Cowboys interviewing new DC candidate with ties to McCarthy, Quinn

From @ToddBrock24f7: Marquand Manuel played for Mike McCarthy’s Packers and coached under Dan Quinn in 2 different cities; he’s up for the job Quinn just left.

In the pool of candidates to replace former Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn, the team has included a few fish with big names and splashy reputations. But one interviewee has apparently slipped in, a little under the radar perhaps, who has connections both to the man he’d report to in Dallas and the man whose office he’d be taking over.

Marquand Manuel was reportedly set to interview to be the Cowboys’ defensive coordinator on Thursday, joining a list that- so far- includes former NFL head coaches Mike Zimmer, Ron Rivera, and Rex Ryan, as well as current Dallas defensive line coach Aden Durde.

Manuel, 44, has served as the New York Jets’ safeties coach for three seasons. Prior to that, he’d been with three other NFL teams in various capacities over the past decade and enjoyed an eight-year career as a player.

A sixth-round draft pick by Cincinnati in 2002, Manuel spent two years as a Bengal and then two years as a Seahawk, making a start in Super Bowl XL. A month later, he signed as a free agent in 2006 with the Packers under their newly-hired head coach, Mike McCarthy. Manuel started all 16 games that season for Green Bay.

His playing days lasted three more seasons- one each in Carolina, Denver, and Detroit. After spending two years out of the game, Manuel returned to Seattle in 2012 as an assistant special teams coach. He returned to the Seahawks staff the following season, as a defensive assistant under new coordinator Dan Quinn, and the two helped lead the Legion of Boom defense to a victory in Super Bowl XLVIII.

Manuel stayed with Quinn in Seattle one more year and then followed him to Atlanta. There, he worked his way up from defensive backs coach in 2015 to secondary coach in 2016 for the team’s trip to Super Bowl LI, and finally to defensive coordinator in 2017.

He left the Falcons after the 2018 campaign and next spent the 2020 season as the Eagles’ defensive backs coach before finally signing on with the Jets in 2021 under head coach Robert Saleh.

How Manuel might fit into a ranking of the other candidates the Cowboys have spoken to isn’t immediately clear, but he brings a lot of defensive experience and has been around an impressive list of coaching talent.

The Cowboys were said to have wanted to get Manuel’s interview on the books before owner Jerry Jones and others leave for Las Vegas to attend NFL Honors on Thursday night and Super Bowl LVIII on Sunday.

Jets safeties coach Marquand Manuel to interview for Jaguars defensive coordinator job Thursday

Jets safeties coach Marquand Manuel will interview for the Jaguars vacant defensive coordinator job Thursday

A Jets assistant is getting an interview this week during this coaching cycle but it may not be who you initially would expect.

Safeties coach Marquand Manuel will interview Thursday for the vacant defensive coordinator position the Jacksonville Jaguars under head coach Doug Pederson. This according to Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.

Manuel just wrapped up his third season coaching the Jets’ safeties. He has been a coach in the NFL since 2012, with stops in Seattle, Atlanta and Philadelphia — Manuel worked under Pederson in 2020. Manuel has two years of experience as a defensive coordinator, having held the role with the Falcons in 2017 and 2018 under head coach Dan Quinn.

Jacksonville fired defensive cornerback Mike Caldwell following a 9-8 season that saw the Jaguars lose five of their final six games to fall out of the playoffs.

Every coach reportedly connected to Jaguars’ defensive coordinator job

The Jaguars are on the hunt for a new defensive coordinator after firing Mike Caldwell earlier in January.

The Jacksonville Jaguars are on the hunt for a new person behind the wheel of their defense. After allowing at least 28 points in four of their last six games during a disastrous tailspin that ended their 2023 season, the team fired defensive coordinator Mike Caldwell.

While the team wasted no time lining up interviews, it’s also possible the Jaguars’ search for someone to fill the vacancy could take some time. As head coaching positions fill up, some of the high profile coaches who missed out on those jobs could be prime candidates to join Doug Pederson’s staff.

For now, there’s still a handful of names who have already emerged as potential defensive coordinator choices for the Jaguars.

Here’s a running list of every coach who has reportedly received interest from Jacksonville in the search for Caldwell’s replacement:

6 candidates to be the Jaguars’ next defensive coordinator

There are a few intriguing names who could get a call about the Jaguars’ defensive coordinator vacancy.

The Jacksonville Jaguars are starting over on defense. On Monday, the team fired defensive coordinator Mike Caldwell and just about every other defensive coach on the team’s staff.

As the team begins its hunt for a new face to lead the way, there’s plenty of reason to believe it’ll be a relatively attractive opening for coaching candidates.

For one, no pass rushing tandem finished with more sacks than the 27.5 that Josh Allen and Travon Walker combined for in 2023. While Allen, who led the way with 17.5 sacks, is scheduled to became a free agent, it’d be a surprise if the Jaguars didn’t use the franchise tag, at the very least, to keep him on the roster.

After that, it largely depends on what you think of young players like cornerback Tyson Campbell, safety Andre Cisco, and linebacker Devin Lloyd who have all shown great things at times, but have struggled with consistency early in their careers.

Here are six coaches who could draw the Jaguars’ eye as they try to fill their defensive coordinator void and turn their young defense into one of the NFL’s best units:

Report: Texans interview Jets safeties coach Marquand Manuel for defensive coordinator

The Houston Texans have interviewed New York Jets safeties coach Marquand Manuel for their defensive coordinator vacancy.

