Kansas City Chiefs are continuing their offseason programs with organized team activities. Wednesday marked the third day of OTAs, and the Chiefs are in the early process of defending their back-to-back Super Bowls.

Quarterback Patrick Mahomes spoke to the media after Wednesday’s practice and shared his thoughts on what he has seen from Marquise Brown this offseason.

“I’ve seen it the entire offseason from working in Texas to here,” Mahomes explained. “I remember the first day I told guys like Drue [Tranquill], he [Marquise Brown] tracks the ball well and he can really go. I’m giving him chances down the field, and he’s making the plays happen. The more plays he makes, the more we’ll continue to give him those chances. [He’s] a good addition to our offense.”

Head coach Andy Reid stated that Mahomes and Brown are developing chemistry through the early days of OTAs, and that the pair have stood out in offensive drills.

The 2024 NFL season is months away, but Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes didn’t want to wait much longer to test his arm with his new wide receiver. The three-time Super Bowl MVP was back on the field showing off his arm in a video with his newly signed teammate Marquise “Hollywood” Brown.

Mahomes posted a video of him tossing passes to Brown on his Instagram account and a highlight reel of a suspected independent workout. The video was accompanied by the Big Sean song Precision, and it appeared that the new teammates were already in sync.

The pair was spotted working out with trainer Bobby Stroupe last month, so a positive bond seems to have formed well before organized team activities.

Skyy Moore is also featured in the video. After a rough 2023, he hopes to significantly contribute to the team’s offensive plans in the upcoming season.

The Chiefs could still be in the market for a wide receiver during this month’s NFL Draft, but it’s good to see the current crop getting some early work under their belts.

Andy Reid is confident WR Marquise ‘Hollywood’ Brown’s speed will benefit Chiefs’ offense

#Chiefs head coach Andy Reid expressed his confidence that Marquise “Hollywood” Brown’s speed will benefit Kansas City’s offense

The Kansas City Chiefs are focused on improving their quality of play at the wide receiver position heading into the 2024 season. Marquise Hollywood Brown’s signing at the start of free agency is a significant step towards fixing some issues plaguing the group last season.

Chiefs head coach Andy Reid is in Florida for the NFL’s annual meetings this week. According to CBS Sports’ Jeff Kerr, he discussed Brown’s signing and its potential impact on the offense.

“I think Marquise gives you that speed element on the outside, or inside, for that matter,” Reid explained. “He’s played all the different spots. I think he’s a smart kid. He’ll complement with Rashee [Rice] and Trav [Travis Kelce] well.”

In 2023, the Chiefs’ receivers suffered from too many drops and unforced errors, leading many to criticize the personnel choices. In his rookie season, Rice emerged as a budding star in the offense, and Brown could be the proven veteran needed alongside him in the receivers room.

“I gotta see how he does. I think his main thing is just staying healthy. It’s been an issue up to this point,” said Reid. “He looks like he’s in great shape. He’s in a good frame of mind.”

Brown has a reputation for making big plays and has the personality to fit in with the many characters in the Chiefs locker room. Coaches, players, and fans have good reason to be excited about their chances at a three-peat.

Marquise ‘Hollywood’ Brown on choosing Chiefs: ‘Pat was a big part of it’

Marquise “Hollywood” Brown told reporters that Patrick Mahomes was a key reason why he chose to sign with the #Chiefs as a free agent.

The Kansas City Chiefs’ wide receivers left much to be desired last season, and general manager Brett Veach has made sure to upgrade his team’s weapons on the outside in free agency.

Kansas City inked former Baltimore Ravens and Arizona Cardinals wideout Marquise Brown to a one-year, $7 million deal last week, marking Veach’s first major investment at the position.

The 26-year-old receiver addressed the media for the first time since signing with the Chiefs on Monday, and made it clear why he chose Kansas City over other teams that were interested in him.

“Pat [Mahomes] was a big part of it, being able to play with Pat, [Head] Coach [Andy] Reid, a winning culture,” Brown explained. “The offense… I felt like I could come in and I could help, I could fit in. All those things played a part, they were strong on me so there was mutual interest, that is very appealing.”

Brown continued, elaborating on Mahomes’ skill set and what the Super Bowl MVP does that made him excited to play for the Chiefs.

