Broncos continue shuffling backfield

The Broncos hope to have Mike Boone back on the field this week.

The Denver Broncos’ backfield shuffling continues.

Denver waived running back Devine Ozigbo from the active roster on Monday, presumably with plans to re-sign him to the team’s 16-player practice squad on Wednesday. After bumping Ozigbo down from the active roster, the Broncos now have just two running backs on the 53-man roster.

This is presumably a sign that Denver expects running back Mike Boone (ankle) to return from injured reserve this week. Boone is expected to return to practice Wednesday and he’s eligible to be activated to the 53-man roster.

Denver also waived running back Tyreik McAllister and wide receiver Kaden Davis from the practice squad on Tuesday. Davis was waived to make room for new cornerback Lamar Jackson; McAllister was waived likely to make room for the return of Ozigbo.

After cutting Melvin Gordon last week, the Broncos leaned on Latavius Murray on Sunday. Murray rushed 13 times for 92 yards in his first start of the season in Week 12. Marlon Mack and Boone are now poised to serve as the team’s backup running backs going forward.

Gordon, meanwhile, has joined the Kansas City Chiefs, giving him an opportunity to play against Denver two times later this season.

Broncos’ updated RB depth chart without Melvin Gordon

After cutting Melvin Gordon and losing Chase Edmonds to injury, Broncos will lean on Latavius Murray with Marlon Mack mixed in this week.

The Denver Broncos cut running back Melvin Gordon on Monday in a move that will shake up the team’s backfield depth chart.

Denver also lost running back Chase Edmonds to a high ankle sprain this week, making the team even thinner at the position.

So where does that leave the Broncos’ backfield?

Right now, Latavius Murray is the team’s starter by default, a role he will presumably hold for the rest of the season. The only other healthy running back on the 53-man roster right now is Marlon Mack, so he will serve as the RB2 at least this week.

Going forward, Mike Boone will be eligible to return from injured reserve next week, and Edmonds figures to factor into the rotation once he returns from his injury. For the moment, though, fantasy football managers should expect a heavy dose of Murray with Mack mixed in.

It wouldn’t be surprising to see the Broncos elevate running back Devine Ozigbo from the practice squad this week. Denver might also consider adding a free agent or poaching a RB off another team’s practice squad. Even if the Broncos do make a move at the position, though, Murray is the clear leader in Denver’s backfield going forward.

Broncos injuries: RB Chase Edmonds (ankle) out ‘multiple weeks’

Broncos RB Chase Edmonds is set to miss ‘multiple weeks’ with a high ankle sprain.

The Denver Broncos’ running back depth will be tested after the team waived veteran Melvin Gordon on Monday.

In addition to parting ways with Gordon, the Broncos have also lost running back Chase Edmonds for “multiple weeks” to a high ankle sprain, NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported Monday.

With Javonte Williams and Mike Boone already on injured reserve, the team’s only healthy running backs remaining on the 53-man roster now are Latavius Murray and Marlon Mack. Denver also has Devine Ozigbo available on the practice squad.

Elsewhere on the injury front, Broncos defensive lineman Jonathan Harris is also set to miss “a few games” after suffering a knee injury against the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday, according to KUSA-TV’s Mike Klis.

Denver’s defensive line losing Harris could mean more rotational snaps for rookies Matt Henningsen and Eyioma Uwazurike. The Broncos also have defensive lineman McTelvin Agim available on the practice squad.

What kind of role will Chase Edmonds have with the Broncos?

Broncos GM George Paton hinted that Melvin Gordon and Latavius Murray are still the top two RBs in Denver.

Lost in the hoopla of the Bradley Chubb trade last week was the fact that the Denver Broncos also acquired running back Chase Edmonds from the Miami Dolphins in addition to draft picks.

The trade has Broncos fans (and fantasy football managers) now wondering what kind of role Edmonds will have in Denver’s offense.

Due to injured reserve rules, Mike Boone will have to sit out at least two more games after Denver’s bye. That presumably makes Edmonds at least the third-string running back by default, at least for the time being.

Because he is a younger running back with upside, some fans and pundits have speculated that Edmonds and Latavius Murray could emerge as the team’s top two backs with Melvin Gordon being related to the bench.

During his post-trade deadline press conference last week, general manager George Paton insisted that is not the case.

“It doesn’t affect Melvin at all,” Paton said last week. “It just brings more competition. I think Edmonds complements what we have. He’s a little different than what we have in Melvin. We like Melvin and he’s still going to be our starter. He and Latavius will rotate. This will be another piece to the puzzle. This will be a good compliment.”

Complicating the projected depth chart is Marlon Mack, who was signed by Denver off the San Francisco 49ers’ practice squad last week. If Paton’s comments are truthful, it seems that Gordon and Murray will be the top two backs with Edmonds and Mack below them on the depth chart.

So for now, Edmonds does not seem poised to have a very big role. Backfield rotations can change quickly, though, so we’ll be watching the team’s running back snaps going forward.

Broncos sign RB Marlon Mack off 49ers’ practice squad

After losing Mike Boone to an ankle injury, the Broncos brought in RB Marlon Mack.

After losing backup running back Mike Boone to an ankle injury on Sunday, the Denver Broncos signed Marlon Mack off the San Francisco 49ers’ practice squad, according to a report from ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Boone seems unlikely to travel to England this week for the team’s London showdown with the Jacksonville Jaguars, much means Mack is poised to serve as Denver’s third-string running back behind Melvin Gordon and Latavius Murray.

Mack (6-0, 212 pounds) entered the league as a fourth-round draft pick out of South Florida with the Colts in 2017. After a five-year run in Indianapolis, Mack had stints with the Houston Texans and San Francisco 49ers before joining the Broncos.

