Colts worked out pair of WRs, veteran DT

The Colts worked out a pair of WRs and a veteran DT on Tuesday.

The Indianapolis Colts held a workout for two wide receivers and a veteran defensive tackle, according to the league’s transaction wire Tuesday.

Among the players who worked out for the Colts included wide receivers Marquez Callaway and Bryan Edwards along with defensive tackle Marlon Davidson.

Considering the shoulder injury Alec Pierce is dealing with, it makes sense the Colts are seeing what is available on the market. They also signed Juwann Winfree to the active roster Tuesday so they may be preparing for Pierce to miss some time.

Working out Davidson likely coincides with the suspension that hit Grover Stewart for violating the league’s performance-enhancing drug policy.

Davidson, 25, was a second-round pick in the 2020 NFL draft out of Auburn by the Atlanta Falcons. He missed the 2022 season due to a knee injury and spent the offseason with the San Francisco 49ers. In 19 career games (one start), Davidson has 29 tackles (14 solo), one tackle for loss, one quarterback hit, one sack and one interception.

Raiders sign former Saints, Broncos WR Marquez Callaway to practice squad

The Broncos signed Phillip Dorsett before Raiders could place him on the practice squad, so the Raiders took a Broncos castoff instead.

Tuesday, the Raiders cut Phillip Dorsett with the hopes of bringing him back onto the practice squad. They wouldn’t get that chance because the Broncos swooped in and signed the veteran receiver to the active roster. So, the Raiders grabbed one of the receivers the Broncos waived and added him to their practice squad instead.

The Raiders have signed Marquez Callaway to the practice squad according to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler.

The 6-2, 204-pound receiver spent the past three seasons in New Orleans. He had a down season in 2022 after a career year in 2021 in which he led the team with 46 receptions for 698 yards and six touchdowns.

Honestly, with the problems at QB in New Orleans, it’s a wonder he ever had the numbers he did.  He was catching passes from four different quarterbacks — Trevor Siemien, Jameis Winston, Taysom Hill, and Ian Book. Last season it was three QB’s, with Andy Dalton leading the way along with Winston and Hill.

Regardless, Callaway didn’t make the Broncos’ roster and went unclaimed off waivers, making him available to be signed by the Raiders.

Callaway is still just 25 years of age. He hails from Georgia and played college ball at Tennessee.

His addition to the practice squad, brings the number to 16, which means the Raiders have one more slot yet still open or yet to be announced.

Could Sean Payton resolve the Saints’ wide receiver dilemma?

Could Sean Payton solve the Saints’ wide receiver dilemma? An injury to one of his Broncos starters could spark a reunion with an old favorite:

The New Orleans Saints have a new problem with their wide receiver corps: too many young, promising players and not enough roster spots to go around. Especially with respected veterans like Tre’Quan Smith in the mix. Could Denver Broncos coach Sean Payton step in and solve the dilemma? A last-minute injury to star wideout Jerry Jeudy could prompt Payton into yet another trade with his former team, and someone like Smith could make sense.

Would New Orleans bite? The Saints kept nine receivers in the building last year (six on the roster and three more on the practice squad), and they’re down to ten receivers ahead of roster cuts next week. So someone is getting left out in the cold. But who?

Could it be Shaq Davis? The undrafted rookie out of South Carolina State has rare size and speed, and he’s done well in Marques Colston’s old role as an oversized slot receiver in two preseason games. But he’s on the roster bubble along with experienced pros like Smith, Kawaan Baker, and returns specialist Lynn Bowden Jr.

If the Saints can move one of those receivers and get a draft pick or other compensation back in the process, it’s worth considering. Anyone signed to the practice squad must clear waivers next week first, and it isn’t a sure thing that a youngster like Davis would pass through unscathed.

Chris Olave, Michael Thomas, Rashid Shaheed, and A.T. Perry are locks to make the roster. Keith Kirkwood has done enough too and the Saints have given him enough deference with rest days to suggest he’s safe. That leaves just one spot on the 53-man roster. Smith has hung around for years as a blocking specialist with limited receiving upside, with the coaching staff (Payton’s coaching staff in particular) valuing his physicality and hard-nosed style of play, despite modest production with the ball in his hands.

But Smith has an injury of his own. It’s a complicating factor — he hasn’t practiced since Aug. 6 due to a groin muscle issue, missing each of the first two preseason games along the way. He hasn’t been able to compete with guys like Kirkwood and Davis for a roster spot so he’s just getting by on his reputation with the coaches. That might not be enough.

It’s also a complicating factor in potential trade talks with the Broncos. Smith was a player Payton respected highly in New Orleans, but he won’t be able to reunite with Smith if the receiver can’t pass a physical. But between a draft-day trade for tight end Adam Trautman and ongoing speculation linking the kicker-needy Broncos to embattled Saints kicker Wil Lutz, it would make sense for Payton to come calling again, even if it’s not for Smith.