“The arm talent, the deep arm talent — it speaks for itself,” Brown said. “What can’t he do? He can extend plays, whatever he has to do to win a game I feel like I’ve watched him do it. From making those big plays to methodically moving down the field, to using his feet, to playing injured. Those are all qualities and traits of a guy you want to play for.”

Brown’s excitement to play in Kansas City was evident. Paired with Andy Reid, Mahomes, Travis Kelce, and Rashee Rice, the sky is the limit for Brown as he endeavors to earn a high-dollar contract next year after playing on a one-season prove-it deal with the Chiefs.

Hooray for Hollywood: Good Guy lands with Super Bowl champs

Brown is excited to show things with the Chiefs he hasn’t shown in his career yet. He is betting on himself.

Hollywood, we hardly knew you.

Yes, we knew wide receiver Marquise (Hollywood) Brown well enough for the local chapter of the PFWA to award him the Steve Schoenfeld Good Guy Award for his cooperation with the media during the 2023 season.

However, on the field, things never worked out as expected after the Cardinals acquired him from the Ravens during the first round of the 2022 draft.

If truth be told, the Cardinals are where they are now in large part because of the six-game suspension levied on wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins shortly before the draft that year.

Coming off an 11-6 playoff season, the team was in a tough spot. Knowing they would be without Hopkins at the start of the season, rather than add center Tyler Linderbaum with their No. 1 pick, the decision was made to add Brown, who had requested a trade after a season in which he caught 91 passes for 1,008 yards and six touchdowns and would be reunited with quarterback Kyler Murray, his teammate at Oklahoma.

You know what they say about best-laid plans. As the days were being counted down to Week 7, when Brown and Hopkins would be on the field together, Brown suffered a foot injury late in Week 6 against the Seahawks and missed the next five games.

The Cardinals defeated New Orleans in Hopkins’ season debut to move to 3-4, but won one game the remainder of the season. When Brown returned, he played essentially one game with Murray, who tore his ACL early in the next game against the Patriots.

Last season, with Hopkins off to Tennessee and Murray rehabbing his knee, Brown played five games with Murray, but in two, he played limited snaps grinding through another foot injury before missing the final three games.

In all, the expected dynamic duo played a total of 10 healthy games together.

In his two Cardinals seasons that totaled 26 games, Brown had 118 receptions for 1,283 yards and seven scores.

There was the thought that he might return on a one-year, incentive-laden contract, but the lure of the Chiefs was too enticing.

Brown told the Kansas City media Monday he informed his agent as free agency approached that he was interested in the Chiefs. The interest was mutual and Brown bet on himself (and quarterback Patrick Mahomes), signing a one-year, $7 million contract that includes $6.5 million guaranteed and $4 million of incentives. His salary cap charge is $8.206 million.

“When the Chiefs are interested in you, it’s like, alright, you’ve gotta take a look at that,” Brown said. “Of course, I can go get some money at other places. But at the end of the day, it’s about winning. It’s about what I want. And I feel like everything just worked out the way it should.

“It was other opportunities out there for sure. But I’m happy with the decision. I’m happy where I’m at. And at the end of the day, I’m a kid that comes from nothing. So the amount of money I’ve made so far in my life is a blessing to me. But I’m a football player, you know? I want to play football, I want to win, I want to be part of a winner. And that’s why I’m here.”

The Chiefs released speedy receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling on Feb. 28 after a season in which he had a mere 21 receptions for 315 yards (15.0 average) and one touchdown.

As Brown concluded, “I feel like I can affect all three levels of the game — short, intermediate, and deep. I feel like at times in Baltimore and in Arizona, I showed facets of things that I can do, but not on a consistent basis. So I feel like here, it’s guys around, interchangeable. We can complete each other. And that way, the best can come out of everyone.

“Being in this system, I feel like I’ll be able to showcase my skill set. I still feel like there’s a lot of my game that I really haven’t gotten to show people. And that’s probably what I’m excited about the most being here, is to just put my best foot forward and show what I can do.”

Hopefully, for him, that foot will be healed and hold up. If it does, too bad he won’t be doing it here, but the Cardinals move on in the reset that truly began 23 months ago.

