SEC Takeaways: What we learned from around the league in Week 9

Top takeaways from around the SEC in Week 9

Week 9 of the 2023 college football season is now complete and each team now has just a handful of matchups remaining in the regular season.

Although [autotag]Nick Saban[/autotag] and the Alabama Crimson Tide had the week off, there was plenty of action around the SEC for the Tide fans to observe. Joining the Tide on a bye week were LSU, Arkansas, and Missouri.

Now that Week 9 in the SEC is complete, let’s take a look at a handful of the things we learned from the other programs around the conference before we shift out focus to the impactful matchup between Alabama and LSU in Week 10.

Georgia football reacts to Mark Stoops’ comments

Georgia football coach Kirby Smart and defensive lineman Zion Logue were asked to comment about Mark Stoops’ bold words.

Kentucky Wildcats football coach Mark Stoops made some bold comments about Georgia football using name, image and likeness to add a level of talent the Wildcats don’t have.

Georgia dominated Kentucky, 51-13, in a deflating Week 6 loss for the Kentucky Wildcats. Kentucky entered the game 5-0 and ranked 20th in the country. Georgia was coming off a few close games and looked like a team Kentucky had a chance to compete with entering the game. The gap between Georgia and Kentucky is as wide as it has ever been.

Stoops mentioned one way the Wildcats can begin to compete with the top teams in the SEC on the “UK Healthcare Mark Stoops Show.”

I just encourage them to donate more because that’s what those teams are doing. I can promise you Georgia, they bought some pretty good players.

You’re allowed to these days. We could use some help. That’s what they look like, you know what I mean, when you have 85 of them. I encourage anybody that’s disgruntled to pony up some more.

Georgia football coach Kirby Smart and defensive lineman Zion Logue were asked to comment about Stoops’ bold words.

‘That’s what those dudes are doing’: Stoops asks Kentucky fans to increase donations

On a Monday radio show, Mark Stoops voiced to Kentucky fans that the best way to keep up with Georgia is through increased donations.

It makes sense that a 51-13 beatdown doesn’t go away overnight. When Kentucky head coach Mark Stoops spoke on a radio show on Monday, it was clear the loss to Georgia still weighed him.

He said his team won’t make excuses or complain about the performance, and he added that Wildcat faithful have the right to complain about the loss. But he did offer a solution for his frustrated fans.

“I just encourage them to donate more, because that’s what those dudes are doing,” he said. “I can promise you Georgia, they bought some pretty good players. You’re allowed to these days. We could use some help.”

An article from the Lexington Herald-Leader said Stoops grew frustrated earlier in the show when a fan pointed out he’d only beaten two SEC teams who finished with a winning conference record.

“You’re climbing the ladder in the SEC,” Stoops said in response. “You think it’s easy? I sat here and watched a bunch of people try to do it. It’s not easy at a lot of different schools.”

Since 2018, Georgia has finished no lower than 4th in 247Sports’ Composite Recruiting Class rankings, with multiple No. 1 classes and another seemingly on the way in 2024. Kentucky has finished inside the top 25 in the nation just once, when they were 14th in 2022.

In an undoubtedly new era of college football, this is one of the first instances of a coach calling for a fanbase’s financial assistance in the recruiting game.

What Kentucky coach Mark Stoops said about Georgia

Kentucky coach Mark Stoops talks the challenge of playing at Georgia. He does not think UGA’s offense has changed much under Mike Bobo

The Kentucky Wildcats are the No. 20 team in the country and are undefeated. The Wildcats (5-0) defeated Florida, 33-14, in Week 5 thanks to a dominant performance from star running back Ray Davis.

Davis totaled 280 rushing yards and four touchdowns against Florida. Life does not get any easier for the Wildcats; they hit the road to face the Georgia Bulldogs in Week 6.

Kentucky Wildcats head coach Mark Stoops has not won a game against Georgia in his career. Georgia has won 13 straight games against Kentucky dating to 2009.

That does not mean Kentucky is an easy opponent. The Wildcats and Bulldogs have played some low-scoring, physical games over the years.

Kentucky’s Mark Stoops was the final head coach to speak on the main stage Wednesday.

Stoops was asked about Tennessee’s penalties handed down by the NCAA.

“You know, really, at this point, I have no reaction,” Stoops said. “That was two years ago and I’ve moved way beyond that, so no disrespect, but I just don’t have anything.

“I don’t know much about it, and worried about my own backyard, so it is what it is. I have no control over that.”

Kentucky will play host to Tennessee on Oct. 28 at Kroger Field. Tennessee defeated the Wildcats, 44-6, in 2022 at Neyland Stadium.

Report: Kentucky head coach Mark Stoops receives contract extension

A hot name amongst head coaching searches appears to be out of the running after receiving a hefty contract extension.

The sweepstakes for Auburn’s head coaching job is beginning to wind down, and it appears that one name has been removed from the running.

It was reported by multiple outlets on Sunday, including Brett McMurphy of Action Network HQ, that Kentucky has signed head coach [autotag]Mark Stoops[/autotag] to a contract extension. The extension is set to last through the 2030 season and has increased his salary from $6.35 million per season to $8.6 million per year. The deal was reportedly signed on Nov. 11, one day prior to Kentucky’s 24-21 loss to Vanderbilt.

According to Zach Geoghegan of Kentucky Sports Radio, Stoops now makes more than Kentucky head basketball coach John Calipari. Calipari currently makes $8.5 million per season to lead the Wildcats’ basketball program but is set to receive a boost to $9 million in 2025.

The extension is believed to be Kentucky’s response to Stoops being a name of interest in several head coaching searches. Outside of Auburn, Stoops was also tied to the opening at Nebraska.

In ten seasons at Kentucky, Stoops has led the Wildcats to a 65-58 record and is 4-2 in bowl games. Under Stoops’ watch, Kentucky has earned multiple wins over SEC East rivals Florida and Tennessee.