Payton already brought former Saints receivers Marquez Callaway and Lil’Jordan Humphrey with him to Denver. It would make sense for him to look to New Orleans again to help keep his new offense on schedule while Jeudy recovers. If Smith is too injured to pass a physical and process a trade, Kirkwood is another player to watch. He got his start with the Saints, too, and he has a more dynamic athletic profile than Smith, so he could be better suited to picking up Jeudy’s playbook.

Kirkwood has played well enough this summer to make the team, but that means the Broncos would need to make a better offer than they would for a player the Saints may intend on releasing anyway (like Smith). Denver owns a pair of fifth-round selections in 2024 (one of them from the New York Jets) and either of them would be a good return for a receiver who might rank fourth on the Saints’ depth chart when everyone is healthy. If trading Kirkwood to the Broncos opens a spot on the 53-man roster for Davis and helps pad out New Orleans’ future draft picks in the process, well: that view might be worth the climb.

8 ex-Saints reunited with Sean Payton on Broncos’ roster

Broncos coach Sean Payton has brought in eight former Saints who played for him in New Orleans. Here’s the full list.

Since becoming the Denver Broncos’ head coach in February, Sean Payton has signed several former New Orleans Saints. The veteran coach also traded for a former Saints during the draft, acquiring tight end Adam Trautman in April.

The ex-Saints coach has also signed seven former New Orleans players as free agents. In addition to Trautman, Payton also brought in fellow tight end Chris Manhertz, who is known for his blocking ability.

Denver has also signed former Saints wide receivers Marquez Callaway and Lil’Jordan Humphrey, plus running backs Tony Jones and Dwayne Washington. To block for those running backs, fullback Michael Burton was also signed.

On special teams, Payton signed kicker Brett Maher, who kicked for the Saints in 2021.

Additionally, the Broncos have a ninth former Saint, defensive lineman Jordan Jackson, but he played in New Orleans last fall when Payton was taking a break from coaching.

Here’s a look at each former Saint who reunited with Broncos coach Sean Payton in Denver.

2 ex-Saints WRs getting another chance under Sean Payton with Broncos

Reunited with Sean Payton, Broncos wide receivers Marquez Callaway and Lil’Jordan Humphrey will aim to impress during preseason.

After joining the Denver Broncos in February, new head coach Sean Payton went on to sign several former New Orleans Saints players, including a pair of wide receivers.

Payton signed Marquez Callaway, who had a breakout season under Payton in 2021, and Lil’Jordan Humphrey, who started four games in 2021. Both receivers will now get a second chance with the coach on a new team.

“They have size, they understand the offense, and they are guys that have played for us for different reasons,” Payton said when asked about Callaway and Humphrey on Aug. 4. “Marquez played when Michael Thomas got injured and was out. Lil’Jordan played quite a bit. He was one of those players on the practice squad that would come up in the event of an injury.

“They are familiar with the system. They’re big, but they are still getting through it right now. I’m waiting to see something from both of those two guys. I’m expecting to see a little bit more. [It was] just from an experience standpoint.”

Callaway played all 17 games in 2021, earning 11 starts. He hauled in 46 receptions for 698 yards and six touchdowns in those contests. That same season, Humphrey caught 13 passes for 249 yards and two scores in 10 games (four starts).

Both players had the best seasons of their respective careers under Payton in 2021, the coach’s final year in New Orleans. Now reunited with Payton, the receivers will aim to impress during preseason this summer.

Broncos’ updated WR depth chart after Tim Patrick injury

Following the Tim Patrick injury, Marvin Mims could be poised to step up. Here is our projected wide receiver depth chart for the Broncos.

The Denver Broncos’ wide receiver depth chart lost two players on Monday after Tim Patrick tore his Achilles and KJ Hamler was waived with a non-football illness designation.

Following the loss of Patrick and Hamler, Jerry Jeudy and Courtland Sutton remain the team’s top two receivers going into 2023. Jeudy and Sutton also served as the top WRs in 2022 after Patrick missed the entire year with a torn ACL. Hamler battled various injuries last year and missed 10 games.

Behind Jeudy and Sutton, the top candidate to serve as the WR3 is rookie Marvin Mims, a second-round pick out of Oklahoma who will undoubtedly see his role increase following Patrick’s injury.

After those top three, several players will be competing for the final WR spots this summer. Jalen Virgil impressed last offseason and played in nine games in 2022; Marquez Callaway had a breakout season under Sean Payton with the New Orleans Saints in 2021; Brandon Johnson played in eight games last year and Kendall Hinton is a fan favorite.

The remaining WRs — Taylor Grimes, Montrell Washington, Lil’Jordan Humphrey, Michael Bandy and Nick Williams — will all face long odds to make the 53-man roster this summer. Our projected wide receiver depth chart going into the second week of camp can be seen below.

Broncos Wide Receiver Depth Chart

WR1 WR2 WR3
Jerry Jeudy Courtland Sutton Marvin Mims
Jalen Virgil Brandon Johnson Marquez Callaway
Kendall Hinton Michael Bandy Montrell Washington
Lil’Jordan Humphrey Taylor Grimes Nick Williams

Marquez Callaway could be a sleeper to watch at Broncos training camp

Marquez Callaway had a breakout season under Sean Payton in 2021 after a great training camp. Now he’ll reunite with Payton in Denver.