Hollywood Brown’s contract with Chiefs very reasonable

The former Cardinals WR gets a nice one-year deal that pays him up to $11 million based on playing time, touchdowns and receiving yards.

The Arizona Cardinals lost receiver Marquise Brown in free agency to the Kansas City Chiefs. Brown got a one-year deal to join the defending champions.

The details of the contract are out, shared by Albert Breer.

It is basically a one-year, $7 million deal.

He gets a $3 million signing bonus and a base salary of $3.5 million. He will get a $250,000 workout bonus for participating in the offseason program at the team facility. He can make up to $250,000 in per-game roster bonuses.

That is the $7 million.

He can earn up to $4 million in incentives.

Up to $1 million comes in touchdowns. He will make $500K for five scores, $750K for six and the full $1 million for seven touchdowns.

Up to $1.5 million comes in playing time. If he plays 45% of the Chiefs’ offensive snaps, he will make $500K. That goes up to $625K if he reaches 52.5%, then to $750K if he reaches 60% and a mac of $1.5 million for 75% of the snaps.

Another $1.5 million can be earned through yardage. He will make $500K for 500 yards, $625K for 625 yards, $750K for 750 yards and the full $1.5 million if he reaches 1,000 on the season.

These terms look like a deal the Cardinals easily could have made if they wanted him back, unless he was only willing to structure the deal like that for the defending champs and to be able to play with Patrick Mahomes.

Chiefs WR Marquise Brown is expecting big things in Andy Reid’s system

#Chiefs WR Marquise “Hollywood” Brown told reporters that he is expecting to do big things in Andy Reid’s system

The Kansas City Chiefs prioritized adding a game-changing wide receiver this offseason, and it appears they have found their guy. Marquise “Hollywood” Brown prefers to be called by his nickname, as he’s proven to thrive in the spotlight in his career.

The Chiefs’ new star wide receiver spoke with the media for the first since signing with Kansas City on Monday. He shared his reasons for choosing the Chiefs over several other offers around the league.

“I feel like I can move around and do different things and stretch the field, and there are guys here,” Brown said. “Guys [like], [Travis] Kelce, the running backs, [Rashee] Rice, [Kadarius] Toney. There are weapons here. I just feel like I can come in [and] my game can complement the guys they have here. And Coach [Andy] Reid, he’s a mastermind, and Patrick Mahomes. I’m excited to work with everyone.”

Brown was effective for a struggling Arizona Cardinals team in his last two seasons. In Arizona, Brown had 118 receptions for 1,283 yards and seven touchdowns. He looks forward to more significant numbers and less double coverage in Kansas City.

“Being in this system, I feel like I’ll be able to showcase my skill set; I still feel like there’s a lot of my game that I really haven’t got to show people,” said Brown. “That’s probably what I’m excited about the most being here; it’s to just put my best foot forward and show what I can do.”

Chiefs head coach Andy Reid has always found a way to get speedy receivers the ball and out in space throughout his legendary career. Brown opened up more about his screenshot of his text message to the franchise’s winningest coach during recruitment.

“I mean, his track record really speaks for itself. He don’t really gotta pitch you on anything,” said Brown, “Real talk about what’s gonna happen, what was going on? That’s pretty much what landed me here.”

Brown should see a significant uptick in his production playing alongside his new teammates and in the Chiefs system.

There’s just something about a bond between teammates that draws you together long after you’ve played together. When teammates from college head to the NFL, it’s kinda rare that they get the opportunity to continue playing together.

Though recent drafts have bucked the trend with Ja’Marr Chase joining Joe Burrow in Cincinnati and Jaylen Waddle joining Tua Tagovailoa in Miami, you don’t often see quarterbacks and wide receivers from college on the same team.

Kyler Murray and Marquise Brown had the opportunity to play together for two seasons in Arizona. Now a free agent, Brown is heading to Kansas City to join Creed Humphrey, Patrick Mahomes, and the Kansas City Chiefs.

Though they’re no longer teammates, the bond the two have shared over the years carried over to social media as Kyler Murray reacted to the news.

Here’s a look back at [autotag]Kyler Murray[/autotag] and [autotag]Marquise Brown[/autotag] together.