The Houston Texans continue to look across the league for their new defensive coordinator,

According to Aaron Wilson from KPRC-TV, the Texans have interviewed New York Jets safeties coach Marquand Manuel to be the defensive coordinator on rookie coach DeMeco Ryans’ coaching staff.

Manuel has been the safeties coach with the Jets since 2021, the first year that Robert Saleh took over as coach. Saleh previously worked with the San Francisco 49ers from 2017-20 as defensive coordinator, overlapping with Ryans’ tenure with the NFC West club from 2017-22.

In 2022, the Jets’ passing defense finished third in the NFL and second in the NFL in opposing passer rating.

Ranking our top 4 candidates for the Panthers’ DC job

Here are our top four candidates for the Panthers’ defensive coordinator job.

Now that the Carolina Panthers have landed their head coach in Frank Reich, it’s time to start scooping up his staff. And one of the biggest, if not the biggest hole sits at the defensive coordinator position.

So, let’s sort our top contenders before the Panthers, of course, ultimately do that for us.

Panthers reportedly impressed by DC candidate Marquand Manuel

Per ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, Marquand Manuel may be a “name to watch” in the Panthers’ defensive coordinator search.

The Carolina Panthers’ search for a defensive coordinator hasn’t been as easy to peg as their search for a head coach. But now, we might have a little bit of clarity.

According to ESPN senior NFL reporter Jeremy Fowler, Marquand Manuel has become “a name to watch” for the opening. Fowler reports that the New York Jets safeties coach impressed in his interview with the team, even prior to their hiring of Frank Reich.

Manuel, a former sixth-round pick of the Cincinnati Bengals, began his professional playing career in 2002. The University of Miami defensive back would go on to play eight seasons in the NFL, including one with the Panthers in 2007—where he appeared in all 16 games with a pair of starts.

He transitioned to the sidelines starting in 2012, as an assistant special teams coach for the Seattle Seahawks. Manuel then moved on to the Atlanta Falcons, where he served as the secondary coach from 2015 to 2016 and then the defensive coordinator from 2017 to 2018.

The Panthers, in addition to Manuel, have also interviewed Vic Fangio and Kris Richard for the vacany.

Panthers DC candidate profile: Marquand Manuel

Carolina Panthers defensive coordinator candidate profile: Marquand Manuel

The Carolina Panthers’ search for a defensive coordinator has not been as extensive as their one for a new head coach. But there’s certainly no shortage of capable candidates—and New York Jets defensive backs coach Marquand Manuel is certainly among them.

Manuel spent eight years in the league as a safety, a run that actually included a stop in Carolina. He played in all 16 games, with a pair of starts, for the Panthers in 2007.

While not the most decorated player, the 2002 sixth-round pick survived in a brutal league for nearly a decade—exemplifying his football intelligence and discipline to the game. Those traits, obviously, would be admired in any coaching position.

Three years after his final NFL game, Manuel joined the Seattle Seahawks as an assistant special teams coach in 2012. He was then promoted to defensive assistant a season later and to assistant secondary coach in 2014—helping further develop the daunting “Legion of Boom.”

Manuel followed his defensive coordinator Dan Quinn to the Atlanta Falcons, where he coached up a scrappy secondary between 2015 and 2016. He was named the team’s defensive coordinator the year following the infamous Super Bowl LI loss, going on to bolster a shaky defensive unit into a steady one.

He was let go after the 2018 campaign and landed with the Philadelphia Eagles as their defensive backs coach in 2020. Manuel, who’s since headed the Jets safeties going back to 2021, has proven a solid defensive play caller and talent developer.

Panthers 2023 defensive coordinator search tracker

Join us right here as we keep track of every candidate in the Panthers’ search for a new defensive coordinator.

Well, it’s time to start tracking more than just potential head coaches for the Carolina Panthers.

Here’s our running tally of every candidate to pop up in the team’s search for a new defensive coordinator.

Panthers request to interview Jets S coach Marquand Manuel for coordinator position

As first reported by ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, the Panthers have requested to interview Jets safeties coach Marquand Manuel for a coordinator job.

The Carolina Panthers are currently quite deep in their growing search for a new head coach. But they will, of course, need more than just a new head coach.

As first reported by Jeremy Fowler of ESPN, the Panthers have requested an interview with New York Jets safeties coach Marquand Manuel for a coordinator position. Given Manuel’s background, this is—presumably—regarding Carolina’s defensive coordinator job.

A defensive back in his playing days, the Miami native and University of Florida product was selected in the sixth round of the 2002 NFL draft by the Cincinnati Bengals. He’d go on to play eight seasons in the NFL, including one with the Panthers in 2007—where he appeared in all 16 games with a pair of starts.

His transition as a coach began three years after his final game, when he was hired as an assistant special teams coach for the Seattle Seahawks in 2012. After assuming roles as a defensive assistant and assistant secondary coach over the next two campaigns, he moved on to Atlanta—where he’d serve as the secondary coach between 2015 and 2016 and the defensive coordinator between 2017 and 2018.

Manuel then took up jobs as the defensive backs coach for the Philadelphia Eagles in 2020 and, most recently, as the safeties coach with the Jets beginning in 2021.