[connatix div_id=”3f8b015acdd24c648befc5d5dac47469″ player_id=”afe1e038-d3c2-49c0-922d-6511a229f69c” cid=”7cbcea0d-4ce2-4c75-9a8d-fbe02a192c24″]

Marquez Callaway seemingly came out of nowhere with the New Orleans Saints in 2021 to lead the team in receiving yards (698) and receiving touchdowns (six).

Callaway had that breakout year in 2021 after a relatively quiet rookie season (21 receptions for 213 yards and no scores). In his second offseason, the receiver stepped up at training camp and quickly emerged as the team’s No. 1 receiver.

“He had one of those training camps that surprised us a little bit,” Payton said of the receiver’s breakout summer. “Marquez made a real strong impression.”

Callaway was a former undrafted free agent, and Payton has reiterated several times this offseason that any player can stand out during training camp.

“[O]nce they get here  —once we’ve drafted [players], we’ve signed free agents and we’ve tried players out — once they get here, how they got here is of no importance to us,” Payton said. “That’s the art of just procuring players. Once they’re here, we’re going to go by what we see.”

After Payton left the Saints following the 2021 season, Callaway saw his role reduced in 2022 as he totaled just 16 receptions for 158 yards and one score. Now reunited with Payton in Denver, Callaway will face tough competition to make the team’s 53-man roster.

The first thing Payton wants Callaway to do is lose some weight.

“His weight is a little high right now and he’ll get that down,” Payton said. “I kind of like the skill players at that right out-of-college weight. Occasionally they’ll get over that, but he’s someone that found a niche [in 2021] and then all of a sudden, he’s in the starting lineup. He’s in a good group. I think we’ve got some depth there, and we’ve got good competition there.”

Callaway’s experience with Payton will undoubtedly help his chances of making the team, but the 25-year-old receiver will need another impressive training camp to secure his spot.

Broncos’ projected WR depth chart after the NFL draft

Here is our projected wide receiver depth chart for the Broncos following the NFL draft.

WR1 WR2 WR3 WR4
Tim Patrick Jerry Jeudy Courtland Sutton Marvin Mims
Brandon Johnson Jalen Virgil Marquez Callaway  Kendall Hinton
Lil’Jordan Humphrey Taylor Grimes Dallas Daniels KJ Hamler
Montrell Washington

After the Denver Broncos traded up in the second round of the NFL draft to select Marvin Mims last week, we have a new wide receiver depth chart projection.

Barring a trade, Patrick, Jeudy, Sutton and Mims all seem to be locks. Callaway, Virgil, Hinton and Johnson also seemingly have strong odds to make the team, but Denver will run out of roster spots.

Last year, the Broncos carried six wide receivers on their initial 53-man roster. If they do that again in 2023, Callaway, Virgil, Hinton and Johnson could all be competing for the final two spots.

Right now, Hamler and Washington seem to be in danger of not making the team following the arrival of Mims, a speedy deep threat who provides a spark as a returner. Humphrey and undrafted free agents Grimes and Daniels will also face long odds to make the active roster.

A lot can change between now and the end of training camp, and the possibility of a WR trade will linger given that Denver has so much depth at the position. For now, though, the above depth chart breaks down how we see the Broncos’ current WR room.

Check out these highlights of new Broncos WR Marquez Callaway

Marquez Callaway had a good season under Sean Payton with the Saints in 2021. He should be a nice depth WR for the Broncos.

The Denver Broncos recently signed wide receiver Marquez Callaway to a one-year contract for the 2023 NFL season. Callaway is a huge sign for the Broncos, as the upcoming fourth-year receiver spent two seasons under the new Broncos head coach Sean Payton in 2020 and 2021.

Under Payton, Callaway tallied 67 catches for 905 yards, and six touchdowns. He had his best season in 2021, totaling 46 catches for 698 yards and six touchdowns.

With Callaway’s familiarity in Payton’s system, he can be a significant piece in helping other Broncos players with the installation of the offense during and offseason. Plus, at 6-2, 204 pounds, Callaway gives the Broncos a physical wideout with size.

Payton’s offense is known for its high-octane scoring and explosive plays. With Callaway in the mix, he gives Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson a new piece to his arsenal of weapons, joining Jerry Jeudy and Cortland Sutton.

Below, check out some of Callaway’s highlights during his time with the Saints:

If the video does not play here, you can watch it on YouTube.

Broncos fans will get their first look at Callaway when the team holds training camp practices open to the public this summer.

Full list of 2022 New Orleans Saints players who signed with new teams

It’s been a busy two weeks of free agency for the New Orleans Saints, who have lost a number of players to other teams. They’ve managed to hold onto several of their own free agents, though, and many players from the 2022 team are still in limbo waiting to see where they’ll land in 2023 (you can find the full list here).

Here’s a quick glance at where each of New Orleans’ departures are going to be playing in the upcoming season. We’ll take one last look at the former members of the black and gold as the Saints focus on the players still available to them:
