5 takeaways from Mel Tucker’s pre-Maryland media call

Mel Tucker spoke to the media on Tuesday before the Spartans clash with the Maryland Terrapins this weekend.

Michigan State will be playing against Maryland this Saturday in what the Big Ten Conference has called, ‘Champions Week’. It will be the Spartans eighth game of the 2020 season.

The Spartans are 2-5 heading into the contest in Mel Tucker’s first year as the head coach. In a pivotal year to build the culture and team Tucker wants, the Spartans were very fortunate to get a season.

Mel Tucker took to the media zoom call this week to discuss some of the pressing issues regarding the Michigan State program going into the final week. Here are five takeaways from his call:

Payton Thorne to start at QB for MSU Football vs. Maryland

For the second straight week Payton Thorne will be the head man at quarterback for the Spartans. There has been a lot of controversy surrounding the quarterback room this season for Michigan State, but it is now officially Thorne’s chance to show what he has.

Thorne made his first career start this past week against Penn State in Beaver Stadium. In his first start, Thorne threw for 325 yards and three touchdowns, giving the Spartans passing game a much-needed boost.

Michigan State will travel to College Park to face off with Maryland in Thorne’s second career start. Thorne, a redshirt freshman, is trying to solidify his spot as the Spartans starting quarterback for the years to come. These two starts will be a great opportunity for Thorne to earn the trust of the coaching staff, as well as brewing excitement for the fans.

Michigan State faces off with Maryland this Saturday at 7:30 p.m. EST. on the Big Ten Network.
