USC recruiting in depth: Marquis Gallegos scouting report

Marquis Gallegos has the physical tools to compete at an elite level.

The Trojans picked up another big-time prospect last week with a commitment from four-star 2024 Sierra Canyon (Calif.) safety Marquis Gallegos. The four-star defensive back Gallegos chose the Trojans out of a top five that included Michigan, Notre Dame, Oklahoma and Oregon.

Gallegos has recently transferred to Sierra Canyon for his final high school season, set to play with fellow 2024 commit Xavier Jordan, a four-star wide receiver.

Gallegos recorded 96 total tackles, 11 pass defended, seven interceptions, four tackles for a loss, and a defensive touchdown for Chaminade as a junior.

He has a good skill set and the potential to rise. Gallegos reminds me of other USC safeties who possessed good height and length, having the physical makeup to play free safety at the next level.

The productive safety has been a solid run defender and tackler in high school over the past few seasons. Gallegos has the potential to rise as a high school senior and then in college if he can show more pass-coverage ability, which did improve last year.

Michigan football defensive back target sets decision date

He took an official visit to #Michigan earlier in the month. #GoBlue

Michigan football is working on several uncommitted defensive backs in the 2024 class. The biggest target is certainly Aaron Scott, the four-star cornerback out of Springfield, Ohio. But the Wolverines are also working on Florida-based safety Zaquan Patterson, Cincinnati-based corner Terhyon Nichols and Southern California safety Marquis Gallegos.

Gallegos put the maize and blue in his top group, but the Wolverines face hefty competition. He visited Ann Arbor on June 2, but has since traveled to Notre Dame, Oregon and USC. He has two predictions indicating he’ll end up with the Trojans.

We’ll know either way come June 27 at 7 p.m. EDT. That’s when he plans to announce his college decision. Oklahoma is the other school he’s considering.

Listed at 6 feet, 1 inch, 175 pounds, Gallegos is rated a four-star prospect at No. 253 overall per the 247Sports composite. The Wolverines signed a safety from California as recently as the 2022 class with now-second year defensive back Zeke Berry pledging to Michigan the day before Jim Harbaugh’s first Big Ten Championship as the coach of his alma mater.

4-star safety Marquis Gallegos puts Ducks among top schools, sets commitment date

4-star safety Marquis Gallegos puts Ducks among top schools, sets commitment date

For the second consecutive day, an elite safety prospect in the class of 2024 has named the Oregon Ducks in their top five schools. On Wednesday, it was Jakob Gude of Langston Hughes High School in Georgia, and on Thursday, it was Marquis Gallegos of Chaminade High School in California.

In comparison, Gallegos is taller than Gude, but slightly leaner at 6’1″ and 175 lbs. Similarly to Gude,  Gallegos uses his lean frame to maximize his speed, which makes him an elite ball-hawk safety (he grabbed 7 INTs in his junior year of high school). According to 247 Sports, Gallgoes is the 21st-best safety in his class, which is higher than Gude is ranked.

Along with his top schools, Gallegos announced that on Tuesday, June 27th he will announce his commitment. In addition, Gallegos will take an official visit with the Ducks just four days before his commitment date, along with a vast number of other recruits.

Gallegos is another name in the mass of DB recruits that have been wooed by the pairing of Dan Lanning and DBs coach, Demetrice Martin. Whether or not Gallegos ends up at Oregon remains to be seen, but with how many 2024 DBs have shown an interest in Oregon, the law of averages would suggest that Oregon will pick up several elite secondary players in the 2024 recruiting cycle.

Michigan football makes top group for elite 2024 safety from West Coast

Would be an interesting get if #Michigan can overtake a few other powerhouses! #GoBlue

While there are some obvious names on Michigan football’s board in 2024 who the Wolverines are working hard to secure — such as cornerbacks Bryce West and Aaron Scott, defensive tackle Justin Scott, linebacker Aaron Chiles, and more — there are some big names out there that the maize and blue are still in good standing with who have yet to make their decisions.

One such player is 2024 West Hills (Calif.) Chaminade four-star safety Marquis Gallegos, rated the No. 254 player in the country according to the 247Sports Composite.

Gallegos is starting to trim down his list of schools and while his presumed top three of USC, Notre Dame, and Oregon all did make the cut, so did Michigan, along with Oklahoma.

Gallegos did take an official visit to Ann Arbor on the first weekend of the month, and has since visited South Bend. He’ll stay home and take in USC this weekend before heading to Eugene to see the Ducks on June 23.

He also has offers from Colorado, Nebraska, Tennessee, Texas A&M as well as others.

Michigan football offers 2024 4-star from West Coast

This is an interesting offer! #GoBlue

2024 football recruiting is heating up, especially for Michigan football. Though usurped by rival Ohio State for the No. 2 position nationally, the Wolverines are still sitting pretty at No. 3 in the country with 11 commits.

And though the board has looked pretty good in terms of the prospects the maize and blue are chasing, they’re still expanding to seek out other high-end recruits who may choose to wear a winged helmet in the future.

On Wednesday evening, Michigan made another offer to a 2024 prospect, West Hills (Calif.) Chaminade four-star safety Marquis Gallegos, he announced via his Twitter account. He’s rated the No. 245 player in the country, per the 247Sports Composite.

There are no predictions, of yet, as to where Gallegos will end up. He has an impressive offer sheet that includes USC, Notre Dame, Oregon, Texas A&M, Tennessee, Michigan State, Oklahoma, Nebraska, Colorado, UCLA, and Washington.

He’s listed at 6-foot-1, 175-pounds, and also plays wide receiver at the high school level.