Mack has rushed 67 times for 2,484 yards and 20 touchdowns through 49 career games. He also has 57 receptions for 448 yards and two more scores on his resume.

Denver had an open spot on the 53-man roster for Mack after placing outside linebacker Aaron Patrick (torn ACL) on injured reserve last week.

49ers sign RB Tevin Coleman to active roster

The 49ers have signed RB Tevin Coleman to the active roster and added RB Marlon Mack and K Sam Sloman to the practice squad.

The San Francisco 49ers have announced several roster moves ahead of their Week 6 matchup against the Atlanta Falcons.

The 49ers have promoted running back Tevin Coleman to the active roster from the team’s practice squad. San Francisco has also signed running back Marlon Mack and kicker Sam Sloman to the practice squad. They released quarterback Kurt Benkert in a corresponding move.

Coleman has appeared in two games this season, where he’s rushed for 23 yards on eight carries with a touchdown and added three catches for 44 yards and a touchdown.

The 49ers released Mack on Tuesday to make room for Coleman. But they wasted no time signing Mack to the practice squad. He appeared in two games this season, where he only played five snaps on special teams, including recovering a fumble.

Sloman, a seventh-round pick in 2020, appeared in seven games with the Los Angeles Rams in 2020, where he connected on eight of 11 field goals (72.8%) and 18 of 21 extra points (85.7%).

Last season, Sloman appeared in one game with the Tennessee Titans and also was on the Pittsburgh Steelers practice squad.

49ers roster moves: RB Marlon Mack released, DL T.Y. McGill added to practice squad

The #49ers made a couple roster moves Tuesday, including the release of RB Marlon Mack.

The 49ers on Tuesday announced a pair of roster moves. Running back Marlon Mack was released after a brief stint on the active roster, and veteran defensive lineman T.Y. McGill was added to the practice squad.

Mack joined the 49ers after RB Elijah Mitchell was injured in Week 1. He was initially on the practice squad before being elevated to the active roster. He was inactive Sunday in Carolina and played in five special teams snaps in the two games he did play. NFL Media’s Tom Pelissero reported the 49ers expect to re-sign Mack to their practice squad

His release could indicate a couple things. Either RB Tyrion Davis-Price is nearing a return after suffering a high ankle sprain in the second week of the season. The injury was supposed to keep him out four-to-six weeks. The 49ers could also be planning to promote RB Tevin Coleman to the active roster after his two-touchdown day against the Panthers.

McGill will give San Francisco some in-house DL depth while Arik Armstead and Javon Kinlaw work through injuries. Akeem Spence was promoted to the active roster Saturday which opened a spot on the practice squad. McGill in seven NFL seasons has played in 46 games with zero starts with the Colts, Chargers, Eagles, Browns and Vikings. He has 5.5 sacks and 35 tackles in his career. McGill was part of six-player workout for the 49ers on Monday.

49ers to add RB Marlon Mack to active roster

The #49ers are bringing Marlon Mack up to their active roster. He might wind up being RB2 Sunday night.

The 49ers are already dipping into their practice squad for running back help. In Week 1 they lost running back Elijah Mitchell for two months to an MCL sprain. In Week 2 they lost RB Tyrion Davis-Price for a few weeks to a high ankle sprain. Now with the RB spot running thin on their active roster, they’re elevating RB Marlon Mack after he joined the practice squad ahead of Week 2.

Mack will be either the 49ers’ second or third RB behind Jeff Wilson Jr. Davis-Price held the RB2 role vs. the Seahawks while undrafted rookie Jordan Mason played solely on special teams. It’ll be a battle in practice between Mack and Mason for carries Sunday night in Denver.

In 47 career games, Mack has rushed 567 times for 2,484 yards and 20 touchdowns. An Achilles tear in Week 1 of the 2020 derailed him after he put up a career-best 1,091 yards and eight touchdowns in the 2019 campaign. Now he could get a chance in his second full season removed from his injury to get his NFL career back on track.

San Francisco could be adding another running back to the practice squad to take Mack’s spot. They worked out a host of players Tuesday, but didn’t bring in any running backs. After Mitchell’s injury they brought in RBs Tevin Coleman, Devonta Freeman, Godwin Igwebuike, Nate McCrary, La’Mical Perine and Abram Smith.

49ers to add RB Marlon Mack to practice squad

The #49ers are adding a veteran RB to their practice squad.

The 49ers are adding some running back depth after RB Elijah Mitchell’s knee injury, which is expected to sideline him for up to two months. ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Tuesday reported veteran RB Marlon Mack was set to join San Francisco’s practice squad.

Mack, 26, spent his first five NFL seasons with the Indianapolis Colts where he played in 47 games with 23 starts. His best season came in 2019 when he was the starter for 12 contests and rushed for 1,091 yards and eight touchdowns on 247 carries. Mack tore his Achilles in Week 1 of the following year and only played six games in 2021.

The Texans signed Mack in the offseason, but he was let go at final cuts. He was impressive when the 49ers and Texans played in the preseason finale. In that game he posted 55 rushing yards on 10 carries.

Mack was one of a slew of RBs who worked out for San Francisco. Per the transaction wire, the 49ers also worked out Devonta Freeman, former 49er. Tevin Coleman, Nate McCrary, Abram Smith for a second time, La’Mical Perine and Godwin Igwebuike

9 recently cut or waived players the Eagles should consider adding

Nine recently cut or waived players the Philadelphia Eagles should consider adding

The Eagles trimmed their roster down to 53 players on Tuesday, and as the team builds a practice squad, GM Howie Roseman could look to add more talent and personnel.

With Philadelphia focusing on the Lions, the team will likely have a few waiver wire targets that could land on the practice squad or replace a bubble player already on the roster.

With waiver claims starting at noon, here are nine recently cut players the Eagles should consider signing.
